Bermuda Grass or St. Augustine Grass??

So, we have both in our yard, but definitely way more Bermuda. I personally like the soft texture of Bermuda, but so many sources online suggest St. Augustine is better and way to keep Bermuda out ... Anyone care to share what type of lawn grass you have and why you'd prefer one over the other!?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Love bermuda, but our st augustine choked it out. I am fine and like the hardiness of the st augustine. For useit was easier to let the augustine take over.

Like you, I have both in my back yard. The last poster is right about the burmuda taking over flower beds! I hate it! The saint augustine is great! It's greener, thicker, and looks better.

I too have both grasses, one in the front, the other in the back which we did on purpose because of sun/shade ratio. I wish I had never planted the St. Augustine because of the problems I've had with it and the extra time/cost to correctly maintain.
You can research it on the web but what I've learned is that it needs more water due to the shallow roots, should be mowed more frequently and is more susceptible to disease.

Two years ago we got big patches of dead grass in the St. Augustine that we tried to get to grow back by fertilizing and pulling the weeds that started to grow there and we still have bald spots. We have now hired a company to help bring it back. The only place it really looks good is the east (less sun) side of our house.

The Bermuda is one tough grass that as long as we fertilize on a schedule, mow once to twice a week and water deeply about twice a week we never have a problem with it. As far as the flower beds go just spray round-up by the edge of your beds (careful around other plants) and that will keep the grass in check. This grass won't grow in very much shade though.
Any grass, including shade types, is going to need at least 4 hours of sun. For heavy shade try a ground cover instead.
Maybe you should try the Zoyzia!

I don't know anything about St. Augustine, but Bermuda is very hardy, and doesn't take as much water, but it takes over everything , flowe beds etc. So if you just have lawn and thats all, you may like it, but if you have flower beds etc. you may not like it.

We have a large wooded lot, lots of shade and we use St Augustine.

Other neighbors, not on wooded lots and backing up to the park area have bermuda.

We've had no issues with St Augustine and like it.

At the other home we built, we were on a golf course and we used strictly bermuda and always had a great looking yard there as well. Bermuda tolerates the sun more.
