Baby Teeth Extraction

My DD is turning 10 on Monday 8/18, and according to her orthodontist, two of her baby teeth are WAY behind schedule for shedding, which is causing one of her permanent teeth to come in behind the teeth in front of it. He recommends the dentist extract two of the baby teeth on our next visit. I just need to know what to expect with this procedure...will she be in much pain, and will she be able to go to school after the appointment or should I keep her home that day? BTW, those stubborn little baby teeth show no sign of being loose, and may not shed on their own for months, maybe a year according to the x-ray.

What can I do next?

I had almost all of my baby teeth pulled and remember it vividly, but not in a horrible way at all. Here's what my mom did for me:
- Told me to keep my eyes closed (I honestly never knew I was getting a numbing shot in my mouth or that the dentist used scary tools) and I listened to headphones
- Afterwards she got me icecream and I got to sit on the couch with new crayons and to watch TV and not go back to school
- Just remember no straws for a while!

My son had to have one of his front teeth pulled when he was 3. He had fallen when learning to walk and the nerve to the tooth had died. If it had been left in it could have damaged the permanent teeth, as it was basically dead and would have started to rot. We went to an oral surgeon to have it removed. The procedure itself went great, no problems at all. The bad part was when he was coming out of the medication at home. It was horrible. He didn't understand what was going on or why he couldn't feel his mouth. He couldn't communicate with me, because of the numbness and the "fog" in his head. He behaved very much like an autistic child having a tantrum. After about an hour of this "episode", he ran to his room and fell asleep half laying on his bed, half standing up. When he woke up the meds were out of his system enough that he was much better. I don't even remember him complaining of pain.

Now your daughter is much older, so I doubt she will have that type of reaction. She is old enough to understand what is happening, and will be able to communicate in other ways. I would defiantly plan on keeping her home that day. She will need time to "come out of the anesthesia" for one thing. She could also be a bit nauseous that day if any blood gets in her stomach. Depending on how much pain she is having, she should be fine to go to school the next day though.

Good luck to her. I'm sure all will go well.

My 7 year old son just had to have one baby tooth pulled for the same reason. The root on it was so long it was unbelievable; the dentist said it would have taken a long time for it to come out on it's own. It was a very easy procedure. Our dentist (Dr. Lisi in Allen) gave him some laughing gas, then a shot to numb the area and then just pulled the tooth out. He didn't feel any pain! The bleeding lasted about 10 minutes and he felt fine. The only thing he complained about was his mouth being numb and feeling big; that really bugged him for about 3-4 hours. Good luck!

My daughter had her remaining baby teeth removed at age 10 too. I'd let her stay home afterwards. My daughter was sleepy and it was kind of stressful. She had some adult teeth pulled at the same time because her mouth is so small there was no room for them. The procedure was easy though and we gave her whatever they told us to give her afterwards for pain and she was fine. Just sleepy.

Hi My 5 year old son had this same thing happen just a couple of months ago and I found out its called Sharks Teeth... when the perminate teeth come in before the baby teeth fall out...

We just left it alone and (the others I heard from did the same) and the perminate teeth loosen the baby teeth as they come in then the big teeth move into place once the baby teeth are out.

My son has his 2 big teeth on the bottom jaw in the middle already in behind the baby teeth. we have lost one baby tooth and the other is loose... in the space where the baby tooth was that fell out, the big tooth is already moving into that space.

I hear its common you might want to call around and get a second oppinion. I would not put my child thru anything traumatic if it was not dire nessesity...

They probably will numb her mouth, so it may be best to just keep her out of school for the rest of the day. You can get her work the day before to keep her from getting behind. It's just easier than trying to second guess how she will feel afterward.

It is really quite simple; there is not much root under a baby tooth so there is not much pain (just a little).

Best of luck.

Blessings,

Hi C.,

I have 6 sibs and we all had baby teeth issues. I had a couple baby teeth extracted when I was a kid, and I don't remember it being a problem at all. Not like when I had my wisdom teeth removed! My youngest brother is 11, and he had some baby teeth pulled recently. I think he didn't want to eat anything but soft food for a day, then he was back to normal. I'm pretty sure he took the rest of the day off from school, but went back the next.
