I was going to say get the girls together and go have a spa day, but there are so many other way cool suggestions on here that now that sounds lame and cliche! No matter wat you do I am certain that she will have a wonderful time with such good friends like you. :)

We have friends who own a local B&B and for my 40th, my husband invited all my friends to a good old fashioned slumber party. We "dressed up" in lots of costume jewelry, gloves, and hats and started out w/ a formal evening tea party which included cheesecake and the night went on from there. It was a fun night w/ the girlfriends. You wouldn't need the B&B but the dress-up part was hilarious and set the tone. Most of us were 40 something mamas who enjoyed the quiet nights' sleep and unhurried morning as much as staying up past our bedtime.

My daughter did this for her friend that turned 40. Everyone that was invited had to bring a gift that began with the letter F. Most were gag gifts. example: flower, folgers, filters, fish, etc. you get the idea. J. W

How about taking your friend out and you two get facials and pedicures? Something relaxing and pampering for her turning 40 -- a massage is also very nice and you could get them done together.

When I turned 40, my BF invited me out to dinner for a girls' night out. We were to meet at her house. When I got there, she said she wasn't quite ready and for me to come inside. When I walked in, all my closest friends were already inside! My pastor, who was also one of my girlfriends, was in her black robe and preached a short funeral on the "death of my youth"! We had a great time!! I am a Coca Cola collector, so my friends had all gone together to purchase an antique big red Coke sign for my coke room! It was a memorable event! Perhaps your friend collects something that is too expensive for just one person to give but is not too overwhelming for a group to purchase.

No Over the Hill stuff! Maybe like a coupon for a massage, manicure, pedicure, something like that. Happy 40th to your friend. I'm 50 now!
Blessings and long life,

H.,
I had THE BEST 40th birthday party. I had a hat party. Everyone had to come in some type of hat. I had a friend who flew in from Idaho and she made a hat that had a felt potato on top. My sister made a hat out of an ice cream bucket, frosted it with Royal frosting and stuck candles in the top. I met her at the door with her head on fire! My other three sisters came in the stepsister hats from Cinderella with the long scarves attached to them. We had a wedding veil, nurse cap, cowboy hat, baseball cap with long ponytail and I wore a tiara. It was a blast, not expensive and everyone had a great time. The pictures were so funny.
It is all about having fun, good food, great conversation and friends. I have had people tell me that my party was one of the best parties they had been to. People want to know what I am going to do for my 50th!
Have fun!
C.
