Best Baby Carrier for Nursing and Walking at the Same Time?

My little one is going through a growth spurt and is nursing ALLLLLLL the time, and I really want to be able to get up and walk around, without disrupting her nursing! My ideal would be to be able to go for a stroll outside while carrying her and giving her access to nursing when she wants it. We have a little sling but she outgrew it pretty quickly and complains when i put her in it because she gets kind of squished. We also have a baby bjorn that she loooves to be carried around in, but it doesn't work for nursing. Any ideas on carriers that are good for this?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the fantastic responses - for some reason it never occured to me that I could try nursing her in a sort of semi-upright position like in in ergo, I figured in the ergo she'd be sitting up too much for it to work but after seeing all the suggestions for the ergo I am going to go try it out this weekend - can't wait! I've heard great things about the ergo anyway but the price tag was keeping me away, but if I can nurse in it too then I'm sold. Thanks again ladies.

There's a babywearing group here in Salem that could help called MammaRoo, but also there's a gal named Susan that has her own online botique of slings and carriers. She's awesome! She was speaking at a mommy's group that I'm in and I bought an Angel Pack from her and she came to my house and help me fit it so that it would be comfortable and gave me another free! (Moby Wrap) you could call her and ask her, she's kind of an expert. Here's her site...

Okay, this is totally going to depend on how old your child is and how big your body is. My best friend can nurse her 10 month old in the Mai-Tai carrier (one of the best styles out there). However, your baby needs to be able to hold her head up before you can use it. The other suggestion is the Moby wrap (my favorite for 0-12m). The Moby wrap is super comfortable and you can keep it on easily when the baby isn't in it. You will have to wear a shirt that comes down from the top, but other than that you can nurse with it. Good luck!

The ergo worked great for me as well. I started using it when my little guy was about 6 weeks old. He had good head control really early so I never used the infant insert - just was really careful to support his head. I was able to nurse while walking in public with this and it's VERY comfortable. We used it ALL the time, especially before he was able to sit up, etc. Now he like to be mobile on his own, but I still use it when he gets fussy or I walk with him. I haven't mastered wearing him on the back, but I plan too and have seen tons of people doing it quite happily. My husband also used the ergo on a daily basis the first few months - it's really excellent. I was able to hang the laundry in the yard, do dished, etc. while he was sleeping in it.

Good luck!

I have just about every style of carrier known to man! I have a bad back and have tried them all. Hands down for walking and nursing is the MOBY. It is about the best thing baby on earth!! i was walking through the mall nursing my 7 month old son and no one had any idea!! they come in a million colors and depending on where you buy it they cost anywhere from 39.99 to 50 dollars. you can get them at target.com or any other speciality baby store. try looking at MOBY.com. When you buy one, you get this booklet that shoulds you all the different ways to wrap it and there is a nursing style wrap. i have found though you can make your own wrap versions with it too. hope this helps!! good luck

I have had no problems nursing in an ergo, I just lengthened the straps to lower baby a bit and pull up the hood for privacy.
My little one is 1.5 years now and still loves being carried around in our ergo. It is kinda pricey, but IMO worth it and you can use it for a long time.

MOBY WRAP! It is so comfortable, with the weight distributed well across shoulders, back, and hips--I LOVE mine, and once last week when my husband left the house earlier than usual, and it was time for baby to nurse and my 5 yr old to catch the bus--we nursed in it walking to the bus stop. My almost 6 month old loves to be in it out shopping--she hasn't even taken a stroller ride yet, which I should start, but when I have all three out, it's easier for my little boys to ride our sit'n'stand or have 2yr.old in the cart, 5yr old walking, baby in the Moby Wrap. It's truly a gem.

I use the baby k'tan from Target. It's reasonably priced (I think about $40, or even a little less). It is wrap-like, but more stable and you can use it for a number of different carrying positions. And the fabric is wide enough to provide enough privacy for nursing.

Here is another vote for the Moby Wrap. When my daughter was 5 months, my husband had a conference he had to go to in Paris. Well, we tagged along and used walking tour cards everday. While my husband worked, my daughter and I explored. I had her in the Moby, since Paris isn't very stroller friendly. We walked all day, she nursed, napped, and greeted everyone while enjoying her ride in the Moby. It was fantastic. It was easy on my back and very comfortable to wear all day.

I used it at home, too. Also, with my little guy who had colds for the first 6 months of his life. He had to be upright so much to drain out the mucous and the Moby was a life saver. I could take care of his needs and still try to get things done and play with my daughter.

I give the Moby for a shower gift these days.
Good luck,
D.

I recommend the Ergo for walking and nursing. The best part is that there is even a piece of fabric that can be drawn up over the top and secured - effectively shielding both baby and boob. For a few bucks more, they have an organic line.

I also LOVE the Moby and would choose that if I were allowed only one baby item in the world. :)

I love the Ergo too. Not only did it work great for nursing, but it supported my back. I still use it and my guy is 2 ½. It's the only carrier I ever needed (and I tried many) and the only carrier I kept.

For a little one like yours, the Moby is awesome. I would be happy to show you how to nurse in it and the different positions you can carry your baby with it. It may be a little overwhelming with the fabric at first, but once you figure it out, it is easy and extremely comfortable for both mother and baby. Plus it's extremely discrete.

I live in Tualatin and carry every color and you can come over and see them and try some on to see if it's something that would work for you before buying one.

hi- i'm surprised that the baby bjorn is not working for you to nurse and walk. i find that of all my carriers this one works the easiest at this time, i like that i can lengthen the straps and go. my daughter never would use the baby bjorn to nurse, but my new little guy is fine with it. i have the moby wrap, it is good to nurse in, it's just so consuming for me to take my guy half way out and re situate to nurse. the ergo is my favorite of all carriers. my 3 1/2 year old grew up in it and now i have a 3 month old. he hates the insert, and now is just big enough for me to wear him in the ergo with no support. this was convenient for me to nurse my daughter and i'm sure my little guy will enjoy it too. for easiest to use, most comfortable, most versatile, and best to use with an older child, i highly recommend the ergo. i love the moby, i just prefer the ease of snap and go with the ergo! good luck. Ergo Baby carrier is the best carriers out there and very easy to use and breastfeed in. www.ergobabycarrier.com i have one and a couple of my cousins have one and i bought one for my bestfriend. they are the only one that does not hurt your back i can wear it for a two hour trip through the zoo and be fine. it is a life saver when you have more than one kid to get free hands.

Try an Ergo or a wrap carrier like a Moby. Some stores will let you try before you buy or check if there's a lending library in your area. If you're looking at long term investment, the Ergo is probably better since she'll outgrow the Moby's stretchiness before she gets to be 20 pounds and the Ergo goes to 40+. Good luck!
