Take her on an outing for her birthday. Maybe even one that contains an activity giving to others. Of course, any outing that will get her excited.

If you want to get her started on computers, webkinz is a perfect interactive site that teaches children through a virtual portal how to live life.

Try a game called "boochie" by gamewright. I found mine at Barnes&Noble. Around $25.00 but sooo worth it. Children are active, and the game changes enough to keep intrest. My 5 and 3 year olds both love it.

If she likes crafts and art, buy her art supplies or a kit. YOu can never have too much paint, construction paper, cook markers etc.

I have a niece that will be 5 soon and she is into everything with princesses and Ballerina’s.She is also into dress up clothes.I bought her a teara and a wand that has on off switch , it light up, it was in the party favor section at Walmart and then I went on line and bought her a few story books.She can't read yet but My sister reads to the girls every day and they love new books.I also went to Joann fabrics and bought stuff to sew her a new dress up costume in purple and pink her favorite colors.A ballet type costume and I also got her a pair of angel wings you can attach like for a fairy princess outfit. Almost done sewing it all together.

If it's not your child, my 5 year old son got a gift card for his birthday in December and LOVED it! He wasn't sure what it was at first, but i said "WOW, you get to take that to the store and buy whatever you want!" I thought it was a great idea, and my sister and I have started giving each other's kids either gift cards or money over the last year because we noticed how cool the kids all thought it was. Otherwise, you get them just another toy and who knows if they'll play with it or not. Atleast if they're picking it out themselves, you know they like it!

There is a company (I can't remember the name, but you can probably find them through google) that sells CDs of songs personalized with kids' names-- even the uncommon ones. They will do any name you request. My sons (4 and 7) got these for Christmas and they were a big hit and very unique! Good luck...

You didn't mention what you are willing to spend which will limit the ideas. I had a limit on what my children could spend on gifts for their friends.
If she is into Dora or into Barbie the ideas are limitless! Clothing with the character on them, or jewelery and accessories always work.
I used to crochet doll clothes so I had a line of 5 Barbie doll wedding dresses I used to sell to people that were totally unique. I made some Cabbage Patch clothes when those were the rage as well and made bed dolls in really layered dresses.
I would try a charm bracelet I have seen the Barbie ones and Hannah Montana ones and the kids are really into them right now.

Have you thought about a savings bond?

I know it's not really something for her right now, but her parents would probably appreciate it later.

Subscription to a kids' magazine. There are dozens if not hundreds of them these days. There's a decent list (but not complete by any means) at magazine.com if you don't know which one to get.

Art supplies... kids can never have too much paint, crayons, markers, paper, construction paper, glue, etc because they go through it so darn fast. Make up an art basket.

Gift certificate for Build-A-Bear is a great idea but make sure it's enough for at least the basics. An animal (they have more than bears!) and 1 outfit is easily $25-$30.

If you want to spend more, a year membership to the zoo or children's museum.

Most of the time little ones who have everything...don't have one very important thing...someone's time and attention. Why not give her a coupon to a tea party. You can both dress up and spend on hour in make-believe. Or give her a home spa day, with manicure and pedicure. She will love just spending time with you. And either or similar ideas will make your time together very special. So give the best gift of all...yourself.

Gift certificate for BUILD A BEAR, LIBBY LOU, movie tickets......there are some cool backpacks that kids can color themselves (I think those are cool) BOOKS!!!......gift certificate to a pottery/arts & crafts shop - don't know where you live but we have one here & kids love it......games.....kids cookbook w/ neat kids apron...puzzles maybe even one she can frame for her room, tickets to a kids production (several here in the Indy area).....hopefully this will help.

For her 6th birthday my daughter recently received shampoo and body wash from Bath and Body works. I thought that was a really unique and nice idea. She absolutely loved it (and so did her younger sister).

She also received some board games. Littlest Pet Shop was one of her favorites.

If this little girl is fond of animals, you could adopt an animal through the Defenders of Wildlife web site. They have adoptions as low as $25 that include a little plush toy of the animal you have saved on her behalf and a certificate that states that she has provided the funding to save the animal. I gave my grandson (who just turned 6) a Sea Turtle for Christmas, and he loved it. For his birthday last week, I let him select which animal we would save next. He loves the idea of saving these animals. It's a great gift because it raises their awareness of conservation while giving them something to display on the wall and a cute little plush toy to boot!

Take her to build a bear where she can build her own bear and make is special

One of the things i love to do is spend time with my nieces. Their Mother is very busy. They latest craze that has been very popular for all 4 of my nieces for the last 3 years has been Build A Bear. My husband and I get them a gift card to Build A Bear. We take them to build the bear then out to lunch afterwards. Since the gift card as a set amount we have been able to use it as a teaching moment as well. They have learned that the more expensive the animal they pick out the less they can get in clothes, etc. We don't cover the difference. There have been some really tough decisions made as to i really want "panties" but I want "shoes" too. They have to decide. It has been a great learning tool and we get to spend quality one on one time with our nieces.
Our nephew who turned 7 in October requested the Build A Bear experience for his birthday :)
