Looking for a bday gift for my best friend's 5 year old son. Looking for suggestions... (for example, they just gave us the CD/DVD combo "ABCs" by They Might Be Giants, for my 3 yo son. It is the BEST!! The kids love it, and we do too..)

What can I do next?

My son just got the game Zingo for his fourth birthday, and it would definitely be appropriate for a 5-year-old. Every kid who has tried it here so far loves it. It's like Bingo except you try to beat other people to getting the little tile for your card, and one of the players is in charge of the tile dispenser, which delivers two random tiles every time you push it down. The tiles have picture and word combinations rather than numbers. I'm probably not doing the best job desribing this, but it's a fun game that a 5-year-old could even play by himself, or it's fun for the whole family.

the five year old may be into transformers. if you're looking for educational stuff look into leapfrog leapster. if you're looking into DVDs any leafrog dvd are awesome (math circus, letter factory, word chaser etc).

Legos. My son and all of his friends started getting into Legos when they were five. Guaranteed hit.

I have a 4 year old boy but I have found those Magnetix a great present. When I sent them to my nephew when he was 5 he was all over them. They have magnetic balls and rods and can be in all sorts of positions. Also I have a specialty kids store where I live and they have all sorts of cool things like kits to make sticky creatures to dinosaur digs. Another place to check out is online at Young Explorers. These are not the run of the mill toys so less chance of him getting double.

I have a 5 yr old and he loves cars and drawing. He is big time into sports and he loves puzzles. You should ask her what he is into and get some ideas. Boys love to build things so they can knock them over. 5 yr olds have a very active imagination and love to use them when building and playing. My son will build tracks for his cars and trucks out of pieces of wood or plastic lids and sit and play for hours. But, I have found asking the parents what they are into or what they like the best or even what the child asked for is sometimes the easiest things to get with out all the stress. Good luck.

5 year old is the perfect time for building things - I would suggest a Lego Bucket - the kind that he can choose to build anything he wants, using his imagination. (At this age avoid the kind where there are directions to build a certain item like a helicopter, too advanced for 5). Other ideas are Tubations and Saxaflute by Quircetti - simple tube like things that you can put together - looks like it would not do much, but it is amazing what they can build. Building things is fun, but also sparks their imagination, fine motor skills, and intelligence!
