My grandson started teething at 2 months. Tylenol and ibuprofen really didn't help. He will chew on teething rings sometimes. The tablets (they bought them at Walmart) have worked wonders for him. Every child is different but this has worked for son and dil

My mom would give us corn cobs that were cleared of the corn niblets. The cobs are perfect for holding, won't break and can be dipped in the water you cooked them in to keep them moist. Just remember: Don't salt the water! You can take a knife to them and 'shave' the niblets off. Try them warm or chilled.

Hyland's Teething Tablets!
They are a homeopathic remedy, they dissolve quickly in baby's mouth. They are about $5 for a pack (that lasted me through 2 kids & a neighbor)
I have seen them at Target & Wal Mart, if not, your local health food store will have them. Here is a link:

I would say yes, he is probably teething, especially if he never behaves like this. I have taken damp baby washcloths and frozen them and my older daughter loved to suck on them hen she was teething. My younger daughter who is just now getting her top front teeth, not so much. For her, adult-strength orajel was all that seemed to help, and even then, she just wasn't herself for over a week, + fever and diarhea and pulling at her ears. Then, poof, yesterday she cut that first top front tooth!
Just find what works for him, and be patient, he is in pain and can't help it. Hope this helps!

PS: Doctors don't know everything from my experience.

we tried a lot of "home" methods like the frozen washcloth, frozen waffles and frozen bagels, teething rings you put in the frige (she liked those a bit) - when she was in pain they really didn't help because she refused their coldness. She liked chewing on the "Soothie" pacifiers - the 3 months plus ones - they're hard but not too hard. She doesn't like to suck on pacifiers so she chewed them. To be honest, the best for her was tylenol or motrin. If she's really cranky and gnawing and especially when the tooth is just breaking through we give infant tylenol during the day and motrin just before bed. We find tylenol works faster but motrin lasts longer. Baby oregel that you swab on can work wonders in seconds, but the effects aren't long lasting. The homeopathic teething tablets did nothing for her. The sad truth about teething is, it's ongoing for about three years. The molars were the worst for my daughter but the early teeth weren't too bad once they broke through. It's the breaking through that hurts the most! at 6 months, your son could definitely be teething. I got my first tooth at 5 months and a friend of mine has a 6 month old with 3 teeth already! You won't know till you see swollen gums and that little greyish tranparent tip breaking through. They don't look white until they've broken all the way through. Good luck!

frozen apple slices or pear slices are good. Make sure there are no seeds or anything. I also got my son these things from Target called "mesh feeders" and it looks like a giant pacifier but instead of a rubber nipple, it has a little mesh bag. You can open the top and put frozen fruits or veggies in there and its awesome because it's numbing for teething plus they get the nutrients of the food without any small peices to choke on. Frozen bagles are good too

I'm not sure why the doc would say no- it's absolutely possible he is teething at this age. Did the dr say what else it COULD be? That just doesn't sound very helpful.
My son never chewed on anything- I don't know why. He would be completely miserable but wouldn't chew. A friend of mine would give her daughter a leather strap that someone had given her who worked with leather. It was really long and large enough not to be a choking hazard and it wasn't dyed or treated with anything, and she swore by it. My mom swears by the cold or frozen washcloth. I can't vouch for anything personally.
One thing my dr told me was that the Orajel stuff will actually make their gums tougher and thicker if you use it a lot, so teething is actually more difficult and takes longer. I just wanted to warn you about that.
As for the Melaleuca Oil, I love that stuff. But NO WAY would I have put it in my baby's mouth. It isn't meant to be swallowed, and it is really strong tasting. I have gargled with it when I had a really bad sore throat and it almost made me throw up, and that was like 2 drops in a cup full of water. Always ask your doctor before you give your baby anything, natural or not. Lots of things are natural, but if you aren't a hundred percent sure of what they are supposed to be used for or how safe they are, you shouldn't give them to an infant.

Your docotor just might be wrong. My son started teething at 4 months. The doctor said too early and the next week after the appt. his first tooth broke through. I never tried the wash cloth, but you can get some great soft teethers that have water in them that are shapped like dragon flys etc. and get that cold and it helps. We used baby oragel and I've had friends get the tablets from the health food store that is for teething that said it helps. Hope someone else has more ideas for you. If you think he is teething you are probably correct. I'm no expert, since I only have one, but I knew mine was teething and was right. Good Luck!
