Blankets Sized Toddlers

Hi Moms,

My two year old in still in his crib- and we're in NO hurry to get him out of it. (Neither is he, hopefully- now go knock on some wood for me!) With the cold winter coming up, we're starting to think about adding a pillow and blanket to his crib so he can stay warm and comfortable and continue to sleep well. Our doctor has already said definitely to adding these things.

What I'm wondering is, what blankets do you use for your toddlers, especially those still on crib mattresses? Those "baby" blankets are all about the size of a postage stamp, but then I feel like the twin blankets would be HUGE even if I did tuck it under the mattress. I'll be honest- I haven't even begun to look and see what's out there, but thought I'd begin here for some advice from those that have been there! :) I have a fleece blanket that's sort of the size I imagined, but would that be too warm? My boy has always been a pretty warm child...

Or am I WAY overthinking all this?!!! LOL!

Let me know what you've used!
A.

What can I do next?

I think you're over-thinking it a little bit--after all, most throw blankets (down, fleece, cotton) are slightly smaller than a twin size blanket and should work well. I found some nice down filled ones that weren't too heavy and not too hot.

Target has some great Disney fleece blankets - super soft, just the right size. Only about $15, I think.

Ditto BGBMOM. Target has some great fleece blankets that are not to big, they are the size of a throw, which is the in between for us (we are in the same boat, only our boys are in the "toddler bed" which is just a daybed version of their crib...oh, and they have been in this size bed for 6 + months and will turn 3 in 2 weeks :)!). All I wanted was a "Little Giraffe" satin/fleece blanket that was large enough to cover their entire bed (again, they are still crib size beds, they just do not have a fourth side on it) and it was IMPOSSIBLE to find!! To make life easier, just look for a "throw" size blanket/cover and you will find the correct size for a crib.
Much luck :)

I used blanket sleepers /footie pajamas. Also look for blankets that say 'toddler' on them. Target, Walmart and Toys R Us sell some nice ones.

I used baby blankets, 1-2 to get good coverage. I didn't use the square flanel recieving blankets but more robust knit or wool or fleece blankets. I would not use a twin becuae it is so thinck he could use it to stand on and climb (fall) out of the crib or get tangled up.

You could also go to the fabric store and buy a yard or two of some cute fleece and use pinking shears to cut it or serge the edges.

Yes, there are crib size blankets/quilts. But please don't put him in a blanket sleeper with a blanket on top, that may be too much. He will learn to move the cover if he is too warm and you can check on him to make sure he is not sweating.

I have a 3 year old. I know exactly what you are talking about...I had a hard time finding a toddler blanket too. For the longest I just kept using 2 baby blankets, one for upper body and one for lower....but recently I came across a nice little collection at Ikea. I think this is new for Ikea, I don't recall seeing this stuff before. But a few weeks ago, I bought a comforter (toddler size), a small pillow, 2 duvet and pillowcase sets to go along with the comforter and pillow, a mattress topper (a crib-sized soft topper to make that hard mattress of his more comfy to sleep in) and some bedding, and I also bought a bigger, "toddler" sized bathtub and stepstool (needed those too!). Love them all, and they were so inexpensive. They keep my little guy nice and warm, he does not get tangled up in the comforter like he used to with his little blankets, and the colors of the duvet covers are bright and cheery.

They sell Toddler bed sets at Walmart in the baby section. I also have a fleecy type blanket that is meant to be a throw for on a couch I think? But it is a good size width wise, its just a little long which actually works out because I can tuck it in at the bottom of the crib. I will say that my son is 3 and sleeping in a toddler bed and that he rarely sleeps with his covers, they always end up pushed to the side or on the floor. I still favor feety pjs and thermal under wear...hope you find something that works.

throw blankets that you use for the couch work great... a regular pillow will be fine, or again, a throw pillow for a couch.

I used the heavy fleece sleepers WITH a long-sleeved onesie underneath (and socks if absolutely necessary), and skipped the pillow and blanket. Carter's onsies run up to 24 months but can be worn beyond that size. (Somehow they fit both my kids until they were 3yrs old...and I had one big kid and one long kid.) You can find fleece sleepers up to 5T.

Note: the zip-up fleece sleepers become an issue when you are potty training. It's tough for the kiddos to get them on and off quickly!

My 3 year old is in a toddler bed (which uses the same sized sheets/blankets) as a crib. We sometimes layer the baby blankets but they are not long enough. We have started giving her a blanket we had on our couch - one side soft / other side fuzzy and she loves that! But she also sleeps naked (or just a shirt or pants) because she is too hot...but then she needs a blanket because she gets cold at night! I do not recommend buying an expensive toddler (crib) sized comforter because they won't be able to use it as long as a larger - like you said - fleece blanket ( or one you put on your couch). Good luck!

Hi A.,

My son who will be three in Nov is still in his crib and we are in no hurry to get him out. So as far as a blanket, my mother-in-law went to JoAnn's Fabric to look around. My son loves Curious George, so she found a "pannel" of geroge. It's one of those that you get and you can tie the outer edge all the way around. It's perfect for him. My son is tall for his age, so it works. Also, he does have a pillow, we added his pillow in his crib around the age of 2. It seems he sleeps better with his pillow. It is a regualr size pillow and it fits perfect in his crib. He does not play around with it.

At night and before I leave for work, I kiss the palm of both of his hands and he runs and puts them under his pillow for nap time or when he is sad and is thinking of me. It works... I did it one day when he didn't want me to leave for work and it's an on going thing.

I hope ou find something.

My daughter's crib converted into a daybed, so still the same size as a crib. We used a throw blanket. It was the perfect size. I puchased a down alternative throw, because I am cold all of the time in the winter and was always worried about the babies! lol Well, she was too hot for that, so then I bought a lighter weight throw and it worked out perfect. You will see the throws usually rolled up in the store. She loved it so much she would want to use it when we were on the couch watching a movie. I used a regular size bed pillow.

Hi there! I think you are over thinking this! :) My daughter had 2 blankets (her blankies that people made for her- the knit kind) since she was 10 months old. That was when she was able to pull them on and off. She's had a pillow since 18 months old or so. She is also a warm child so she puts the blankets on her when she wants. The knit blankets are the perfect size and weight. You could also use a fleece blanket. That would be just fine. Her first pillow was a toddler pillow. Entirely too small. She just received a pillot pet for her 2nd birthday and now uses it as her pillow for the night.

Good luck!

We've got the crib-sized duvet from IKEA too. Its worked perfectly for us. In fact, my 4 year old was even using it in his twin sized bed - he didn't want to give it up. I just made him do so, so that his 18 month sister can start getting used to it in the crib, now that the weather is changing. Good luck.

Go to IKEA. I have a 2 & 3 year old, and we have them transitioned into the toddler day bed that our cribs turned into. IKEA has blankets, sheets, down comforters, etc. all for crib size mattresses. Bonus, it's IKEA, so it's really reasonably priced.

I see several others have said about the toddler sized blankets on here at places like Wal-Mart, but if you are finding those hard to get your hands on, you might look at throw or lap blankets. They are sized for adults (kind of) but they are only big enough to cover an adult with their legs curled up like. I know we use those for my toddler who is also 2 and she LOVES them.

You're over thinking. He's 2, he's going to move around a lot anyway. Toddler bedding is the exact same size as the crib if you wanted to get a "set". If not, just buy a fleece throw. Or at Target, and other stores in the bedding area, there's a kid isle that has soft plush blankets!

Here is what we are doing with my 21 month old toddler. I have bought a yard of material from Joann's, or any other store that carries material. We get fleece since it is warm, fuzzy, and doesn't need to be sewn/hemmed. There is a wide variety of prices depending on what you look at. You can also get it in any pattern or print. My daughter's name is Abby, so I splurged and bought a larger one of Abby Cadabby and found someone to embroider her full name and birthday in the corner. She loves these and even continues to use smaller fuzzy blankets in the summer. I hope this helps.

Get some fleece from Joann's Fabrics or any other fabric store and make a blanket. They are super simple to make and you can make it the size you want. They are the ones that are cut and tied. Then when they leave the crib, they can take it with them to their new bed or you can simply get some new fleece and make them another one.

My toddler is in a bed, but its an extendible twin bed. Right now it looks like a square because I haven't extended it all the way. What I do is get a twin size sheet and fold it in half, then tuck it under. I make sure the sheet only goes as high as where her shoulders would be in the bed, that way the sheet can't go up over her head. Then I take a baby blanket and tuck it at the end as well. The baby blanket maybe only covers to her waist, but hey...it helps.
I also have used a "lap blanket." It's a fleece blanket I got to fold up and put on our couch. I got them at walmart for like 10 bucks. It seems to work pretty well. I even got a synthetic fleece one. Although it doesn't match her bedding...who cares, she's warm! LOL. Good Luck.

I know I'm late, but just went through this myself. I got one of those toddler bed sets, and my son was soooo excited. Then bedtime came.....mommy, cover me......mommy, cover me. On and on until we took it way, and he was even more upset. We tried again, with the same results. When we offered to try again the next night, he said no, the blanket made him sad. I had a twin quilt that my mom made me, and a memory of my sister's advice came back, and I put it sideways and tucked it in really well. This way it doesn't untuck and come off him. He has still scooted himself out of it, but it avoids the smaller blanket that doesn't stay put.
