Baby Pulls off When Nursing

My 4 month has always nursed quite well, but she has lately started to pull off and fuss while eating. She would usually go a 3 hour stretch between feedings and would sleep through the night. I know that my supply has gone down, but there is still enough there. I am working with lactation consultants to get my supply back up where it was. Even though I have less milk, I know that at least at the beginning of the feeding there is enough there, but many times the baby decides almost immediately to pull off, kick and fuss. I can see the milk in her mouth when she cries. Since I am trying to feed her more often to increase supply, my breasts aren't as full, could that be the reason baby is rejecting? What about teething, could that also be a factor? People have mentioned they think the baby will get a tooth soon. Any info/advice will help. I am feeling exhausted with this new schedule and I feel awful that I am not able to provide what is needed. I was fully intending to nurse for at least 6 months.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded. I truly appreciated everyones advice and encouragement. Nursing is going better now. I don't know that I have found the cause of her pulling off, but it sure helped to know that other moms had experienced this before and worked through it. She still pulls off sometimes, but now it is more due to her being inquisitive of everything going on around her.

My first thought is that your daughter is teething. My son began doing the same thing around 4 months. He would nurse for a minute or so, take a break and fuss and then go back. He is now 5 months old and his teeth still haven't popped through, but I can tell when they are bothering him, he doesn't sleep or nurse as well. The pulling off decreased my milk supply too. Another thing I experienced with my older son is that he became more comfortable with the quick flow of the bottle vs. the breast. Not sure if your daughter uses a bottle at all but my son became frustrated with waiting. With my 5 month old now I only nurse him and he only gets bottles at daycare. Hang in there!

As I 'm sure you know ther could be many reasons...
My first thought is Teething, if her gum are sore it may hurt. You could try one of those small cold teethiers before you start nursing.
I know at about that age my children started to get distracted, even when get starting to nurse. It helped to be in a quiet, less distracting area and even covering with a balanket if they let you.
Another idea is the milk taste different. Could be because as they get older your nutients chnge to keep up, or could be something you are eating. Have you talk to the LC about your diet.

You've made it this long keep doing a great job. You an get through this!

Talk to your lactation consultant about it, but usually when my baby does this it's because she's gassy. I burp her and try again. If she's teething soothing her gums before she eats may help.

I had the same problem with my son. He'd do well for a minute or two then he would pull off and cry, arch his back... he was diagnosed with acid reflux was started on zantac which didn't work well for him... he did well only after starting prevacid. I would definately talk to your dr.

My daughter was about that age when she started having acid reflux. I would check with your doctor to see if there may be signs of reflux.

Good luck!
