Biting Bugs in Sandbox...

Hi,

My son played in our sandbox for the first time in quite a while over the weekend. Later that evening he had what appeared to be more than a dozen bug bites from his mid calf down to his ankles. Starting on the edge of his shorts. Poor guy was miserable last night. Antihistamines are helping, but does anyone know how do I get rid of the bugs? Do I need to replace the sand?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Dear K.:

Just put drops of essential oils of Lemongrass, Citronella, Peppermint, T-tree and Eucalyptus citriodora.

Changing the sand will just give them a new home.

Yes and not necessarily is it bugs in genersl ants can bite and they love sand. But to get rid of them must replace.

Ick! Sand fleas? Did the sand get wet? There might be mosquitoes in it. Replace with dry sand and keep the sandbox covered when he's not using it.

Sounds like sand fleas.

Don't know how to get rid of them. But better than antihistamines, get hold of Arbonne brand SeaSource. Smear that stuff on overnight and it takes care of bites wonderfully.

my guess is fleas. Its almost the end of the season for the sandbox. If its a small one I would toss the sand and clean the sandbox so its ready for new sand next spring. If its a large one treat it for fleas and leave it off limits for the fall/winter. There are products out there that are safe for pets and kids but I still wouldn't want my child playing in it right after being treated.

To be safe, I would replace the sand.......and make sure you keep it covered with a good lid or covering from now on......it could be anything in there......so spraying might or might not help......

Good Luck....
