My friend's baby shower is at the end of August. I was not able to make it to her son's birthday party due to our finances, so I really feel like I need to attend. Can you guys give me some ideas on a gift that does not cost a lot of money, but is still special. She is having a boy and is due in October if that helps.
Also, do I need to bring a gift for her son, whose birthday was in July (the one we were not able to attend)?

MY FAVORITE Baby Shower Gift is The Magic Hanky. I received one of these when I was born from my Great Aunt, and did indeed carry it on my wedding day. I think it's a wonderful (and very inexpensive gift). For a boy, you do not have to use a lace lined hanky.

You can find detailed directions for making them here:
http://lace.lacefairy.com/Gallery/Hanki.html

It's quick and easy (only a bit of hand-stiched X's required) and well-appreciated for baby's baptism,
christening, or trip home from the hospital.

Hope this helps!

A small token gift for the boy is a great idea being that he will be the big brother and wont be getting any gifts at this party.

OK_ I just got a real adorable gift (diaper changing compant for wipes and diapers) for my friends dgt that had a baby and had it monogrammed- even if she hasnt had the baby so many people know the sex and name already -
A woman in Keller does embroidery on items there or anything you bring in - great work and affordable.

Maybe the specialty kits for babies first lock of hair or hand prints? or a manicure pedicure for mom when she is having those- oh I need a break moments after baby-
Better yet- I know of

I do offer gift certificates for a host assistant for showers-but for a 4 hr party it runs $120 for 1 angel. Something to think about for another time -
Have fun!

I received a really special gift from a childhood friend. It was a building block with six sides. One side was carved with my daughter's initial, side two was her parents name, side three was day and town she was born, side four was her full name, side five was the date, time, weight, and length, and the sixth side listed who gave her this gift. I really thought it was a great gift idea and she will have it always- it can be a paperweight on her desk later....

She bought it on www.craft-e-family.com and I think it was about $15.50 plus shipping. They also have some other cute affordable items on the website that might be appropriate for the four year old.

Good luck.

Anything personalized is great. Go buy a pack of cloth diapers (around $10 at Walmart or Target) for a dozen, then have them monogrammed to use as burp rags. Or even a plain pack of bibs or onesies will work too.

I love the diaper idea! you could also go to a craft store and buy 5 yards of fleece and make a no-sew blanket. I love to give these as presents. they're great for putting baby on top of for tummy time. if you're able to bring a gift for the son do so. You can find some inexpensive puzzles or games. Also, Learning Express has tons of cute stuff for under $10. It's my new favorite store for kids!!

I am agreement with diapers and also burp cloths! I can't tell you how many of those I needed to keep around the house and they're great after the spit up stages. The below website is a great place to purchase burp cloths. I know the owner and have used her products and they are durable!

Diapers are always a great gift! After my son was born, I didn't have to buy diapers for 2 months....the best gift ever! To makes it look cute, get a big plate and make the diapers look like a cake...just roll each diaper and tie a ribbon around it. It's really cute! And for the older son, there are all sorts of inexpensive gadgets and toys. Books are always good, since he probably has more toys than he needs.

I 2nd the diaper idea!!! I just had baby #2 on June 17th, and I have not had to buy diapers yet, and still have 3 large boxes left. You cannot go wrong w/diapers and wipes! Also, I would bring her older child a small gift! At my shower all my friends brought my 18 month little girl "BIG sister" gifts....go to the dollar store...you can get a few cute things for big brother there!! Also...Ross and Target always have really cute clothes on sale, and Ross has really cute baby picture frames for gifts too!! Good luck!

I thought this was really cute that someone did for me at my shower. They bought just plain white onesies and then tye dyed them. They turned out super cute.

I also got a couple of homemade blankets but that requires you knowing how to knit.

Hi Y.--The other moms gave great ideas. Even a little soft sleeper from Babies R Us can be found for around $10 to $15 or so. As for the little boy's gift, I am not sure of his age, but if he is under 6 or 7, you can find little gadgets for under $5 like silly putty, bubbles, nerf balls, etc. I am not saying you should feel obligated to get him a gift, but if you decide to, there are inexpensive choices out there that all kids would enjoy. Hope this helps. --C.
