Baby May Have Swallowed Some Plastics Shards

Well now, you certainly have varying responses.

My question would be more about what kind of plastic it is? If it's the kind that is easily chewed and you can see teeth marks and it's pretty soft and small, I wouldn't worry. But if it's the kind of plastic that is hard and splinters and could be sharp, then I'd call his ped and see what they want.

I too worry about this with my daycare babies. I worry a lot more about things like watch batteries, pennies, magnets, etc. All kinds of objects do find their way out. But sometimes they get lodged, cause bleeding, and even death. So it's perfectly reasonable to be concerned.

This stuff is so stressful! I worry about things like this obsessively. I would keep an eye on his diaper, of course, and if there is any sign of discomfort or irritability, I would act. Although i know you know this of course. I also always like to call the ped because I cannot tell what is rational or irrational some times when it comes to my kids. I like to act irrationally until someone tells me otherwise ;o
I also think if the plastic was large enough when swallowed that the pain would have started in throat and if it scratched the esophagus then that would cause considerable discomfort too.

I'd be worried. Take him to the hospital!

It should pass right through. But watch for any signs of bleeding just in case.

I think he is probably ok, but I would call your ped and talk with an advice nurse to see what they think. You can never be too careful with your child!

Anything like this I would definitely call the pediatrician. At the very least, they can tell you exactly WHAT to look out for, and if you need to worry at all. It ALWAYS gives me peace of mind to talk to the pedi and let them decide if I need to be concerned. They are the ones with the training and qualifications. Better to be safe and find out if he needs to be checked.

FYI, (just some general advice...) there have been many times that I called the pedi thinking that I was worrying too much and pretty sure they were going to say everything was fine, however, in just A FEW instances, my child actually DID need to be seen or something was of concern, etc...if that makes sense. (For example, one case my toddler had severe nosebleeds and I thought I was worrying too much when I called the nurses line but they said one more nosebleed within a certain number of hours and we needed to head to the ER for too much blood loss) Everything worked out in the long run in each case but having certain information on when to be seen, etc really helps and takes the "guess-work" out of things!~good luck!

I agree you should call your ped and speak with the nurse, just to be on the safe side!
