Birth Weight of Baby #2 - Philadelphia,PA
I know there is huge variation, but I'm just curious so I thought I'd take a poll. How big was your second baby compared to your first? Bigger or smaller and by how much? Oh, and what was the sex of each child?
The reason this came up is because my MIL got a cute little outfit for the girl we are expecting in April, but she got the newborn size, which my son outgrew in like 3 days because it only goes up to 8 lbs. I was just wondering if I should exchange it for size 3 months or if I'll regret not having something that fits her the day she's born. My son was 7 lbs, 8 oz at birth, so I'm wondering what I can expect for my daughter. (I know I'll have to wait until she's born to know for sure!) Some people have told me the second is always bigger than the first and others have said girls are usually smaller than boys. So does it average out if you have a boy and then a girl?
TIA!
So What Happened?™
MamaMay-That is something I'm worried about. My mom had 2 girls, I was first at 7 lbs, 2 oz and my sister was born second and weighed 8 lbs, 13 oz! I hope that trend doesn't hold for me, but we'll just have to wait and see.

My first was 3 weeks early and she was 7lbs 7 oz, she did not fit in any of the 0 to 3 mos clothing. I so wished I had newborn or preemie for her. Luckily she was born in June so she mostly went with just a diaper on and wrapped in a blanket. She looked awful coming home from the hospital in the onesie that was huge on her. My son was two weeks late and was 10 lbs. I had newborn for him, which he only wore home from the hospital, and never again. Even though it was snug on him it worked and he didn't look as bad as my daughter did. Now in my family the second child has always been smaller. And I wonder if my daughter had been full term how big she would have been.

I think it's fine to keep the clothes. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. It has to do with weight and length as to how well the clothes fit. My son was 6 lbs 14 ounces but only 18 1/2 inches. He fit newborn for a month. I am glad I had some because the 0-3 where gigantic at first.

I gained 25 lbs with each and started out at healthy body weight for my height and frame. Increased pregnancy weight gain often increases infant birth weight. Be mindful of the scale and your diet if you want to reduce the risk of a large baby.

Well, I recommend that you trade it for a 3 month outfit, and use your first child's clothes, even if it's a different sex. That way, you won't have to worry about not having anything for her to wear. Really and truly, does it matter if your baby is wearing the wrong color at home in the bassinet?
My first was born at 37 weeks after being bed-bound due to pre-term labor since 24 weeks. My second was born the day he was due and weighed almost a pound more. (I didn't have to go to bed with him.) Both were boys.

My 3rd. (also a boy) was 7lbs., 8oz. and my 4th (girl) was 6 lbs.,13oz.
My advice is to keep the outfit- you just never know :)
Congratulations!!

My 31/2yo son was a week late (I was induced) and he was 7lb 15oz 21.5" and my 11 mo. old daughter was almost the same, 7lb 14oz 21". I had 2 newborn outfits and a 3mo. size sleeper that was on the smaller size. I liked having the tiny size clothes (I just kept washing them overand over cuz everything else was so big), when I put my kids in the 3 mo. clothes, their legs scrunched up in the pajamas and got stuck.

#1 was a girl, 7.11 and supposedly 3 weeks early.
#2 is a boy, 10.8 and born the day after the estimated due date.
I know usually each additional baby will be a bit more than the last and generally girls are about 4-12 ounces less than the average newborn boy... just to be safe tho, I'd get the 3 month size.

From what I understand this is more something you should ask your mom.
My mom had 3 children and we each were about 1 pound less that the previous (I was 10 pounds... So no one was under weight), I have 3 children and each of my kids have been smaller by about a pound as well. From what I understand, if your mother had bigger babies each time, you will, if your mother had kids all about the same weight, you will and if the babies each got smaller for her, they will for you too. At least all my girlfriends had it work that way.

My firstborn, a boy, was 10 days past due date. He weighed 8 lb 12oz.
My second, a girl, was 7 days early (they actually had the exact same due date three years apart, lol)... so, with about 17-18 days difference in their gestational time, she weighed 7 lb 6 oz... so one pound, six ounces Less than my firstborn.
I wonder what she might have weighed had she lasted as long in utero as her older brother did....?
I would keep the cute little outfit your MIL got for her. Girls are often smaller, and really, until she is born, you have no idea if she will be on time or early or what. Subsequent babies, I think, are also less likely to go past their "due date".... soooo.... And Dr's are notorious for being wrong about guesstimating birth weight. I just came from the hospital today, visiting a friend and her newborn... she was due this past Saturday, and was born yesterday (Thursday evening). She was expected to be over 8 lbs by her due date. She was late, and weighed 7 lbs 6 oz. Her 0-3 month clothes are pretty huge on her. She could use some newborn stuff for the next 2 weeks at least...

My daughter was 7lbs 11oz and born at 39 weeks.
My son was 9lbs 5oz and also born at 39 weeks, although the pediatrician on duty said she was sure he was at least 40-41 weeks. Plus, I was taking steroids with him too b/c I had the WORST pregnancy rash and my doctor said that could have contributed to his size, although he's now 2 and is still off the charts for height and weight, so maybe not!
And for the record, I'd probably exchange the newborn outfit. I mean they are cute and somewhat useful b/c they are so tiny, but really...it's better to have it a little big and use it for a month or more than to use it for a few weeks, if that! Although, since it's a gift, maybe it'll be just fine to keep it small, use it a few times and move on!

My opinion is that if your children are born full term and they are not twins, their weight increases by a little, as a boy or a girl. I think there is slight chance a girl will be less, but in my experience, it isn't every time.
I have two boys and the first was 8 pounds 6 oz, the second 8 pounds 13 oz. First one was born at 41 weeks, 2nd one at 39 weeks.
In my family it was boy, girl, boy girl. All of us were born near our due dates. I was the second born. My older brother was 5 pounds 5 oz, I was 7 pounds 7 oz, my younger brother 7 pounds something and my younger sister was 8 pounds something.
My older brother had 3 boys and then a girl fourth. His kids' weights started over 8 pounds and went up and his daughters was lighter than the 3rd born at 9 pounds, 3 oz. All 4 were almost 2 weeks past due.
My friends kids were also 3 boys and then a girl last. All born near due date. Her first and 4th were the heaviest at almost 10 lbs. Her middle boys were twins and over 7 pounds each.

So my mom told me to just get a few pj's in newborn size and get everything else in size 3 mon. or 3-6 months because "they won't get much use out of it."
Well, I didn't have time to take her advice since I wound up delivering almost 10 weeks early! If I would have bought a lot in those sizes, my babies would have had to wait a LONG time (and would have been the wrong seasonal clothing) since they wore preemie size for quite awhile.

First, a boy one week later, 7lbs 9 0z
2nd, girl 1 week early 6lbs 15oz
Now the doctors estimated that my son would be almost 9lbs and with my daughter they thought only 5lbs due to my low amniotic fluid and I only gained 15lbs with her. I lost weight during most of my pregnancy and started putting back on in the last month and a half.
My mom and even my doctor said that your birth weight is usually a good indicator as to what the birth weight of your children would be.
Most of my friends and family this holds true. One exception is a friend of mine who only weighed 3lbs at birth had 2 9lb children and the one was taken 2 weeks early due to his estimated size.
I would keep the outfit and if anything bring her home in it!
