We have received 6 (yes, six!!) announcements for Baccalaureate (Bachelors) Degrees (two of which are my nephews)...

what is the typical gift you send for this milestone in life?

For my nephews - I'm not sure - I wanted something more personalized...but am finding myself in a fog over what to make, do, etc.

What have you done for family and friends in the past?

What can I do next?

If I know them well, I'd aim for something to help with the next step in life. Maybe pots and pans to set up the first real home. Maybe hiking boots or a tent if exploring for a year. Maybe money to help pay off the loans. Maybe a shopping spree if one already has a job.

I usually do an Itunes or Visa gift card. Depending on the graduate.

Cash.

It's always the right color, size and fit. Granted with 6 I'd have to drop my normal $50 to $25 to be able to afford them all...

Good luck.

Hi Cheryl :)

My first thought usually goes towards money. Do they know what they want to do with their bright, shiny new degree?? You are in recruiting, what about books like :What Color is Your Parachute?"...something along those lines to get it closer figured out. Some $$$ to if you think it is appropriate.

Hi Cheryl O,

While cash is popular and important :) ...and always handy....if you want, I would also investigate meaningful books.

For instance, for someone who intends to write: A Dictionary or Thesauraus (yes you can go online, but I still love mine from 25 years ago!)..

For a scientist, there must be a good book by a recent Nobel Prize Winner. Ditto for an economist....

Or a good history book for a history major...

One other perhaps significant gift can be a beautiful picture frame, or an offer to laminate the graduation certificate.

Best, Jilly

I usually give something that represents their new "business" identity, depending on the degree they got and depending on how close we are. Some ideas: Monogrammed cuff links (classy look for job interviews); personalized stationary; briefcase. I don't have anyone in the family who went into medical professions, so I don't have any suggestions for those degrees.

Since the Bachelors Degree isn't the rite of passage that high school graduation is, a gift isn't always necessary. A card with a nice personal note to the person, expressing the wonderful future you see for him/her in their chosen profession, is often enough.

I've given cash or an appropriate book.

I gave my SD a large gift certificate to iTunes since she was moving and didn't want to have more "things".

I would say it depends on how close you are to each one and your budget. Gift cards for those you aren't as close to or even just a card. For the nephews or close friends I would put more thought into their chosen career paths. I really like the briefcase idea. Maybe a monogrammed one? A suit or ties might be boring but they will probably need them. Then again if I think back what I wanted most was CASH!! :)

Hi, Cheryl:

Having their announcement and their graduation picture put in a frame
so they can hang it next to their diploma. (a small picture)
Just a thought.

Normally we give cash. $50-$100 depending how "close" the graduate is to us. Basically the same as for high school grad parties. Probably more for our nieces & nephews.
