My baby boy is turning one in November and I am not sure where to purchase a cake from. Does anyone have any suggestions on bakeries, cake makers, etc other than Costco? I live in Royal Oak so I am centrally located to a lot of different cities. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks!

Sam's Club & COSTCO both have EXCELLENT birthday cakes. If you know someone who's a member of either, they are awesome and inexpensive.

If you are interested in an ice cream cake you should consider Coldstone Creamery. They have different themed birthday cakes available, or you can customize your own. You can choose the type of cake, flavor of ice cream, and decoration/theme. I had my daughter's first birthday cake done there and it turned out good. Just make sure you let the cake thaw enough before serving it or it will be too hard and the cake will be dry. I would recommend letting it sit out about 45 minutes before serving. Good luck.

Jill,

This is not a direct response-- but consider making a separate cake for your son. For my son's first b-day I made him a large cupcake and used coolwhip for frosting b/c I didn't want him to get all the sugar. I also made cupcakes (smaller ones) for the kids attending. And believe me, parents were very appreciative. For his 2nd b-day I bought a cake pan from the party store and made an Elmo cake. It took forever and my hand about fell off-- but he loved it.

There is a great bakery in Rochester called Home Bakery. I got my wedding cake there and my Aunt gets cakes there all the time. They are good and creative and expensive!

Have fun!

I did Baskin Robbins ice cream cakes for my sons first birthday. We had a seperate cake for him. It was adorable videotaping him going nuts with a small little cake all his own. Granted he only ate a small portion and there was a huge mess, but I definately recommend getting him his own cake or cup cake.

Jill - I am a big fan of Holiday Market (at the end of Main Street, just North of 10 mile) cakes. They are also a little bit pricey, but they really have some talented people in their bakery, and we have always been delighted with their cakes. They also run a high-end catering business next door, so they are not just your typical supermarket bakery.

Hi,
The Produce Palace International, check them out at http://www.ppifresh.com/ - the cakes are more than what you would pay at Costco, however, they are so good. They are not too sweet with fruit, they're very light in taste & texture. I get my cakes only from Produce Palace International and I have not met a person yet that would not like them - people alwasy ask me about the place I got the cake from.
Thanks!

I too suggest cupcakes. I have 3 kids ages 5, 2, and 9 mos. I have been doing cupcakes now for the past 2 birthdays for my oldest daughter and and for both of my middle daughters birthdays. They go over really well and then you're not left over with half a sheet cake. I suggested it to my friend for her daughter's birthday and she loved the idea. She bought a cupcake tree stand so it looked like a tiered cake but it was cupcakes. Plus they a sooo easy to make and decorate. For my daughter's 1st birthday I frosted them using yellow then I bought sugar eyes and those chocolate disks you can buy from cake and candy supply stores. I bought them in orange and stuck them into the cupcake so they looked like a duck bill. They were so cute!! This year I frosted them white and dipped them in red edible glitter and stuck an elmo face made of sugar on them. Again super cute and the kids LOVED them as well as the adults. From now on I am pnly doing the cupcake thing (o:

I bought a cake last year from VG's in Pontiac for my Daughters 3rd bithday. She is really in to the Carebears and they were able to make a cake with that theme for a VERY resonable price. Plus tha cake tasted good which is always a bonus!
