Yes, honey, it does sound like he could have a bacterial or yeast related problem. Has he had any digestive upset? Organic yogurt could really help out by raising his probiotic level. I'm sure that brushing is fine, but when you do start using toothpaste, please use fluoride-free, as the fluoride is toxic. Hmmm....has he had any health issues lately, or been on any medications or antibiotics lately? Sometimes a little bit of dandelion root or grapeseed extract in the yogurt or in some applesauce can make a big difference. Something else that our family is using (though I caution--I haven't tried it on an infant. Our six year old all the way up through mid seventies grandpa have used it with great results, though) is food grade hydrogen peroxide. You might check out earthclinic.com.

Hmmm...did you mention that you give him nuts? He's probably much too young to chew nuts...do you grind them? he could have a little bit of a nut stuck somewhere in his mouth decaying and causing the odor. I'd check for an abcess or wound. Also, an allergy to something, like possibly nuts, can cause a really bad odor from the digestion. Babies are really programmed to operate on dairy--admittedly dairy from mama,--but organic goats milk is a helpful substitute and more easily digested than veggie or nut based "milks"

Hope some or any of this helps, feel free to contact me if you like,

Best wishes and blessings

I recently asked my dentist that question. he said generally it doesn't have much to do with teeth and everything to do with tonsils and throat. Have his tonsils checked out.

do you give him probiotics? has he had antibiotics that would have killed his friendly bacteria? sometimes ( if this has only been going on for a week or so) it could be that he is getting sick, but if its continuous id try probiotics and maybe get docs opinion to be sure.

If it's still there tomorrow... I'd say it's time for the doctor or dentist.

Strep smells foul + COPPERY... and there are usually white pustules in the back of the throat... an abscess just smells foul. Thrush and yeast both smell strange, but not actually "bad" per se. Dehydration will also cause bad breath, and is actually the number one cause of bad breath/halitosis.

The dentists I know all swear that the only purpose toothpaste serves is to keep people brushing longer... that it's the actually physical motion of the brush which cleans everything... UNLESS one uses an oxygenated toothpaste, since most of the pathogenic bacteria in the mouth are anaerobic the O2 kills them... but toothpaste just covers up smells and keeps people brushing at least 1/2 as long as they should... which is better than 1/10th as long as they should.

That said... all the brushing in the world won't help bad teeth. My husband's family has to pretty much extract the baby teeth as they cut, because they start rotting almost instantly. Their family don't produce enough dentin, so their teeth are "mushy" (not really, just in comparison to baby teeth with a normal amount of dentin). Their adult teeth are fine, but the baby teeth don't make it longer than 6-12 months past eruption. It's NOTHING they're doing wrong, just a genetic quirk.

Brush his teeth with fluoride free toothpaste made for babies/toddlers. I brush my toddler's teeth 2 to 3 times a day depending on what has been eaten and I lightly floss between the teeth. Also, its never too early to start dental visits; most pediatric dentists suggest light cleanings once teeth begin to come in.

Try brushing more with the toddler toothpaste and see a pediatric dentist.
Don't worry; he'll be alright and you'll get it handled.

Have him see his doctor. Some people, even kids, can produce "tonsiliths" which are little "stones" that are in the pits of the tonsils...usually made up of bacteria, white cells, etc. and they STINK! Sometimes they can cough them up and they look like little balls. Or it could be an infection or GI issues. Toddler breath shouldn't be very stinky yet.
