I was wondering if anyone else has been put on the mirena birth control. I have a few questions like how my periods are going to be. i have hade it in place for about 7 weeks now and recently think i have a urinary tract infection and i'm not sure if that came from that or something else. Any help would be appreciated

I have had mine in for almost the full 5 years and i love it. I never had any problems with it(maybe some cramping early on). I have lighter periods then i use to, but i was not one of the lucky ones to stop getting it all together. I also use to get really bad menstrual cramps(sometimes to the point of feeling sick), and those are much less now too. Hope that helps

I've had mine for a few months now. My periods have been extremely light - only a day or two of spotting!!! I think your UTI is most likely unrelated.

Hi K.--I have the mirena and have had no problems. It was put in place about 9 months ago after the birth of my second child. The only challenge I have with it is tracking my periods--I still haven't had a 'real' one (maybe never will?) but do get PMS about once a month, a little cramping, and then a very light, very quick period type thing...All in all, it sure does make life easier and I guess the periods will just be something to get used to...Good luck!

I would love to see the responses to your question too. My doctor suggested it, but I don't know anyone that's ever used it.

Hi K.,
I've had the mirena in place for two and a half years, and I have never had any problem. After the initial months (three or so) my periods went back to normal, if lighter than before. They don't last very long -- perhaps 2 or 3 days -- and are very light. It's a dream! I really don't know why more women don't go for this form of birth control.

Hope this helps.

Hi, my child is also nine months old and I've had a mirena iud for about six months now. I haven't had any urinary tract infections or other problems. And, since I'm breastfeeding, I haven't yet had a period.

Hi K.
I had the Mirena put in 7 months ago. After the first two months of spotting and such that they warned me about my periods went right back to normal. Still the same flow amount and always at the same time of month. My Dr. did say that for some women their periods may not come back at all or that you might spot longer once it's put in place. I have not heard anything mentioned about UTI's being related to the Mirena so it never hurts to have your Dr. check things out.

I don't know about the UTI, but I think your response to the IUD in terms of your period can vary. As for me, I had maybe 3 periods around when I stopped nursing, all light and short in duration. I haven't had a period at all in 3-4 months now.

Hey K., I started with Mirena in November, my cycle has been seriously screwed up since then and I have had an UTI, which my FNP told me was possibly caused by the IUD. It's frustrating, I'm still holding out for that one year mark when they say the abnormal bleeding should stop, because this has been terrible so far. Good Luck, M.

Hi K.,
I have had the Mirena IUD for a couple of years now. I LOVE it. I had it put in not for birth control, but to control heavy bleeding during my periods. Initially, my periods were very long, longer than normal. After about 8 months, they tapered off to where I now only wear a mini pad during my periods. I never need a tampon anymore. I just have slight bleeding for about 5 days. It really solved my problems.

I've had no other issues with the Mirena at all. I hope this helps.

I had the mirena for a year and a half and loved it. For the first few months my periods were light and then eventually they went away. I would still have the symptoms but no cramping or bleeding, just the moodiness. I recently took it out to work on having my third and hopefully final child. I never had a UTI with it.

My understanding is that it's different for everyone. I can tell you my experience (though you may not want to hear this!). I had off and on bleeding for 6 months after having mine put in! Yes, that's months!!! I kept asking my OB/GYN about the advertising that says there's some slight bleeding and then you may not get your period at all. She said that the fine print says you can bleed for up to 6 months, and it's only if you go longer than 6 months that they are concerned. It was horrible, and I can tell you that I had serious doubts about this being an optimal form of birth control. I did not however have any other health issues.

I've now had it for 3 years, and my periods are fairly light (if at all). So, after the initial nastiness, they finally settled into a better routine. In some months, I feel all the other symptoms of getting my period and then I don't have any bleeding. In others, they are light to moderate bleeding. So, all in all, after the looooonnnnngggg 6 months, it is now OK. I still don't know if I would do it again, since it was really inconvenient initially.

Hi K.
I am on my second mirena. I had one from July 06 to July 07 and had it removed so we could try for baby #3. During that year I either didn't have a period or it was light light spotting for one day. I loved it! This time, I had it put in in May, so I've only had it a couple months. My first period was pretty normal, the second was long but not heavy. My normal period, without any type of BC is usually 7-8 days, very heavy all the way through so I'm still pleased with the mirena. I haven't had any uti's from it but my OB said those can happen more frequently after you have a baby.
