So What Happened?

Well, Thank you. What a great response from all of you. Not sure if my friend tried any of your ideas, but it was worth it. She said that she thinks it is a sinus infection and it is working itself out so did not call the doctor. She has her weekly pregnancy doctors appointment tomorrow, so I hope she will remember to ask/tell her doctor about it since she forgot last Wednesday!

Tell her to go to the doctor and get a strep test - untreated strep throat can lead to more serious problems

She should contact her doctor immediately. If she has strep throat it could be dangerous for her baby.

Hi A.,
Your friend needs to be tested for strep and maybe mono. At 36 weeks I do think the Dr may prescribe Pennicillin if she is positive for strep.

I see alot of responses already..but I use apple cider vinegar & salt with warm water to gargle with. It has always helped with sore throats. But like others have said she should consult with a doctor to make sure it is just a sore throat. Don't want her undertreating a serious problem or worrying too much about it.

Of course she should see her doctor to be sure she doesn't need a prescription, but either way, I always gargle with tea tree oil and water. Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, and anti fungal, so it will probably cure the sore throat. Always does for me and my family. Although I purchase mine online from Melaleuca, I do believe that you can get high quality tea tree oil from the pharmacy or a health food store. You might have to ask the pharmacist and have them order it, but when I did that before, they had it in their store the next day. Just make sure it is pure tea tree oil because you don't want to gargle a hair product or something! I would be very surprised if this didn't work for her. And it is completely safe for the baby.

I recently went through this holistic sore throat cure with my son (9yrs. old) who had a wicked sore throat, red and swollen, hard to swallow. So here's a couple of things to try. For immediate relief gargle cayenne pepper and water. The cayenne is a natural pain reliever...she'll be able to eat and swallow, very important for the little one ;) Also throughout the day for about three days make an apple cider vinegar tea. The apple cider vinegar is like a natural anti-biotic. It kills whatever it touches on contact. So sip on the tea all day. Here's a recipe that I used. (She could drink it hot or cold really)

Cup of hot water
3 tablespoons ACV
3 tablespoons Honey (I used maple syrup because we're vegan)
3 tablespoons lemon juice.

Since I made this for my son...I added OJ to mask the taste of the ACV and brewed it with some mulled spices...

The other really great thing she can do in between is to chew/suck on whole cloves. You bite a bit of it and just suck on it. It acts as a natural cough drop/sore throat losange. (sp? never had to spell that before)

I hope that it helps her because it worked for him!! Good luck!

I guess you mean she can't take any OTC drugs? Try some hot water with lemon and honey. Good luck! Sometimes, too, (depending on the sore throat) gargling with mouth wash helps - it kind of kills the bacteria in the back of the throat and numbs it at the same time.

I would recommend that she get some ginger root and peel and thinly slice 6-7 slices. Steep in boiling water till cool enough to drink adding honey (pasteurized of course) to taste as the ginger tea is very spicy. But it works wonders for a sore throat.

She might want to check to be sure she doesn't have strep. But right away to help the sorness gargle with warm salt water. drink Throat Coat tea with honey. This helps relieve some of the pain. This might sound crazy but she needs to get a new tooth brush as the tooth brush can contain the germs re-infecting her throat.

Tell your friend to gargle with warm salt water several times a day and if the problem doesn't improve, she should see a doctor.

As for you, Try to relax and take one day at a time...be good to yourself and try to enjoy all that you do...

Hi A.,

Do either you or your friend know about Louise Hay? Her modern approach to health issues is very interesting. I know from personal and others experiences there is a likelyhood that as well as the stresses that come with pregnancy there may be something you friend needs to say to someone and is reluctant to do so for some reason.

The other suggestion I have relates to Glyconutrients. Have either of you heard of them? I would be happy to give you more info if you would like it as with pregnancy there are so many hormonal changes that it may be related to that.

I hope to hear from you.

Has your friend contacted her doctor for a diagnosis? Sore throats aren't a normal part of pregnancy, and sometimes women forget that when they're pregnant, they can get sick with normal things like they would at any other time. If she has strep, or allergies, a doctor can tell her what is considered "safe" to take during pregnancy and let her know the side effects of any medications - a pharmacist can as well.

I'll tell you what works and it is not fun. I have had a sore throat and tried to wait it out and do all the cough drops, etc. stuff but have gotten to the point, now that I'm older, to just:

Gargle with warm salt water, as often as once an hour. Make the water solution as salty as possible. Hold the salt in the throat as long as possible before getting rid of it. This might make you gage but it works.

The salt seems to draw all the swelling and mucus out of the throat and soon the nose starts running.

I have also found that I sleep a lot in between the gargling.

Hope your friend feels better soon.

About Me: I'm 60 years old, have been married 38 years and have two grown sons.

Ugh, sounds like me right before I gave birth, came down with a horrible cold right before my son was born, so my nose was running the entire time I was in labor. It was the last thing I wanted to worry about, yet I had to keep blowing my damn nose.
Anyway, I would have her contact the dr. to make sure it's nothing more than just a sore throat...better to be safe. In the meantime, good old fashioned cough drops worked for me.

Hi A., I know all the rules have changed over the years as far as meds. but I have 5 children and always got a bad sore throat when allergy season got bad. If it is from a post nasal drip a decongestant will help. Throat spray works too as does gargling with a mix of peroxide and mouthwash. The old fashioned salt and water works too. Actually the motion the throat makes when gargling brings oxygen to the area and healing. Keep the throat moist with cough drops. Best wishes, I know how uncomfortable a sore throat can be. Oh! have you checked with the Dr. to see that it is not strep? Take care, Grandma Mary

Mix up a gallon of salt water, 8 level tsp salt to 1 gal water is what the doctor gave me, and gargle once every hour.
It really works! L.
