Basement Help

Does anyone have any ideas on how to childproof cement pillars/poles in a basement? We are getting ready to put carpet in the basement and it will be for half entertainment and half play room. I can just see my 2 year old running right into one of the poles and getting a concusion. How do I pad them to protect him? Thank you

What can I do next?

Hi there,

I taped industrial gym mats that I bought at a fitness store; i.e. Fitness Warehouse, Fitness Experience. It's been 5 years, and it's held up great!

Good luck.

I would carpet them or as a previous post suggested, build a little table around them. But then of course if they are crawling underneath that might pose a problem.

I have seen people litereally carry the carpeting up and around the poles. I am not sure how they do it (I wonder if you could even add the carpet pad...) but you could probably ask the people who are installing the carpet. You would just need to buy extra.

I have seen them carpeted.

They have cushion wraps for pillars. I know my Dad just had them put on his pillars when he had his carpet laid.

I have seen people wrap mats around them. Did you ask at the hardware store?

My daughter's preschool had that problem. I think a dad who does plumbing covered them with the dark gray foam that is used to cover/insulate hot water pipes. I don't know what he did to attach it, maybe duck tape!

E. ,

I had the same problem with my sons , my husband and I tried pipe wrap and it worked fpr a short time but then my son figured out it came a part if he picked at it. We ended up taking the wrap off and I can say they have not hit thier heads at all . Head to your local hardware store and ask them for some ideas.

Good luck !!
