Back of Hands, Especially the Knuckles, Have Red Rash and Bleed After Basketball
My son plays basketball and after practice or a game has a red type rash on the back of his hands. It is especially present on the knuckle area. At times it is so bad it can bleed. It almost seems like a friction burn or something. We put Vasoline on them and that seems to help somewhat. Any ideas or the cause or has anyone else experienced this?

Sounds exactly like what my 5yo gets, but only on days when he is at his half-day preschool. I'm pretty sure it's the soap they use. Maybe something similar going on at basketball? (soap in the locker room? laundry detergent in the towels?)

I agree this is excema. Do not let him wash his hands in antibacterial soap or detergent!

Sounds like dry, chapped skin. Have him use gentler soaps and keep cream on them. As winter ends, it should get better. I see this in our prechool, as the kids have to wash their hands all the time.

Hi there.
Yes, it sounds like excema to me too. My kids had rounds of that. Try a non petroleum products to heal it up. Vasoline coats the skin, but it may not heal it all up underneath. Also, no strong and scented soaps. If you want more information on some products, I have a a business with Arbonne International. I recommend the skin conditioning oil. It is in a little bottle and you use just a drop or two. it soaks in. I have used it on my 3 kids and even on my husbands hands.
If you want to know more, email me. Good luck. I akm sure with a few changes you will get his hands healed.

Hi My son is 18 now, and has had the same thing for a few years now. yes, it gets bad during basketball season, but this is simply because basketball is a winter sport, and that is when the skin is at it's dryest. It is dry skin/ excema. I have heard that the Eucerin products are good, but our dr. recommended Vanicream which is also very good. As the weather warms, you'll probably notice that it gets MUCH better or completely goes away until next year. Use moisturizing soaps too vs. the antibacterial. Good luck.

My son has this too. His doc said that it was very dry skin from the weather. We too use vasoline and put gloves on his hands at night. It helps over time. I am hopeful that the warmer/ nicer weather will help too! :)
Good luck. I know how bad it can look.
