Has anyone started letting their babies sleep with a blankie at night? I am still so worried about my 8 mo putting it over her head and suffocating, but at the same time I want her to be nice and warm at night. She now wears 2 layers of pj's because she doesn't use a blanket. When did you start using a blankie for your baby?

Thanks!
A.

So What Happened?

Hello all!

Thank you EVERYONE for the wonderful advice!! It is great to hear what you did and how things went. I did try to put a blankie on her when she was taking a nap the other day. She woke up for a second and saw it, pulled it onto her face, and was so excited about it that she was up for the rest of the day! She LOVES pulling blankies on her face and it scares me, so I am going to go without until she's older. She can use the snuglis and thick jammies until then - and it is warm enough now (well, not today) that she can sleep in a onesie on occasion! She loved napping the day it was 80 degrees outside! It's not that she is waking up or anything - just I wasn't sure if she should have a blankie. I'd love for her to have one be her lovie.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!
Hugs,
A.

I found these great blanket bags. They are like overalls that have no legs. Anyway, it gives you a blanket that they can't put over there heads. You can find them online at onestepbeyond (I think-I had a catalog but I don't know what I did with it)
On the bright side, it should be getting warmer so you won't need a blanket.

They make things called "Sleepsacks" and they are a zipped up blanket without sleeves that keep them very warm. They go right over their jammies. I used on with my son until he was about 9 months old then I switched to a lightweight afghan with holes in it so I knew if it did get over his face he would have the holes to breathe. He never had a problem with it.

I started at 1 year. But he wants nothing to do with a blanket. He actually stands up and tosses it out of the crib if I try to put one in. Ha! Maybe use a crocheted blanket with little holes in it if your worried.

Honey I want to tell you this. I wouldnt be afraid to put her to bed with a blanket. Ihave been putting kids to bed with blankets from the day that they come home form the hospital. and havent had a problem. as long as u dont use a lot of them or any that r relly thick they will be fine for starters I would start her off with a knit afagan. If you need one email me and let me know I can get you one i have plenty. that is got small holes that if she does put it over her head she will still be able to breath. Lots of children cover their heads when they sleep and I still dont know how people say they can sufforcate cuz i have wrapped the blanket around my heads and I can still breath and they can be heavy blankets. Any questions please feel free to email me

We used a blanket with our son since the day he was born. He has never put it over his face. If you are worried about SIDS, check out wrapping your daughter's matress to keep her safe.

Hi A.
I personally always used a blanket on my daughter (she's now 4). When she was an infant I would tuck the blanket under the foot of the mattress or used small blankets so she wouldn't have an overabundance of blanket (not enough to get tangled in). Hope this was helpful.

I am a new mom to a 6-month old little girl....
I was so paranoid about letting her sleep with a blanket for the very same reason you are hesitant to do so!

I finally just put one on her one night and when I went in to check on her...she had kicked it off. It has been the same every night since...she ends up kicking the blanket to the bottom of the crib!! I started using a blanket at about 3-4 months...but really, it is whatever YOU are comfortable doing. I would put one on Samantha perhaps during her nap time and check in on her. Once you are more comfortable with the idea of using a blanket, then you can try it at night.

Hope this helps....good luck!!

A.,
I know "they" say not to use a blanket, but I've been using a blanket all along (even with 2 layers of PJ's because our house gets so cold at night!) and it hasn't been a problem. My daughter is 8.5 mo old and she will pull it over her head, but obviously she hasn't suffocated yet. The risk of SIDS goes down significantly after 6 months, and I think a blanket is fine at this point. My Ped even suggested putting the bumpers on the crib now that she moves around at night.
Hope that helps!

Hello,
My 2 kids always used blankets from the time they were born. My daughter was a blankie baby. From the time she was 6 or 7 months old she had a small fleece blanket that I covered her with. I would cover her from under her arms to her feet. When I would go check on her it was always pulled up over her face. When I snuggled with her to put her to sleep she would burry her face in me or cry till I put a recieving blanket over her face(I would tent it). I always checked on her 4 or 5 times a night or when ever the urge hit me to check on her. I always pulled it down but she always pulled it back. She carried that blanket every where till she was about 4 but she still uses it on her stuffed animals, dolls, and our cats. To this day (she is 8) she likes it dark when she sleeps. I say use a blanket but be aware and check on her and follow your instincts. My son never did anything like that. he used a blanket the appropriate way. It also wasn't his comfort thing. He also needs a night light. Kids are wonderful. Good luck and Best wishes.

I designed a sleep sack which is adjustable to fit from infancy into the toddler years called a Snuggle Down. It is filled with cozy white goose down, which I think is comfortable year-round. And if your little one does not like having their legs confined, this product is equipped with a two way zipper extending down the side and across the bottom, so it can be unzipped from the bottom...little legs are free to kick, but the blanket stays securely in place. My website is www.snuggledownbaby.com. The design is currently only available with goose down fill, but I will be offering unfilled versions soon. Hope this helps!

I didn't really start using a blanket until my daughter was 1 year old. I did use the blanket sleepers that zip in the front and look like a bag on the bottom. They are great and you don't have to worry about them pulling it up over there heads. I used it upto a year they are wonderful.

Hi A.,
When my son was first born I put him in Halo sleep sacks. They are a wearable blanket and come in fleece and cotton. You can get them at Babies R Us. At around 8 months, my son hated them because they are confining. So, I used a light knit blanket that someone made for him. It had holes in it from being knit, so I figured if he got caught up in it, he would be OK. Around 10 months I switched to a real blanket and we have had no issues. Good luck!

My son is also 8 months and I have been putting a blanket on him for about 2 months. But most of the time he kicks it off. I don't think he cares if he has a blanket or not. It never has been an issue with suffocation once he was able to turn on to his stomach by himself.

My son is just a little older than your daughter and he has been using a blankie for months. I wouldn't worry too much about it he actually tends to kick it off of him.

Hope this helps,

hi A.,
i would use a blanket because at this point she should be rolling over and she can pull thungs off her face or should be able too by now. i started using a blanket with my son at4 months old and tucked in under his arms when he slept (he was still on abck then) i also use a blanket with holes so it is breathable. i woulsn't worry so much my son usually loses his blanket by middle og night any way. hope this helps.

I covered my son who is now 1 the whole time. I just use a thin blanket a breathable one. I never put the blanket above his waste though. You might find that he'll just kick it off. My son once he's about to fall asleep he kicks them off.

Hi. I have an 8-month-old son and he has been sleeping with a blanket since he came home. I had a hard time using one because of the same reasons that you have but my husband couldn't stand the thought of our son sleeping without one. We just tuck the blanket at the bottom of his crib and the sides so he can't pull it up over him. He does sometimes get it out but he is old enough now where you can move the blanket if it covers his head. I wouldn't worry about using one. I bet your baby will like it.

Hi A.!

Unless you house is very cold, you may be overheating Samantha. Usually the footsie pajamas are plenty-no blankets needed yet.

I think they say that if you keep it around 68 degrees or so, that the baby should be fine.

Congrats!

My daughter is almost 17 mths and I still get nervous about putting a blanket in with her. We put two layers of pjs on too. If it makes you nervous, don't do it. She's fine with the layers of pjs. It's funny, because you think of how you'd feel without a blanket on you. Even if it's hot in the house I still need a sheet drapped across some of me. So that's why we think they would like it too. They don't know any different. They were too little to remember being swaddled and then as they got older we just put pjs on them. I'd wait. I think they sell those blanket sleepers for older babies. I haven't seen them in stores but check online, those are warm.

I used Snugli's on my son before he was one. They sell them at Babies R Us. The are usually fleece and have a sleeveless are and zip up over the babies body. They make them in all different size. It is what AAP recommends instead of a blanket to help prevent SIDS.

Hi A., we started covering Bella with light and small blankets after about 6 months I think- before that she wore a sleeper because it covered her body but she couldn't get tangled. They come in thick material and thin for the warmer months.
