Best Way to Go Grey...

I am 40 years old and have been getting white hairs for the past 5 years. I'm not minding it at all and haven't tried to hide it with dye.. The transition has been going rather well as I am a dirty blonde and my lighter hair hasn't been contrasting with the white. But lately I have started to notice streaking. There are patches where the white hairs are more concentrated, and it looks like I am getting one of those "skunk tails". What can I do to help the transition better? Or should I just let it proceed on it's own path and embrace my racing stripes? ;)

What can I do next?

I am so jealous, I am 32 and I already have 1/4 of my hair gray. I do color it now but one day I will like it to be all gray, I think that if you feel comfortable and happy that shows and I have see many women with gray hair looking amazing.
If I was you I either would color my hair grey now (go to a professional) or I will color my hair lighter and lighter until I become almost gray.
I guess it depends in how ready are you on having full head gray.

I think I am embracing it as well? I had never colored my hair (all but one awful highlighting episode at the salon about 12 years ago)...then about 3-4 years ago, I did acolor-in-a-box at home deal...daughter and I did for fun to add sort of a purply/red color to our hair for a fun event...knowing it would wash out/fade in a month or so.

After than I thought..hey I can cover this grey/white stuff at my temples with a box kit. So I have a few times a year since then, but the colors have always sort of stained my scalp for a few days each time. I have a very sensitive scalp, keep my hair about chin length (front..shorter in back)..and hate the upkeep really....

So I think I am just embracing my color change as well. I am about to turn 42....and am a brunette...so let the racing stripes happen!

EDIT TO ADD: I also sort of have a new pet peeve the last number of years....you never know what a person, especially women "really" look like anymore. Eye color, hair color, etc. People get enhancements and boob jobs and colored contacts and a new haircolor every 2 months. I am not the most in shape person (I have my own personal 20 pound roller coaster and flabby arms, etc)....but really have become very low maintenance in the last few years. I am no "earth momma "type......and don't get me wrong...I do not mean to dis on anyone who does these things, not really. It just does drive me a bit nuts that I can never see a person with lovely eyes and think WOW...because in the same moment I think...they must be colored contacts....OK..SORRY for the sideways hi-jack!

I frosted my hair at this stage so that the streaks would be evenly distributed.

My hair is a mousy gray color naturally- course I hate my hair color- but the gray hair I have acquired in the past year is taking over the mousy . I am starting to get what my friend calls a "soul patch" one wide strip of gray right in the front. I am also still deciding whether or not i want to go gracefully gray or fight it all the way. My husband is almost all gray but men look "distinguished" he says my gray looks good I say it looks old. If you hair is dirty blond it is probably easier to hide just get maybe some highlights or low lights to break up the gray

you know, I swore I would not dye my hair....but after being called Grandma many times.....when I was picking up my son from school & being called my mother's sister. ......well, I called it quits on my refusal to embrace hair color.

I am so glad that I did! My hair was 50% gray/white. It is now a darker brown on the bottom & underneath. It is a multi highlight/lowlight on the top & sides....with some of the natural mousy brown/gray/white scattered thru. It works very well for my skin color & will not be an issue to have it touched up occasionally. My stylist said that the brown on the bottom won't need it for 6 months or so, with the top needing it every 3 months or so. Since my hair grows fast, I consider this an excellent game plan!

One of the problems I have with grey hair is that even the texture is different. I have friends who've embraced their gray hair. I have not. I do think that the gray instantly ages a person by 10 years. I'm in my early 50's and I live in my childhood town so I often see women I went to school with. All other things being equal - such as wrinkles, weight, etc - those with gray hair look like they are about 10 years older than those who are not gray.

I use L'Oreal (becuase I'm worth it - hahaha) and with a coupon and sale I can get my hair color for about $5. My hair is just shorter than shoulder length so it's reasonably easy to color. Every 6 weeks or so. Funny but I was looking at my roots in the mirror today and noticing how much grayer and weird textured they have become. I've been through a VERY stressful few months so I guess it's true that stress can make you gray!

Just my opinion. ;o) But if you do decide to stay gray I would suggest you follow MegandOllie's suggestion of coloring it all one shade of gray.

I'm working on the skunk tail but my stripe is not wide enough to look like it's on purpose so I put in highlights to blend the grey better. I like grey hair on other women; on me, it just looks old.

I would go to the salon and get it dyed grey. I'm not sure of any tectonically terms, but I had a friend that purposefully went grey for awhile.
