Baby with Rash - Salinas,CA

I have a 5 month old baby with a rash under her chin in the folds of her neck. It is really red and bumped up. I'm pretty sure it's from having a bib on her all the time. She is drooling like crazy and spits up a lot so I have to keep one on her and change it about 5-6 times a day. I heard using baby powder helps but then heard baby powder is not recommended anymore because it is dangerous for babies to inhale. I think the rash bothers her, what should I put on it if anything? What did any of you other moms out there do and what worked? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Aquaphor has been my answer for every random skin issue my daughter has had. But if you try that, or any of the other remedies listed below, and it doesn't get better in a few days, I would not hesitate to have the pediatrician take a look. Good luck!

Most likely a fungal rash from all the heat and moisture. wash and dry, and you can use apple cider vinegar on it, or even tea tree oil. Baking soda washes or espsom salt baths can also help. After that, i would put on a barrier ointment, like the other moms said. I liked A and D ointment with zinc oxide. They ddint have aquafer when my babies were around.

Fungal rashes like cornstarch- so definitely don't do that.

Plain cornstarch is a good alternative to baby powder for this and diaper rash too. It is completely harmless and cheap. :o) If keeping it dry with cornstarch doesn't clear it up in a few days, it may be yeast which would require a trip to the doc.

Aquaphor!!!!! I love aquaphor it even comes in baby aquaphor. Its a yeast rash from constantly being wet int the little folds. I would clean her up really good and put aquaphor on it a few times a day. It will create a barrier between her skin and all that spit up and slobber. I wouldn't do baby powder that close to her face. Give her a good old bath and lathe her up in some aquaphor and i bet she looks mostly better in the morning.

Gently wipe her neck with a wet washcloth a few times a day and dry it really well afterwards. You can also apply a bit of barrier cream (diaper cream or similar) and make sure the bibs are not to tight. My daughter had that too, they grow out of it as they grow into their skin.
Good luck.

my nephew had the same problem when he was a baby. my sister would rinse it with water and pat dry. she put diaper rash ointment afterwards but she let it air dry for at least 5-10 min.

When this was happening with my son I switched from the cute bibs to ones that had a plastic backing to he stayed drier. I also applied a thin layer of Aquafor over the rash to help it. Good luck!

We've had the same problem with our little boy, he's very fair skinned and got his first tooth at 3 months old and the little bumps started and to this day they come and go. Our doctor recommended Cortizone 10 cream and it works 100% of the time, we just get lazy, busy and forget to put it on until we see the bumps again at bath time. So until he stops drooling, the chaffing and bumps will come and go but do try the Cortizone, even the off brand works. Good luck.

you could just stop using the bib and see if it clears up. My son drools like crazy and has for many months. Some people make comments that his shirt is wet and I should use a bib. I just smile and ignore. I change his shirt a few times a day but I hate that bibs are so constricting on their delicate necks. I would definately ask at her next check up to make sure it is not more or maybe email the doctor.
Good luck!

As much as I'd love to offer help, I've learned from our pediatrician that all skin conditions are not easily diagnosed and treated. I'd highly recommend taking her into the office to make sure you're treating it appropriately.

If it is a yeast infection, it's fungal, and will need to be treated differently from eczema or dermatitis.

The advice to stay away from powder is consistent with the guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics because of their respiratory systems.

I'd at least call the pediatrician's office - they may be able to make a recommendation over the phone or may as you to come in for confirmation of cause before recommending a treatment.

You are right to be concerned. Make sure you aren't using a baby wash that has fragrance or mineral oil in it. These only aggravate the condition. Using barrier products with petroleum jelly or Vaseline aren't good either. I use botanically or organically based products that soothe with natural ingredients. Plus, even the detergent you are using to wash baby clothes in can have an effect too with the chemicals that in it. I would change to chemical free products. I use a great line and you can get all of your needs met online at one place. Let me know how I can help you.

I would just be careful putting the powder on her. Maybe put some in your hand in another room and then on baby, so the powder from the container doesn't fly up in the air and get into her lungs.
