Bathing Suit Question... JFF

If you saw someone at the beach or public pool wearing a vintage style, pin up girl type bikini (high waist bottom), what would you think?

Also, what's your favorite type/style bathing suit? How much money are you willing to spend on a bathing suit for yourself?

Do you buy a few el-cheapo suits and hope for the best, or do you splurge on one, well fitting suit?

What is the most awful bathing suit you've ever seen? (Like, guys should never, ever wear a speedo unless you're an olympic swimmer, and don't even get me started on the 'mankini'... you've seen Borat, right?! Or was it the other movie with Sasha Baran Cohen? Whatever, guys, don't wear that... ever...)

What can I do next?

I was wearing cheap ones for years, and finally got one this year that set me back about $100, but I feel fabulous in it and know for my chunky self that I don't look HORRIBLE. Though after my trip to Va Beach, I would have fit right in with a string bikini!! Some people have no idea! LOL. But I would rather get one really good one and hope I get a couple of seasons out of it :).

I probably wouldn't think *anything* other than "that's cute" or "that's not cute".
I like a tankini best for me (I'm 47!) and usually order from Land's End. They last and last. I will spend $80-100 for a suit I like.
I can't think of a specific suit that I would say was "awful" but I really don't like to see the glammed up, large jewelry wearing, fully made-up with kitten heels types probably the most at the pool/beach.

And Speedos.

Anywhere but the Olympics.

well, if I was wearing it - my husband must not be around.... :) as he sees me as his pin up girl - curves in all the right places!!!

i would rather spend the money on a suit that I like and feel comfortable in rather than some cheap thing that will fall apart....and to keep up with style? Sorry - not with my curves....I don't do bikinis and haven't for years!!!

OH MY!!! Speedos are nasty!! NASTY!!! NASTY!!! I was a swimmer in HS and college and hated them then too!! i really like that they have the Speedo shorts now...whew!!!

I would LOVE to be able to spend $ on a good suit, but I always think of a 100 different things I could spend the $ on. I usually end up in a shorts and a tank anyways. Since having kids I haven't found a good suit yet that perks up the boobs, covers the rear end, and sucks in the belly for ya.

I love the old vintage style suits. They are glamorous to me.

Bad suits - when girls (and I mean 10 years on up) get these skimpy bikinis and think they are showing something good off! umm.. hello! you are just a girl!!! Makes me so mad.

I would very likely ask her where she bought it! I bought a one-piece pin-up style at Target for the summer and have gotten compliments every time I wear it.

When I was living in the South, swim suits were not as "seasonal" as they are now, so I didn't really put a limit on them. In FL, suits are year-round and we all had tons of them. Now that I live in NY (bleh), I have to "good suits" ($50-$60) and two cheapos from Old Navy ($20) that I wear for my son's swim lessons. The chlorine destroys them!

Most horrible bathing suit I have ever seen... man in a rainbow thong on South Beach. Yes, I am aware that this is pretty standard atttire for Miami, but there's no possible way that man was sporting his natural "tan" or his "endowment"- couldn't help but stare!

I love pin up style swimsuits! Have you checked out www.pinupgirlclothing.com ?

I splurge on a great suit, but I always check clearance racks for a spare. I found my favorite suit on a rack at Target. I was so excited!

The most awful bathing suit I have ever seen was one that I wore in the 3rd grade. It was made of orange chenille. Why, God, WHY?????? :)

I splurge on a bathing suit every year or two. I'm large chested and the cheapos just don't fit me. So, I get a bra size specific bathing suit (usually between $125-150) and look and feel so much better.

LMAO!!!

Yah, I like the vintage bikini style, but it certainly doesn't look good on me.

I have a one piece that has a vintage feel, but has a high cut around the bum and thighs, rather than boy brief sort of deal. More flattering for my shape.

I get my swim suits cheap when I'm visiting my dad. Thrift shops in Hawaii are the jam. I've found nice, NEW swimsuits for five bucks. I spent thirty on the one piece (I wear it to the pool). Bikinis I'll spend a five-ten bucks.

As to style: My boobs are small and saggy, my bum is...a little saggy, but my tummy is flippin' flat and muscular so I don't mind showing it off a bit!

I love this swimsuit, but alas, it's also out of my price range. http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/swim/patternsandprin...

I rarely by at the bieggining of summer. I will use cheap or nicer, but almost always by mine at the end of the summer. Oh who am I kidding I rarely buy suits, my husband buys them for me and get super duper deals at the end of the season or in off season. I did have to go by a one peice the begining of this summer because I gained to much weight for my skimpies. It was the first one I purchased in years.

I would rather spend 50 or 60 bucks on a good/great suit for myself and will actually probably order another one similar to the one i got this year so i have an extra for next year. I get the tankini and boy shorts i feel more comfortable in it then a bikini top and boyshorts I love it

I'd think the vintage suit was cute and I prefer one piece bathing suits or tankinis for everyone. Bikinis are generally too likely to fall off, show way too much skin and be too much a distraction to too many people. If you want to swim, build sand castles with your children, play beach volleyball etc - dress the part - don't dress like a desperate woman looking for attention from the opposite sex.

I will get moderately priced suits that fit my shape nicely and have the bold colors I prefer. Same with my daughter - she's got some beautiful one piece bathing suits!

I have the vintage bikinis :D
and a cute itty bitty string bikini
It depends on body type/age what I think people should wear.
I get frustraited with parents who think its "cute" to have their 10-11 year olds in bikinis. When they're babies/toddlers it doesn't bother me but I just get bother when kids do. I wore thick strapped full covering 2 pieces untill I was 16, then I got my first little string bikini.
To each their own though, not my place to raise another's child.
and I get annoyed with grossly overweight (I'm not talking muffintop over your jeans, I'm talking rolls and such) women wear bikinis. It bothers me to no end, but I do give them props for feeling good enough about themselves to do so.

I love the retro styles, but I think you have to be a special shape to pull off a bikini with the big bottoms! This year I bought three new one-piece swimsuits and five mini swim minis to wear over them when I'm feeling more adventurous. I swim a lot, so the money is worth it. It is also definitely worth buying online from overseas (Australia, NZ, Brazil, you know, southern hemisphere) in their end of summer sales as the US is heading into summer. Great bargains!

The vintage suits look great!
I like a one piece or full coverage tankini.
Lands End usually has something that looks good on me.
Worst looking suits?
Thongs.
Sorry - I don't care how buff your bod is (and most are SO NOT) I'm not interested in viewing how burned your bum is.
Bikinis are also awful - most stuff themselves into something 3 sizes too small and think they look cute when they look like over stuffed sausages.
A lot of people belong in Muu Muus - they'd look better and feel way more comfortable than squishing the fat out around suits/clothes that are way too small for them.
