Best Sippy Cup for a One Year Old

Hi! My little man will be one March 3rd (2 more weeks goodness!) I have several different types of sippy cups such as the nuby, gerber, the one with the bottle type nipple for the spout, and just the cheap throw away ones. All of them seems to be too much for him to handle so he chokes or it spills out of his mouth. What is one that you would recommend that is relatively cheap but seems to work? Or, do I just need to keep practicing the sippy cup with him? *I have been practicing it with him since he was 9 months old and I am not seeing any positive results. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and insight! I went to the store to see if they had any of the sippy cups you guys had mentioned and honestly I was going to pick the cheapest one and work my way up from there. The straw sippy was 3 bucks on sale so I bought that and he did well with it. It still seemed like he got a bit too much but he did so well I will keep this one b/c I already have literally 5 different brands and multiple sets of each brand. Too much cabinet space haha. Hopefully this one works and he gets around to liking the other brands so I can rotate between them and get my money's worth!

Try no using the valve in them until he gets the hang of it, or use a straw top cup. My last one didn't do a sippy until he was close to two but used the straw top cups with no problem starting around one.

I absolutely love the Playtex ones you can buy at Target. They come in fun colors, the top screws on, the child has to tilt the cup to drink from it, and it DOES NOT LEAK!!!!

We have tried almost every cup on the market and this is the only we found that doesn't leak!!!!

My son had to ease into different cups at different stages. The nubby were OK for that but he didn't like that the spout was so large. At 1 year he would only drink out of a straw... so I bought the straw sippys which are supposed to be better for their teeth anyway (playtex makes the best and easiest to clean! Stay away from Munchkin - Target - they were difficult to put the straw back once washed.) He would also drink from a pop-top on a regular water bottle, so I bought a bunch of those and would fill the water bottle with whatever. soon he was able to drink from a regular cup with a lid (tupperware) and then around 18 months he would finally use a regular sippy cup (playtex is my favorite).

You might want to just do a little progression thing for your son since it might make it easier on him. But I know it is a little frustrating to try different brands since they are pricey. I never used the "baby" sippy cups with the double handles since they don't hold much liquid and took up so much cabinet space.

My last 2 children would only use the Gerber Trainer ( it has a soft spout that is flat, a removable valve, and two handles). I had a hard time finding it. Most of the time Target would have them and sometimes Walmart. They were a bit pricey (I think $6 each), but they were they only ones they would take from about 11 months to 18 months.
Hope this helps!! Good luck!

If you want something that isn't plastic, Kleenkanteen makes a nice stainless steel one and it come in many colors. I loved the ones I got for my daughter.

The thing that all of those you named have in common seems to be that they have a wide spout. Maybe he needs to try something with a smaller spout so that his mouth isn't open so much when the liquid comes out?

As far as brands go, I can't think of them specifically. I would recommend trying to find some of those that are stainless, like Sigg and Kleen kanteen, if they still sell the sippy spouts. I would rather have 3 good sippies to rotate and cleen than a bunch of cheap plastic ones that will leach into whatever he's drinking. The stainless ones are SO much easier to find than they were back when I shopped for sippies.

I like the Avent Magic Trainers. They have a soft rubber spout and you can remove the "valve" depending on if you want them to have to suck to get liquid out or not. My son is 9 months and I always offer it to him (with water) with meals, for practice. You can get a 2-pack for about $7.

It feels like I went through a million cups before I found the one I liked best. My little one used (and still does) a soft spout Gerber cup. It has handles that are open on the bottom. This is great because I can slip the handle into my jean pocket.

I saw the rating is not super high, but I really like these cups- these are similar to what I use but these do not have a handle

My 1 year old likes the Playtex Little Grippers as well as the Playtex brand with a straw. Have you thought about trying one with a straw??

Yay, almost one year. You made it! :)

For sippy cups, my son seemed to like the "first sipper" with handles from Playtex that I got at babiesrus.

The nipple part is still a little soft, even though it looks like it's hard plastic. He didn't take to it right away, but I would offer it in the afternoon when he was thirsty (I was trying to get him off the bottle) and in just a couple of days, he was a pro. Hopefully you don't have to spend too much $$ on finding the right cup. Good luck!
