Definitely use a blanket! My daughter has been using one since about 7 months old. It is now her lovey and she cannot sleep without it. It's too cute! Personally, I think the sleep sacks are for the first six months or so. They cannot move around in them and seem to be a restriction to me! Especially when they're mobile. :) My daughter positions her blankie how ever she wants. And puts it on herself when she is cold (she is 11 1/2 months). By the way, hers is a crocheted blanket. When it gets cooler we will also add a warmer blanket and then she'll have two.

Yes no problem, since now they can roll themselves over by themselves. I would only use one blanket and not a comforter. I have used different kinds. Just not too big of ones. Those sleep sacks are too tough now that they can move around so much.

Greetings!! typically a 13 month old is old enough to use a light weight polar fleece (child size) blanket. I would not do anything bigger than the blankets that they typically sell for an infant/toddler. If you are still concerned, do "the blanket test;" while your child is awake (during play time) take the blanket you are planning to use at bed time and put over your child's head. If she can easily pull it off then the blanket should be safe for night time use. Words of warning however: Just cover her head once. Do not repeat the "test" so your child thinks it is a game. You don't want her to think it is fun to cover her head and do it at night time when she is alone in her crib. My daughter who is now 2 1/2 has been using a blanket at bedtime since she was about 10 months old without a problem.

Yes, you can have your 13 mo old use a blanket. My little one was using a blanket at that age. I always made sure that it was made of 100% cotton--not that polyester fleece stuff. You can also still buy 100% cotton footie pj's for toddlers, too. We put a onesie underneath and socks. I would just stick to natural fabrics like cotton and wool. When my little girl started to get too long for her cotton baby quilt I went to Ikea and got her a cotton quilt. You can also get blankets that are cotton cover and poly fill--but be careful bc some are cotton/poly blend on the outside cover. They also have lovely cotton duvets for the blankets. Hope that helps.

My son started using a blanket at about 10 months old, but he never keeps it on, even now that he is 2. So, I use footed sleepers (lightweight in spring fall/fleece in winter) and I also have a sleep sack. The larger sleepsacks are nice because they have holes for their feet so if they want to get out of bed and walk they can.

I'd stick with a sleepsack, because then you don't have to worry about her kicking off the blanket and being cold...

I wouldn't give my 13 month old a typical blanket. BUT, my mom crochets and she has made my kids a loosely knitted blanket. I feel more comfortable with that b/c even if it gets wrapped around their head it's pretty "holey" blanket and he'll still be able to breathe. I have never found sleep sacks big enough for a 13 month old. Also, use feetie pj's and put a onesie under it. In the very cold monnths, use long sleve onesies (if you can find them :) Not to worry, your daughter will be just fine. I think babies have all that baby fat to keep them warm too :)

I personally wasn't comfortable with my 13 year old and a blanket, so I either did a sleepsack OR I doubled up her pajamas - I put a lightweight long sleeve shirt and pant pajamas under the fleece footed pajamas. The footed ones with a onsie wasn't warm enough for her on her legs and arms so we just layered. I even put socks under the footed pajamas if needed. She slept much better when warm!

I think it's ok to give her a blanket at 13 months. A fleece one is nice & warm & easily washable if she pees, spits up, etc.

Hi M. By all means put a blanket over her if she's cold. It doesn't have to be a heavy one and make sure she's sleeping in warm pjs.

I've always used blankets since the time both my kids were born. In the winter the sleepsacks just aren't enough in my house. But you have to do what you feel comfortable with. I didn't know that they made the sleepsacks that big though. Good to know.

Hi M.,

The risk of SIDS decreases significantly after age 6 mos., so from a safety standpoint she should be okay. However, I know my daughter moves around a lot at night, so I put her in a sleepsack at night (and use a blanket for naps when it's not as cold and not as long a time for her to sleep). We keep our house pretty cold, so I would worry that my daughter might not keep her blanket on and would be cold.

Best,
R.

You can always overdress her of course, but my 11 month old has been sleeping with blankets (light ones, not like a down comforter or anything) for months now. I put them just above his butt. He's been fine.

I did with my son start with a receiving blanket I just would not put the blanket higher than her chest and have her arms on top.

I don't think there's a danger in using blanket at this age. But my daughter is turning 2 next week and I still use a sleep sac for 2 main reasons. 1. I know she is covered all night...she moves around too much to keep a blanket on her. 2. It keeps her in a routine that she's had since she was a tiny baby. I didn't use a sleep sac for my 2 older boys but since using it with my daughter, I wish I had. It's so easy and I don't have to have a lot of extra blankets.

I know some people are on the fence about this one (and that's okay) but at 13 months the risk of SIDS has been significantly reduced. If your child is capable of lifting her head while on her belly, can roll over both ways, and at 13 months is probably able to sit on her own and pull up to a standing position and sit back down, then there really is no worry and blankets would be fine. If you're nervous about it though, sleep sacks won't hurt. You've got two good choices, so looks like a winning situation either way :)

My daughter has been sleeping with two fleece blankets for many, many months. She also sleeps in a sleepsack. The blankies are her transition objects.

I wouldn't worry about it. I thought the rule was as long as they can lift their head and roll over, blankets are safe.

At this age I gave my twins a receiving blanket . They are light and small so they can easily use them. When I got more comfortable I gave them a heavier blanket. Until they were three I didn't give them anything "with eyes" , only the lovies with sewn eyes no buttons or plastic eyes.

I used long sleeved, footie sleepers (moderate weight in Fall and fleece in Winter) with a onesie underneath (either short sleeves or long sleeves, depending upon the temperature of the house) until my kids were 2 yrs old. I didn't think my kids could learn how to "control" the blanket until they were a bit older (being able to pull up the blanket up if they were cold...or kick it off if they were too warm.) My son cries when he gets cold, and the last thing I wanted was to have to get up in the middle of the night, multiple times, because he "lost" the blanket and needed me to put it back on him. So, I stuck with the sleepers & onesies combos until they turned 2yrs old.

At 13 months any type for baby blanket is definitly safe. My son is 14 months old and has been sleeping with a blanket and pillow since he was 11 months old.
