I have BAD BREATH and it is becoming extremely bothersome to me...I am not sure what else to do, anyone have any advice to offer? I brush twice a day, floss, brush sometimes mid day, get my yearly cleanings. I don't have any pain or excessive redness to my gums. Anyone with some additional ideas? Dental Professionals? HELP!
P.S. I don't have any tonsils!

What can I do next?

Has it recently become this way or is it more of long term issue? When was the last time you went to the dentist?

Here's my two cents :)

If it's new, then follow the advice of brushing the tongue and if you are having sinus issues that may be why.

Maybe a trip to the dentist if you haven't been in a while.

I am 43, drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day and tea or Dr. Pepper at lunch - this is what worked for me, I swear by it:
-sonicare toothbrush (the least expensive model works just fine - no need for all the bells &whistles)
-waterpik
-brush with hydrogen peroxide & baking soda
-use a fluoride toothpaste or rinse a couple of times a week to get the fluoride you need

If you don't want to brush w/ hydrogen peroxide & baking soda, just rinse with the peroxide. It's weird at first but it's easy to get used too and well worth the results. I did this and I do not have bad breath anymore. Before I did this, I didn't have any pain or redness either but I did have the beginnings of gum disease. I changed dentists and my new dentist says there is no evidence gum disease. My dentist also told me that whatever I am doing, I should continue doing it, because it's working.

I hate bad breath. Good luck on whatever you end up trying!!

My dentist recommends a cleaning every 6 months. How much water do you drink? Dry mouth can cause bad breath. Also, maybe it's something in your diet (garlic, onion, etc)? I'm also a fan of the tongue scraper.

Do you brush your tongue? I use a tongue scraper twice a day, and brush my tongue every time. It seriously helps.

Investigate the rest of your body for health issues. For instance, diabetes can cause bad breath.

Hi A.!

You've been given some great suggestions (Hydrogen Peroxide, Tongue Scraper). Those suggestions deal with the symptoms from the problem which can help in the short term, but they do not address the roots of the problem which will help you in the long run. There were some good "roots of the problem" suggestions for you to investigate (allergies, diabetes). You may also want to look at excessive yeast (Candida) overgrowth in your body due to diet, stress, antibiotic use...there may be other possible roots of the problem which I am unaware of so I encourage you to seek out all the possible root problems and go from there to determine which one(s) could be causing the bad breath and help you find long term solutions!

It takes courage asking a question like this because none of us want to have bad breath and none of us want to tell other people about it either!

God's Grace to you,

Lisa :)

how's your tonsils? Mine are toxic. Makes the dr jump back in shock every time she sees them. :)

They are the root of my bad breath, but so is my pre-diabetes.

Good Luck!

As a dental hygienist I can tell you if you do not have periodontal disease (gum disease) bad breath comes from the tongue! You need to get a tongue scrapper not just brush it. Brushing your tongue is kind of like using a broom to sweep a carpet. Some people have longer "hairs" on their tongues than others and it traps food and plaque more than others. Breath RX makes the best tongue scrapper on the market.. It is plastic (NO METAL) with ridges (two sizes large and small). Brush floss and then lean over the sink stick out tongue as far as you can and from back to front "drag" tongue scrapper down using whichever side you need either large of small. Rinse it off and repeat. You don't need to scrap your tongue a 100 times just enough to cover area of tongue. 3-4 times should do it. Rinse tongue scrapper off and store upright like your toothbrush. Every so often I will alcohol mine off. They also sell a tongue gel that rocks! You will be amazed at all of the particles trapped on your tongue. You might gag until you get used to it. Make sure and breath through your nose. Please try this it will work.

Are you having any sinus issues or a mild scratchy/sore throat? If so, these could be related to the bad breath. A mild scratchy/sore throat plus bad breath can be caused by something called tonsil stones, which are not uncommon.

Here's an article that can explain it in more depth.

There are other medical conditions (not necessarily dental in nature) that can cause bad breath. I'd recommend getting a physical and talking to your doctor if you've eliminated all the dental issues as a possibility. Good luck!

You could have an infection. Do you have your tonsils? If so, they can be the culprit! Get a tongue cleaner, they really do work! Your tonsils don't have to be "infected" (like a sore throat) for them to be the problem. I knew a girl whose tonsils constantly developed pus pockets but she never had a sore throat when it happened. Talk to your dentist too.

My Dad used to eat a ton of onions and garlic all the time and always took breath assure. I don't even know if they still sell that, it was over 10 years ago. Worth a try to look for it.

I was going to suggest a tongue scraper too, but someone beat me to it. lol
Also, if you have any kind of sinus issue going on, the drainage can contribute to noxious breath. And allergy season (and the accompanying sinus issues) is in full swing.
