Hi all. I havea dilema with my bathroon ceiling. I have a problem with mildew growing above the shower and even a harder time getting it removed. I have tried bleach (which I am allergic to) and it still left stains. My partner is over 6ft tall and I know this is a cause of this and he doesnt use the fan bec he showers so early in the morning. Any ideas on what I can do to get this off my ceiling safely and without having to repaint?

What can I do next?

There are many products you could use but all are just masking the problem. My husband does drywall for a living and once mold gets in the sheet roc you have to tear it out and replace it as it will not go away but it is likly to spread and get into the incolation as well. Mold is very bad for your health and needs to be taken care of. Running the fan or opening a window helps keep the mold from growing. Your hubby not wanting to make noise is understandable but when you weigh the cost the noise is worth it in the long run. I hope this helps. I don't mean to be rude or mean by this comment. Just want you to know the truth. We had this same problem and it didnt go away till we replace the sheet roc and after my family stoped being sick so much.

we got a mildew/mold/moss remover from costco, www.wetandforgetit.com. it's supposed to be environmentally friendly however the bottle says it's not allowed in CA, so i wonder.

anyway, it worked pretty well on our mossy gate and concrete.

KILZ may work. We found that the mold had already gone into the sheetrock, so in our case, out came the sheetrock and we put in some new. Another suggestion is putting in a fan that is attached to the light switch, that way hubby turns on fan when he turns on the light. We had our contractor put in a timer so that the fan goes off after 60 minutes. That way we can vacate the bathroom and know the fan will run long enough to take care of moisture and shut itself off.

Hi J.,

The best cleaner in the world that i have found to remove black mold, and everything else that's yucky and dirty .... it is anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-infectious - comes from the company, Young Living Essential Oils.

It is called Thieves Household Cleaner. Use it once and you will never want to be without it again! Thieves Household Cleaner is a concentrate that you can use in every room in your house and never worry about your health or the health of your children - nothing abrasive and no harsh chemicals.

Use my I.D. number to order: 911219
Customer order #: 1-800-371-3515
Retail is just under $30 / Pref. Cust just under $25 - as a concentrate, it will last for many many months. You can dilute it in a spray bottle for your shower. I use it everywhere and it makes everything smell so fresh and clean.

Black mold is deadly. I encourage you to get it out of your house as quickly as you can.

Best wishes,
A. Wright

I know that you said you didn't want to repaint, but there is this stuff that is called Killz and it kills the mold and doesn't let it come back. We had a huge problem in one of our bathrooms. Good luck.

Maybe try encasing your shower ceiling and surrounding drywall with Cedar (you can by it for closets and such), my dad used that when we were growing up...never had a mold problem...we to have very tall men in our family...plus it is beautiful and smells great!

I've had that issue by running a humidifier in my son's room. I have been able to get the mold off by bleach water in a spray bottle, but the smell was atrocious. I would have to agree that using the primer Killz is probably what you need-you just paint it on and it kills any mold/mildew, then you can paint over that. I HATE painting, but have had to use it in a previous bathroom and just had to keep reminding myself it wasn't going to be a "fun" chore, but I also didn't want anybody in the family exposed to the mold. Good luck!

I would ask your partner to clean it and then maybe he might use the fan to keep it from coming back. As for getting it off in the first place try 30-35% hydrogen peroxide in a 50-50 mix with water in a spray bottle. Spray it on wait an hour and then spray again, no rinsing. If mold remains then wait 2 days and repeat.
