Bleach Alternative?
Hello Moms,
I am trying to rid my household of all harsh chemical cleaners and have been using the Seventh Generation products for a while now. For the most part, they do the job just fine - but on that rare occasion when I would usually use bleach, they don't seem to cut it. I am having a problem with some mold growing in the corners of the bathtub and nothing I use seems to get rid of it. Does anyone know of a good alternative to bleach that would get rid of the mold without polluting the air in my home? Thanks!!

Vinegar is a great antibacterial. Being a former nurse myself we are use to the bacterialcides that hospital's use. But you want something that is safer for the home. Target's Method brand is just as good as Seventh Generation products and meant for the same purposes. With mold you need something that carries an anti fungal such as Tea Tree oil and keep using vinegar because it technically is a pro biotic. Trader Joe's has some great cleaners too that are meant for harder cleaning.

Shaklee Basic G- I clean my bathtub, showers, and toilet with it. It is the best bathroom cleaner I have ever used, including back when I used bleach. The bottle lasts for months. Order #00525.
Shaklee Scour off- I clean grout and ground in dirt from shower basin with this paste. It even very easily lifted permanent marker off of my kitchen table, after I had tried everything I could think of to clean it and nothing worked. It is natural, made from plant extracts. Order #00430.
I've heard Shaklee works a lot better than Seventh Generation. Good luck!

Hi T.,
You may need to start with fresh caulk to start, but I use Shaklee's Scour Off (I'm a distributor) and find it to work VERY well, without all the harsh chemicals/ odors. If you are intersted in more about the Shaklee products (they are earth friendly and concentrated, so a little goes a long way), you can visit my site at www.shaklee.net/tammybristol/getclean.

Hi T.,
Good for you for using non-toxic cleaners. I use Shaklee cleaners and we have had the same mold in the tub issues. Shaklee's "Basic G" (its a germicide and bleach alternative) works great and actually in studies, it has worked better than bleach - where bleach kills bacteria on contact, bacteria grows back within an hour and with the basic g, it keeps working. The Shaklee cleaners are very economical as well.
If you'd like more information, I would be happy to share it with you.

The vinegar, Hydrogen peroxide mix does work great--also add tea tree oil for extra power. We did finally put in an exhaust fan in our bathroom--we live in an very old house--which has helped enormously with the mold growth that was happening in our bathroom.
