Good information pass it along.

Go to this link and enter your street address...it will show a "house" in the middle of the map, that's your house... all the little colored boxes are registered Sex Offenders... click on them and you get a name, address & picture of the person along with his crime... pretty amazing and scary...it shows you where they live in proximity to your home and the local schools. Color codes indicate what "type" offender it is.

Dear L.,

I found the web site very unhelpful. First, the map was so large it took in many, many miles around my house. When I tried to zoom in it informed me that it didn't have a closer map of my area. I live within two miles of Five Points, the center of Atlanta, so that is a serious flaw. Then I clicked on the only red "offender square" anywhere near my house. Nothing happened. I tried other red squares at random, and some of them gave names and offenses, but the two nearest my house gave nothing. And finally, I put in the name of the only sex offender I personally know anything about. He was convicted in 2004, so I am sure he is still on the Georgia list. However, the web site had no information on him. I think this web site may claim to do a lot more than it really is capable of doing.

All the best with your imminent birth.

Thank you for the info. I went on this site and found out that there are a few offenders not even a mile away. Something every parent should know thank you again. Congrats on the new addition. Good Luck.

L.,

That is good information to have, but don't let it give you a false sense of security. Always pay attention to those around your child.

DeKalb County has a 3% conviction rate for child molesters. That does not include the pleas made to a non-sexual offense. Considering how few of these crimes make it to prosecution or trial, that is abysmal. So that means that those who make it to sex offenders registry is a very small number of those who could be dangerous.

Never be afraid to confront someone who you think is exhibiting inappropriate behavior towards a child. They may not have done anything, but you've just let them know that you are paying attention.

When your child is old enough, check out the Safe Side Video put out by John Walsh. Go to www.safeside.com for free information and a free informational dowload.

I just purchased this for my 4 year old and 2 year old. It is such a great video. They liked watching because it is silly, but at the same time, it teaches them very well.

Congratulations on your new baby boy. Watch out because the little boys will pee on you. Good Luck and enjoy your baby.
