Baptismal Gift Ideas

I am going to be a godparent for my niece, and I am hoping to get some ideas for a great unique thoughtful gift. I am not into the engraved pictures, crosses, ect...
The godparent of my son opened a bank account with some cash in it for him and I would hate to do the same because that is the same couple that I will now be their child's godparent. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I found two great gifts I would like to share to others who may be in this same predicament. Both went over VERY well and were a bit different from all the typical gifts out there. The first is a personalized wooden cube/baptism block. Here is a link for a better description and pictures of it- http://www.craftefamily.com/craft/block_baptism.asp

The second is another great gift; it is a shadow bock with 3D hand and footprints of the child (that you mold yourself) Here is the link. http://www.castingkeepsakes.com/shadow-box-kits-c-6.html
Thank you all for your great responses and willingness to help me out. Greatly appreciated!

Maybe a savings bond. Kinda the same thing as cash, but they can't get the money until they're 18. They double in value over that time. Ex: you would pay $25 now for a $50 bond. Just have to hold on to the certificate.....
My son got a neat personalized piggy bank, which we thought was a great gift.
Good luck!

a great gift is a set of coins from the bank that have never been used. you can get several different sets of coins. my son has a few different ones from the year he was born and the year he turned five. or another idea would be a pearl necklace that each year you add a pearl to the necklace. a friend of mine had that done and had a beautiful pearl necklace later in life!!!

I was very excited to get this question, because we received a wonderful gift that will really be something that our son will be able to cherish his entire life. We received this small wooden block that was inscribed with his name and date of birth and other information. It is very sweet. You can find them at www.craftefamily.com. Very affordable. I hope this helps.

One of the best gifts my children received were personalized blankets. You can usually get them where you would get the engraved frames but they have girls or boys patterns and you can have it embroydered with whatever you want. So you could add the child's name and birthdate or a short prayer. These blankets can either be used or hung on the wall so they are great to have around.

HI-
Congrats on being chosen for such a special duty!

My husband and I were just chosen to be godparents as well. We're not into the things you mentioned either. What we did was get the child a US Savings Bond. You can go to any bank and get one, however you will need a social security number (either the childs or yours). THe nice thing about a savings bond is that you only pay HALF of the face value of the bond and if left alone long enough can eventually mature to be worth more than face value!

Good LUck.

My daughter was just baptized about 3 months ago and we received a variety of gifts. Some were religious, some were not, not sure which direction you want to go. But she received:

Childrens picture books that were religious (like the story of Noah's Ark, Bedtime prayers for children, etc)

My First Bible that also has several pages in the beginning to fill things out like family tree information.

Fisher Price makes a Noah's Ark toy that is a plastic ark and all the animals - she really likes playing with the animals.

A personalized piggy bank.

Savings bonds.

A few people bought her new clothes and outfits.

My son received books that were religious. The person who bought it put a little special prayer and dated it to make it more personalized.

What about a gift certificate and membership to a photographer to help capture the baby growing up. I personally like the Picture People because they are good with babies and kids and have all kinds of props.
