Babysitter Rate

I was wondering about babysitting rates ... we have a 4 month old son and was curious what the "going" rate is. The individual who would watch him would literally be sitting in the house while he sleeps as he goes to bed at 6:30pm and rarely wakes up before 2am. Thanks so much!!

We have someone watch our 13 month old daughter once or twice a week and we pay between $10-$11 an hour. If it's the weekend night, we pay a little extra. If you are going to be using a babysitter full-time (5 days a week), then I would think that around $50 a day would be good.

Hi M.- in the city the rate is $10-15 per hour. It looks like most of the posters are in agreement.

Good luck!

We always paid $12/hour for one baby...
I don't think it necessarily matters whether he's sleeping or not. I think generally the pay is the same. I don't pay less during the 2 hours my daughter & son nap during the day...

Hi, not sure where you live, but wanted to quick put my 2 cents in!!! I pay $5.00 an hour for one child and $6.00 and hour for my 6-year and 2-year old.... WOW, for people who are paying $15.00 an hour, I want a job working for you CASH! Whew.... That is more then some people make an hour...wow... I have a couple people that I use that are very dependable, reliable, etc., etc...
The best of luck to you to be able to go out on a date and still have an affordable night out... Note: the amount you pay does not constitute the care you get... They are going to be good or not, you just want one that you could trust. Word of mouth is good, or contact a high school/college/church in your area.

Take care,

I would say $10 or $11 an hour if it's an hourly thing. But, for a full day I pay $22 - $25 per day at a licensed home daycare.

Well even though it might be an easy job as far as sitter jobs go, that person is still responsible for being present and aware of your child, and checking on him to be sure he is all right. And in the event that he does wake up at an unusual time (which kids often do when you least expect it), the sitter is totally responsible for caring for him while he is up. I pay about $13 an hour for sitting.

Also consider that while the job might not require much interaction on the part of the sitter, that person is still dedicating their time to be there instead of doing something else with their night. Also I feel that paying well (or at least competitive) facilitates more availability of the sitter for future dates. No sitter is going to fall over themselves to come back and sit for you if you pay a bargain rate.

Regardless if the baby is sleeping or not, the pay (especially for weekend evenings) should be in the $10 an hour and UP - range. If you have some 13/14 year old come and "house sit" with your child there...then you can probably get away with giving them around $5-$8 an hour.

I babysit during the day, as a "job", and it doesn't make a difference if the child is sleeping or awake, the rate does not change. Having the child nap properly is actually a PART of the job!

I do charge $8 for babies and $10 for them as they reach their first birthday with me. But that is week day babysitting and a lot of "baby" naps included. It is also in my house, so it gives me some time to do my things while they sleep, versus being away from my house babysitting. That is why I charge a little less. (because I get to be home)

I know it makes that "movie night" difficult when you have to pay a sitter....but if you hire someone to give up their weekend evening to "sit" at YOUR house...pay should be at least $10 an hour.

$10-14/hr for an adult - slightly less for a teen but you probably don't want a teen minding a child that young. enjoy your time out :)

Hi M.
It does not matter if the little guy is sleeping or not, your paying the person for their time. I understand it sounds crazy because he is sleeping however it is their time/job. I would say between 13.00 - 15.00 per hour for one child.
Good Luck and have a nice evening out!!
