I have a horrible, dry, uncontrollable cough going on 9 days now. I am 37 weeks pregnant. Primary doc and OB said it is ok to take Robitussin DM, so I have been faithfully taking it every 4 hours as directed. It is not helping. I am miserable and I think I have finally pulled a muscle (or something) in the side of my belly from all the coughing. (Not to mention, almost peeing my pants every time I cough, LOL) I am wroking on my second bag of cough drops since thursday of last week, YUCK! Any Suggestions?

What can I do next?

I am so sorry you are going through this I had this issue with my second, I got a cold 6 weeks before I was due it involved a bad cough, I couldn't get rid of it, I pee'd every time I had a coughing episode, so embarissing...lol I tore muscle right below my left breast and broke a rib with the couch. I got over the cold quick but had issues with not enough room and hard to breath just because of the pregnancy which made the cough not go away. Using a nebulizer helped a bit for me but sadly it was never ending until I delivered and then it was gone in a flash. i guess what I am getting at is no meds would help me, just saline in a nebulizer would calm me down when the cough would get bad, it was like I was caughing because I couldn't breath. The good new is you are almost done!!

Whooping cough (pertussis) is making its rounds again, which is annoying but not dangerous for adults. It can be serious for little ones, though. In adults, it's a dry hacking cough that goes unsoothed with typical cough syrups and drops. It isn't in the throat or deep in the lungs, but rather feels like it's at the top of your lungs - where both sides would meet together.

It causes coughing spells that hurt the chest and can go on for about a minute. Once you know you have it, there isn't any treatment, but you should still get an antibiotic to prevent spreading it to others. The Chinese call whooping cough the 100 day cough - because that's about how long it takes for your body to overcome it.

Most people were vaccinated against it as children, but the vaccine only lasts 10 years, so as adults, we're susceptible again. I caught it from a student about 5 years ago and read up about it. About 3 months later, I was finally over it.

If you think this could be it, protect yourself before that baby comes.

When I was pregnant with my first (40 weeks), I had bronchitis. They gave me a Z-Pack. It's safe to take while you're pregnant. I'd ask about that. One reason they might not give it to you is if they think you have a viral infection instead of bacterial.

Also, you might ask if Delsym is allowed to be taken while you're pregnant. It's a good cough medicine and you only have to take it ever 12 hours.

Oh, you can also drink tea with warm honey. Supposed to help with coughs.

I used to keep hydrated and take a spoonful of honey :) Also, the alcohol free Ludens or whatever cough drops that just have pectin in them. Worked the best for me. No meds. I had 2 babies 15 mos apart and breastfed the 2nd for a year so I basically went like 4 years and didn't take any cough or cold medicines despite having the FLU (yeah really influenza), colds, and allergies! Good luck and many blessings!

I would get a second opinion. You could have pluresy (sp?) which feels like a pulled muscle but is much more serious. It is your lung inflamed and rubbing on the back of your rib - hurts like crazy and coughing only exacerbates it. I'd ask your OB again...

I was at the health food store yesterday, and just saw an all natural cough 'controller' (not medicine) made with mostly honey. I'm pretty sure i saw it on the shelf at Target too...in the children's cold remedy aisle. Perhaps you can go that route? I can't recall the name of it, but it's produced by a company that only does all natural products. You couldn't miss it! Hope you get better soon, you poor thing!

Call your OB again and see if there is anything else you can use... I usually end up with an inhaler to help with inflamation but I am not sure if it would be ok for you during pregnancy... But no matter what... call the dr... actually... your gonna probibly see them again in a few days anyways... so talk to them about it... A tired, sore momma does not make for a happy delivery!!!

I'd REALLY ask your docs again and tell them everything you included here. Taking so much meds can't be good over long periods of time. There may not be anything you can do, it just might have to "wear" off. But still, I'd recommend at least letting your docs know what's going on.

Good luck and feel better SOON!! ls

I'm 32 weeks and having the same issue. A humidifier is helping and my ob prescribed a cough syrup with Phenigran and Codine so I could get some sleep. I'm not a medication person, but on the nights it's been uncontrollable, it's helped.

Just commenting on the person who mentioned pluresy...I had that a few years ago and it is EXTREMELY painful. I thought I was having a heart attack b/c it hurt so bad. You've probably pulled a muscle b/c of what your body is going through. Still, it never hurts to go back if you're experiencing discomfort and the symptoms aren't going away.

I'd call your dr and you might ask about Musinex. Not the Musinex-D, but my dr let me take the musinex while pregnant during those rough allergy times. Also, straight benedryl.

But you should really call the dr, you don't need the stress of not getting rest from the coughing, this close to having your little one. Lord knows you won't get any rest then lol.

Good luck and grats on the baby :)

Sounds like maybe an allergy from Autumn setting in..... ask your doc about a safe allergy medicine to try. Keeping yourself hydrated is very important and honey is one of the best throat soothers out there, get some local honey as it is also said to help with allergies from local pollens. It sucks to cough when your are pregnant and worse after delivery when you are all sore.... I caught a cold right after delivering my first son and I could have sworn I was ripping my stiches out with each cough... so I hope you nip it in the bud before your due date. Good luck.

It sounds like you have more that just a cough. I would get back to your PCP and have them check for bronchitis like PP said.
I also second the person that said put vicks on your feet and then socks. It really does work. My whole family has done it...my DH thought I was nuts when I told him to do it.
Good luck and congrats on the new little one coming soon!

I had a persistent cough left over from colds/flu with my first and second pregnancy ... it was horribly annoying, so I feel for you. My doctor did prescribe me some cough pills with my second pregnancy, they work wonders ... especially since I couldn't keep food down with all the coughing I was doing. Not sure of the official name of the pills but they are little and yellow (almost see through) pills, obviously filled with some liquid ... it relaxes your throat muscles. Good Luck!

Also check to make sure you do not have pertussis. Do you a vaporizer going too? Stay hydrogenated too. Good Luck!
