Hi! I need to get a sheet cake for my daughter's birthday. I was wondering what you think the most delicious one is? I live in the Los Angeles area. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I got a great one from Pavilions in Culver City for my daughters 1st b-day (received lots of compliments on it). CostoCo also has cheap and very good sheet cakes.

Vons/Pavillions makes a VERY good chocolate cake! I can't vouche for any other flavors.
I don't care for Costco, but butter cream frosting always tastes like CRISCO to me, and their butter cream (white or "chocolate") just tastes like lard.
Portos is very good but order ahead.
Having accidentally discovered how good Vons' cakes were, in a pinch one time, that's where I always go now!

Try Porto's in Glendale or Burbank. It's a very busy bakery, but its cakes are hugely popular. It does customized birthday cakes.

I love the cakes from Portos Bakery (there's one in Glendale and one in Burbank). You can go in to preorder the cake and select from their designs or bring a photo that they can scan and lay onto the top of the cake. The cakes are really moist and delicious! Good luck!

You have definitely been given the best cakes I know of. My cousin/dear friend always brings Portos for our family birthdays. They have a great variety and are yummy. My mother always gets Costco's, also great. Better than most bakeries I know. BUT my absolute favorite is the King's Hawaiian Paradise cake!! While i love it for all our family birthday it's especially good for a childrens birthday, this is why:
Its a very light sponge cake, with 3 flavored layers. When you cut into it, you see green, pink and orange with very light whip cream-like frosting in between, kids love it! You can get fruit between the layers or not, I opt for not, if it's a toddler or daycare birthday party. It's very light and refreshing. The kids in my sons daycare were
eating 2nd and 3rd heapings. Adults love it too, I first tasted it at my brothers wedding, an eleborate five layered wedding cake, each with 3 colored layers, I was hooked. Hehehe ;)
On top, you have a few options, if your getting a sheet cake, thru have a giant book
of designs (themes, characters etc) to choose from or you can request one. If you get a smaller round one, it's decorated with a 3 color gel on top with whipped cteamlike frosting and colored sprinkles, they can only add a message I.e. Happy birthday Jim! It's very colorful, the kids in my sons daycare were oooing and ahhing over it.
For my sons 1st birthday, we got a curious George sheet cake with palm trees. For my sons 3rd bday, we got a round cake which I added Mickey mouse clubhouse character on toothpicks to that I bought at the party store. I live in marina del Rey but it's worth the drive to Torrance for me. Oh, also a special treat for kids if you go, the have a rainbow hawaiin bread in the bakery, by the loaf. It's got colors swirled thru it, but just tastes like bread. I make p&j sandwiches or grill cheese on their birthday weekend, my friend said it's wonderful for French toast too!
trees around him. Very cute! For my sons's 3rd bday, we got a round cake

People always are shocked at how good Costco's sheet cakes are. But if you want a little more variety, and cakes that are still inexpensive but delicious, try Porto's Bakery in Glendale or Burbank. And while it's not my favorite, if you like a strawberry-and-whipped cream cake, the Phoenix Bakery in Chinatown (L.A.) has been popular for years.

I agree w/ the Costco recommendation. I actually had it at my wedding (in the back to be cut up of course!).

We went to Porto's in glendale for our daughter's baptism and we went to Vons for her 1st birthday. Both were delicious but we were amazed at how much everyone loved the one from Vons. Everyone kept asking - who is your baker? We will go there from now on because of the great price and beautiful choices for decoration. And no waiting in line!

We swear by the paradise cake from king's Hawaiian bakery. It's a couple layers of super soft sponge cake with light icing and fresh fruit/fruit gel in between. We didn't have it this year because the plac we had my son's party provided the cake & everyone was bummed. Hope your lil girl enjoys her bday

Actually, Costco makes a great cake! Another good choice is Pavillions bakery, believe it or not - they make these "Cupcake Cakes". It is a cake, made up of all cupcakes, so you don't have to cut it. Frosted and designed as a cake, but on a series of cupcakes all put together. I have done that for the past 3 years with much success and many compliments! They have a tons of designs available.

You can't beat the taste and the price of the Costco cake. I like the chocolate or the white cake with the strawberry mousse filling.
Good luck!
