Okay - I have two questions today - already asked one...this one is about toilet lid up or down...not the seat - but the lid....it is MY PERSONAL OPINION that the lid belongs DOWN - a bathroom just looks cleaner/neater this way....

what's your opinion?

What can I do next?

YAY!!! It looks like the "downs" have it!! Whew!!!

I'm happy to see that others think it makes a bathroom look neater!

How cool that your cat pees in the toilet!!! I wonder if we can train dogs to do that?!?!? :)

THANKS PEEPS!!!

The lid is down. Why? Because I close it when I flush the toilet. Why? Because I was watching this news show (don't remember which one) and they showed how high the water, pee and poop particles fly out of the bowl every time you flush! gross! They were testing people's toothbrushes and there was fecal matter on them. Since then, lid is closed every time we flush in this house.

Lid down, but that's just because I don't want my dogs drinking out or it, or my daughter to try and go swimming in it.

Our lids stay down and our toothbrushes stay in the vanity drawers. Like other posters, I've heard the 'particle theory' from flushes and whether or not it is true, it just skeeves me out to think about it! :)

I also agree that it looks cleaner and neater. The thing I LOVE about our home is that in the master bathroom, the toilet is in it's own little room with a door and that door stays shut, too. I think toilets are just ugly...

DOWN DOWN DOWN!! I am disgusted when I walk into peoples homes to first, see the bathroom door wide open (we close ours here) and to top it off, the lid is up. It's nasty, pee and poop particals fly around the bathroom when you flush, this has been proven!! I am so grateful I married a man who agrees with this and thinks it's gross, he is super clean in the bathroom and he has taught our 7yo son to be just as clean, LOVE HIM FOR THIS!!!! Yep, again, down to be sanitary and neat.

It looks neater, yes, but also, after having replaced two hairbrushes in a week after my toddler dropped hers (and guess where it landed!), it's cheaper just to keep the lid down all the time, too. Toddlers aren't the only folk who drop things.

Not only that, but I have a cabinet above the toilet, which I can't reach without standing on the lid.

Ours is always up unless I'm doing something that requires for it to be down. I dont know why, but I dont like them down, its like you have to open it and look in it if you open the lid... wondering what surprises might be in it.
I always leave it up unless I'm visiting someone's home and it was down when I used it, I'll put it down before I leave the bathroom.

I once heard a MAN say on the radio that the toilet is basically an appliance so the lid should be CLOSED.

You wouldn't leave the door of the oven open or the microwave door open so why would you leave the lid open?

I'm STILL in shock a MAN said this! LOL.

I prefer it down, but most of the time (I live with three boys) it is up. I have acutally kicked my kids out of "my" bathroom unless they promise to put lid down, but they forget. Oh well.
FYI: did you know if you don't put lid down before you flush microscopic particles fly in the air - where is your toothbrush.
Another case for keeping the lid closed - LOL!

I like it down, but the men in my house leave it up and one of them even leaves the seat up. I try, but this is a losing battle for me and not the best one for me to pick to fight. That said, I still prefer it down...

ALWAYS down! Not only does it look cleaner and nicer, it prevents any germs from getting back out lol. I watched a thing on toilets and bathrooms actually, and they said if you dont close the lid before you flush the "potty germs" can fly up in the air 6-8 feet! and get in the air. Gross!! So, I always make sure its down even more than I did before.

I live in a house that's all boys (sans me). Both in those who live here and 90% of those who are over here.

Therefore, in our house, seat up generally speaking. I'm the only one who needs it down. Since the seat's up. So is the lid.

Added benefit... there's never any 'surprise!' pee on MY seat. Ha. Victory.

Down, Down, DOWN!!! I read or heard something years ago that said every time you flush the toilet, the water (and whatever other substance(s) are in there) can fly out up to something crazy like 15 feet!! I don't remember where I heard it, but it stuck with me, that's for sure! I know my toothbrush is less than 15 feet, and so is my FACE! The lid is to go down & stay down when not in use in my house!

I agree with V.M.-
It's actually a policy at my office to keep the lids down. My boss strongly believes the feng shui thing.
My aunt is vietnamese and I was very familiar with the philosophy.
I prefer down, but I admit that sometimes in the middle of the night I don't think about it when I'm half asleep and go in to tinkle and sit on the lid.
Not my favorite aspect of the lid being down, but I still prefer it.

I prefer the lid down personally. I think it looks cleaner and nicer and I feel cleaner... However, my hubby prefers it up and he has a bad back so I leave it up for him. I also have little kids who leave it up just in case... although, I have a one year old so I'm constantly putting their lids down..LOL So I'm a lid down person but the rest of my family are lid up people...LOL

I'm surprised there are so many lids down people. I am definitely a seat down and lid down person. When I visit friends houses, I often see the lid up. I don't like it when people visit my house and forget to put the seat down!

It looks cleaner.... more presentable! The lid down will prevent accidents from happening such as make up/brush falling off the sink's counter top and into the toliet. I also put that stuff away when I am done using it. I don't like make up, hair spray, etc.... laying out on my countertop. (Less clutter.... the better.)

LOL LOL LOL. What responses. I love this site. It takes all kinds.

To the ones that had concerns about microscopic particles in the air when flushing . . . unless you have a very unusual toilet that has an airtight seal between the seat and the base and an airtight seal between the lid and the seat the microscopic particles find their way between the lid and seat and base. BTW, if you pass gas and can smell it, guess what microscopic particles are going in the air and where they just came from? ;~))

Some people have such paranoia about "germs", they will throw perfectly good food away, just because the calendar has changed and the meat in the freezer is now "out of date". (I was invited over to a friends house for a cook out. She took 4 T-bone steaks out of her freezer, noted that they "expired" the day before and threw them in the trash because they were "out of date" by one day(!!!!).)

Thanks for the question. Good luck to you and yours.

LOL! As always, you are cracking me up.

I like it down when I am in there, simply because I am always doing a million things (carrying a baby, doing my hair, etc) and worry something will fall in the toilet as I rush around.

And I do agree that it looks neater and cleaner down.

I don't care either way really. I don't even mind the toilet seat being up after the boys use it. I just put it down....takes seconds. There is no way the lid would stay down in my home for long.

honestly, i've never really thought about it :). if it's at night i would say up because i go to the bathroom a few times a night and as i'm stumbling into the bathroom, i don't want to have to think to lift the lid :). also my son waits until the last minute to go, so he'd probably not make it if he had to lift the lid. i guess for my house, it just depends on who's in there. sometimes it's up, sometimes it's down

i think the main lid should be down, for one, things won't fall in there and the other, according to Dr. Oz when flushed, spray and vapors fly up contaminating thing around, coffee cup, tooth brush, toilet paper.......and it looks neater.

I completely agree! Who wants to walk in someone's bathroom & see the icky toilet...no matter how clean it is...w/the seat up...ewww. My hubby has suddenly 'forgotten' how to put the lid AND the seat down...after 21 yrs, you'd think he'd not forget that simple request. But alas I now hafta remind him apparantly. For one thing...we have a cat & I do NOT wanna hafta chase it down & give it a bath...not to mention, clean up the possible wet mess she left behind running outta there...b/c she decided to jump on the toilet only to find the seat and/or lid up & get down in the water...double ewww! but yes, it definitly looks a LOT cleaner & neater/more tidy to see the lid down!!! My mom, however, along w/other friends/relatives leave their's up. I think I just started putting it down when I got a house cat but then I preferred the way it looked w/the lid down. Total yes on this.

couldn't agree more....I can't stand the look of a bathroom with the lid up. Plus I read somewhere when you flush it sends up all the bacteria in the air, so I feel like if the lid is left up all the time...what kind of bacteria is floating around the room. Grossed me out enough that I put the lid down before flushing, and keep all things off the sink now. I used to keep the toothbrushes on the sink...but ewwww...now they're tucked safely in a toothbrush holder behind the mirror.

I like the seat down and the lid up. Then its ready for me when I want it. But I also dont like the lid down and getting there and lifting the lid to find it full of glowing yelllow with "snakes" floating around and then having to stand cross legged waiting for it to finish flushing before I can go. If the lid is up can see it everytime I walk past and can take care of the problem before I make my trip in.
