Hello everyone, my name is K. and i just had a son 6 weeks ago i am a male too lol, i see that everyone on here is normally female, i have a seriouse question reguarding my son he has a belly button hernia i see that for sure, but it is kinda purple and blue and when you push on it you feel like a sqush kinda feeling it sticks out WAY out and i am worried so is my fieonce we have been watching it but today are going to actually go out to the hospital ER to have someone look at it. I was just wondering if there was any information you can give me with this and any help, also he does not seem to discomforted by it but sometimes he cries for no reason and i do not think he is cholic then again he can be i have a thought that maybe his hernia is bothering him thanks again to all of your help i am just new and worried about the biggest blessing known to man.
Hello again everyone we went to the doctor and he said that it will deff need surgery but just to watch it and make sure that it is not hard or anything like that it is nice to know that he is going to be okay, my mom gave me the name K. off of a door nob lol long story it is nice to see that I'm not alone she decided to spell it diffrent everyonealways tries to put a c and a I but I like it the way it is thank you so much for all your concerns and help if I ever need anything again I know who to come to thanks a lot for all your help god bless
My daughter had one also, but we never did anything to push it in. The doctor told us to leave it alone, and if it didn't go in on its own, then they would deal with it. She had it for probably 6 months, but it went in on its own. She is 14 years old now and has a perfect belly button.
Most babies belly buttons poke out some, and more poke out even more when they cry. The purple color may be leftover betadine they used to clean his belly button when he was born, it may take a while to wash off. To be on the safe side I would have it looked at to check for a hernia.
hernias normally dont hurt unless you mess with them. hes a new born they cry. im surprised your doctor hasnt said anything about this. take him to his ped instead of the er
I'm glad you are taking him in to be on the safe side, but you may not need to go to the ER. Call the his ped's office and talk to a nurse first.
Our daughter also had a herniated belly button (not blue, though) and it stayed that way for awhile and healed itself after several months. I was never told to push it back in, but to just leave it alone.
I believe this is fairly typical, but since it is black/blue, I would at least call the nurse's line at the doctor and ask if you need to bring him in. You don't want to pay for an ER visit if you don't have to.

Congratulations on your son. Our daughter had a mild hernia and we were told to keep an eye on it and push it in any time we saw it sticking out. You don't want to leave it out to continue to turn purple and blue, it could cause the intestine to die/get infected and cause complications. If it is a bad hernia they might due surgery to fix it. Our daughter is 18 months and has almost completely grown out of it. Good luck.
My oldest son had a belly button hernia also. His belly button stuck way, way out. I asked my pediatrician about it and he said that my son should outgrow it and if he didn't then they would operate on it and fix it. He outgrew it by the time he was nine months old (maybe younger, I don't really remember). But it was so unusual looking because it stuck out about an inch. It didn't cause him any discomfort, it was purely cosmetic but we were still very happy when it gradually corrected itself. But you might want to have it checked out by your pediatrician anyway. Have you had the doc look at his belly button and tell you it is a hernia? It may not be and may just be an outie. Our son's belly button stuck out farther than we thought and the doc felt around to see if there was a hernia. There was not, his just has an outie. We took him to see a specialist and the doc said that as he grows it may get smaller. He is small so he eventually will grow to fit it. If it is a hernia, you must talk to the doc about removing it. It can be very painful for the little guy later on. Don't worry too much, just make sure to ask at his next appt which should be soon since he is so young. And if he does not have an appt any time soon, go ahead and make one just so you feel better. Make sure you clean his belly button like they taught you at the hosptital. Make sure it is not infected.

I have over 30 years experience with children and have seen several ambilical hernias all fo which have gone away on their own. This is not an emergency but can be examined by your Dr. on your next visit.
Congrats on the arrival of your baby! I can relate, my daughter had a belly button hernia too, her belly button would stick way out it looked pretty bad. The doctor said not to worry that it would go away on its own and it did after a few months (I think by age 5 months it was completely gone).
What we did was put a a belly wrap/band made with gauze bandage around her waist, this physically pushed in the belly button and kept it flat. after a few weeks it started to stay in a bit more until it went away on its own.
By the way the doctor told us that this doesn't hurt so your baby's crying might be just from passing gas, being sleepy, hungry, wet/soiled diaper etc. Babies do cry a lot when the are this little, my first had colic and it was really h*** o* us.
