Bad Texas Allergies

So my little 10 month old is fine and dandy during the day but the moment his head hits the pillow I can hear the congestion in the back of his nose........maybe a little bit in the chest today but up until today it was only in the back of throat like drainage sound.....no runny nose....I use the aspirator suction thingy twice a day (morning and bedtime) but hardly anything come out though the saline drops do make him feel better. He has a humidifier in his room. I also rub vicks on his chest, back and feet and put socks on him..also sprinkle a little eucalyptus oil on a wash cloth and leave in the room. Took him to his dr and she said to give 2.5 ml of zyrtec once a day. It has been six weeks and still the same problem ( she has seen him twice in these 6 weeks) so I called her again and she has now put him on singulair in the monring to be mixed with food and then zyrtec in the evening....he is so happy/comfortable during the day ( I think since he is not cranky) that is breaks my heart to hear such labored breathing at night and then he gets in this crouching position and sometmes wakes up crying since he can't breathe.....does anyone have any suggestions on making him more comfortable at night and dealing with this congestion issue??? please please let me know since I am really at my wits end with this!!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you Thank you for all your responses. I truly appreciate the input. I have some awesome ideas to discuss with his dr..............I am thinking that I will look into getting an air purifier for his room, vacuum using a hypoallergenic cleaner and make sure all stuffed toys, blankets etc are clean. We don't use a pillow for him to sleep on but I do use one when giving him his bottle so his head is allevated a bit. I also think our humidifier makes his room way tooo humid like if the door is closed and I walk in it feels like a rain forest so I am going to start cracking the door a bit at night and possibly get something to check the humidity levels in the room.
You guys ROCK!!!!

Go to Whole Foods and see if they have homeopathic drops to prevent allergies for the area you could give the baby. I've heard that can be helpful, but I have not tried it myself. I take alfalfa root tablets and it helps a great deal. You might be able to ground them and give them to the baby. It's basically a vegetable.

FIRST check with your pedi before you try it but...........

we have TX allergies bad. We've found the local bee pollen helps a lot. My daughter just sprinkles a tiny bit (not even 1/2 teaspoon) on her cereal. I was amazed at how fast we started clearing up.

A lody at Market Street told me about it. We drove way out in the country around Fairview and bought the pollen.

can you give him some infant benadryl right before bedtime? That would dry up the ickyness also and maybe help him sleep.

All of my kids have bad allergies. My son was hit the hardest. Get some thick books (I used phone books) and place them between the mattress and the springs on his crib to prop up his head.

Keep up the humidifier but make sure you change the filters once a month. Gunk will build up and make things worse. And our pediatrician does not recommend Vicks, especially at this age. It can actually make the lungs work harder.

I hope this helps.

Try to find a chiropractor who is able to give natural supps and can adjust your child.

I think the vicks (is it the baby one or the regular?) and the eucalyptus oil may be too much and not be helping with what you want. I would think they would suppress a cough, not act as a nasal decongestant. Ask your pedi if there is a decongestant that can be given with the antihistamine (zyrtec). I only use a humidifier if the outside humidity is really low or the heater is on because it can cause mold. I live in Houston so we get the double whammy of pollen and pollution. We have the same allergies, so I know your pain :( My husband and I take allegra and the kids take zyrtec. It helps us all a ton.

You've gotten great suggestions, but I thought I'd add that my understanding is that ragweed allergies are actually worse at night when the pollen spores settle in the nose and the back of the throat. I know that's true for me!

I'm late do this, and I don't know if it's been mentioned, but have your ped check his tonsils - if his tonsils are large, it would be causing the same problem. Both my kids had to have theirs removed for breathing problems at night that antihistimes didn't help for. I'm sorry you're going through this, I know it's a rough situation. I hope you find a solution that works!
