Biting and Self Inflicted Pain

Help me please! My daughter is 2 1/2 and lately has this horrible habit of biting her nails, obviously many children have this oral fixation so I just tried to redirect when she had her fingers in her mouth, then it ended up that she didn't have any fingernails left to bite so she went to toenails, then when there was none of them left she began biting them in the quicks and making them bleed and now has literally bit off a fingernail and has gone so far as to take her fingers and rip off a toe nail. She is in extreme pain and I don't know what to do. So far this is what I have done:
Redirected, got camphophenique to take away sting and tastes horrible (as instructed by my local pharmacy), Got a product called "thumb" to help with biting again a horrible taste and she licks it off, I have been giving her Tylenol and Motrin because of her pain and I have taken her to the doctor, I am beyond myself with what to do and am looking for whatever advice anyone can throw my way. Another little tid bit of information, she has been drooling a lot lately so I thought a tooth was coming in, although I see none, I have numbed her mouth with orajel and given her a teething ring and a mesh pacifier with ice in it, she has chewed a hole in the couch and chews on everything she can get her hands on. Help!

What can I do next?

I am sorry for your pain. I have never heard of this to that point. My granddaughter used to bite her nails but she stopped. We stayed on her constantly and she stopped. I will say a prayer for you and your daughter.

I agree with other posts, if your pediatrician isn't able to help I would consult another doctor. Good luck with both of your little ones!

I have never been a fan of orajel, I was told ny a pediatrician that orajel can actually toughen the gums and make it harder for the teeth to come through and that a better option is to rub some ( liquid of course) Ibuprofen on the gums as this helps reduce swelling. I wish I had better advice for the biting of the fingernails/toenails...the best I can tell you is offer plenty of things that are ok to chew on? She may just have the urge to bite and chew and you could offer licorice or beef jerkey ( under supervision of course) my son is a thumb sucker and he bites when he is angry/ we have some special needs concerns, he is recieving therapy...but he has a special teether that is made for Autistic children called a chewy tube...I wish I had the website addy for you but I am sure you could find it if you google it ( I will look it up and send you a personal email if I can find it )
I feel so bad for her! I hope you find a solution.

I don't have any experience with this, but it doesn't sound typical. I would see another doctor, and maybe a pediatric dentist? Let us know what happens. Good luck!

I agree with previous posters, another doctor might be able to help. I think the basis is behavioral therapy, where you redirect. I know you are already doing that, so I don't know what else they might suggest. I'm so sorry for you both; it must be really hard.

Good Morning S., I would call another PED.and see if you can get to the bottom of this one. I would think there is something more going on with your little angel then teething or even an OCD. A precious child should not be hurting themselves in this way. I put HOT sauce on Zane's thumbs to stop him from sucking is thumb. His teeth were wearing down in the middle and pulling them forward.
Even a child psychologist may be able to help you even more.

I would definitely look for other Dr.'s to help S.. Can't let it continue.

Let us know how you go about this situation Hon.
God Bless you

The chewing on everything is worrisome. I suggest you do some research into a disorder called "PICA". It can be potentially dangerous and can potentially be quite harmful. Here is a website with a little info, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_(disorder)

I would deffinetely get a second opinion from another peditrician, or even take her to Childrens Mercy. God Bless, i'll keep you in my prayers
