Hi R.! Take a Center for Yoga (15 Mile and Orchard Lake in West Bloomfield Plaza) - Slow Flow or Ashtanga Class -- good teachers there more for beginners would be Priyanka Shanbag, Allison Kaplan, Susanne Gorman, Cornell Colbert, or Jason Hulshof....check www.centerforyoga.com for schedule. If you go there, please tell them that M. Trame referred you and that it is one of your first times and that you are new to yoga. They will take care of you and help you = ) The philosophy with beginning yoga is this: you have to start somewhere and every body is different in terms of age, weight, health, flexibility, strength, and balance. DO NOT compare yourself to anyone who is there -- if you can do the pose, then let your body be in the pose without straining yourself. If you cannot do a pose then you can modify according to what your body feels it can do or come down into what is called "child's pose" for a break. The #1 most important part of any yoga class anywhere is the breathing -- slow rhythmic, deep, full breathing -- you will hear other students - it is called ujjayi breathing, the sound is made through the air flowing over the epiglotis. Focus on your breathing more than trying to compete, compare, or push yourself to hard with the postures. That (physical) will come with time and lots of dedication....if you would like to chat more send me a private message. I am a yoga teacher and oversee the CFY Community Class in Birmingham which is free, but sometimes might be challenging depending on the teacher. Namaste (the light within me recognizes and respects and loves the light within you).....

Wonderful people. Wonderful location. 2 studios running different types of class. NO MIRRORS :) because they are all about no-pressure.

You might want to check out their Slow Flow class first, so you can get situated. Go to the website and on the right side menu you can get the current schedule.

R.: I have been practicing yoga for 12 years. You have an amazing studio at Orchard Lake and 12 (northwest corner - back in the corner of the shopping center near the bridal studio and kids gym place) called Bikram Yoga. However, this yoga is very unique and you have to love heat. Classes are 90 minutes and the room is heated to approximately 100 degrees. Bring a yoga mat and a towel and a bottle of water. You might hate it, but you might love it and become addicted. Try it at least twice. This is not typical yoga. While meditative, it is not "spiritual" in the sense of incense and chanting "om". They only really offer the beginning series. It is performed in front of a mirror. People of all ages, sizes, shapes attend. The routine is always identical, which gives you a chance to learn the poses and improve. This yoga is great if you want to improve flexibility, change your shape, slim down. If you want more spiritual yoga - particularly if you have any addictive behaviors, try Yoga Shelter at 15 and Orchard Lake. They have a variety of different classes and you could call or go to their website and see which are considered beginner classes. A great middle of the road studio is at 15 and Lahser called Karma Yoga. They have a website also. Good luck and let me know how it goes, or email or post if you want more complete info! N.

There is a great yoga place in the strip at 12 & Orchard lake on the northwest corner. Also, there is a great paint store there too. They sell Benjamin Moore (quality paint) and are helpful with colors and advise. Don't forget to pick up a starbucks while you're there. That mall has everything!
