Baby Is Crying During a Feeding

My baby was breastfed almost exclusively via bottle for 2 months, but now my supply is very low and I'm weaning her onto formula. We've switched from Similac with Iron to Organic, and now sensitive under the advice of our doc b/c she has colic (since 2wks old), and she's very fussy and gassy. She's gotten a little better, but now she eats about an ounce less per feeding and she bats the bottle away and cries during the feeding sometimes. She gets similiac sensitive 5 feeds /day and BM 2 feeds/day. It doesn't matter what I'm feeding her when she does this. I've weaned her onto formula slowly over the last 2 weeks. Any advice? I've tried gripe water, tummy soothers, mylicon, and chamomile tea with limited success. I don't know if she's crying b/c she's gassy or not. She burps well and passes gas no problem.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded, I really appreciate your input. Caitlin is starting to come out of this fussiness I believe. I don't think acid reflux has had anything to do with it, b/c she never spits up. I think it's all gas. We keep her upright as much as we can and baby massage seems to help. We've tried the gas drops, chamomile tea, gripe water and gentle naturals tummy soother. I must admit, the tummy soother seems to help..definately with hiccups anyway. So, she's only getting BM once a day and formula for the rest and she seems to be doing well as long as we let her take her time, and be sure to burp her at least once when she starts to get fussy. Sometimes I think she just needs a little break within the feeding. The last 24-36 hours there has been no crying (and a lot less gas)..so I think that was the problem. As for the BM vs. formula issue, my baby has never been able to latch even with LLL and consultants so pumping was my choice..I feel satisfied that I've given her a good start and now I am done with pumping. We're both happier and she seems to be healthy and thriving so please don't get on a mum who's made a choice to formula feed. Thanks again everyone!

Have you tried soft music, talking or singing to her while feeding....maybe some pleasant distraction will help...

try the Lactose-free formula. i think Enfamil is the only one that makes it, but i could always find it at my grocery store. my youngest son did the same thing and we tried every version of formula-even soy and the Lactose-free was the best. it was immediately better with the first bottle.

A lot of babies, particularly those with colic, can not handle formula. My son was one of them. He cried and fussed constantly when he took formula, so I cut it out entirely when he was around 2 1/2 months old and he was a different kid afterwards. Work on increasing your milk supply rather than giving up breastfeeding. Don't assume that you are not making enough milk. Many moms think they are losing their milk supply around this age, when it is really just that the baby is going through a growth spurt and is demanding more so it feels like there is less. Also, around 2 months, your breasts will feel softer. This is because your body has learned how much milk to make and is no longer overproducing. That engorged hard feeling is not normal after this time. Not only that but if you pump milk, you are not going to be able to pump as much as you actually have. Nursing is more efficient so the baby is getting more than you are pumping. Go to www.kellymom.com for other useful information on breastfeeding. Also buy The Breastfeeding Book.

I'd go back to breastfeeding. Call a lactation consultant for assistance and head to a La Leche League meeting. Very rarely does someone truly have a low supply. Unless your child was losing weight/not gaining anything, you probably don't have a low supply. I re-read and see that you were pumping, so you may need to boost your supply.

When did you start offering formula?

The best way to increase your supply is with the baby, not a pump. You can get a 2 month old back to the breast with a bit of work. You can start with a nipple shield to mimic the bottle nipple and work your way off of it. A BF baby swallows less air, so less gas. None of my babies ever had colic, gas or tummy upset. And that effect lasts for YEARS. My kids have still never had an upset stomach or diarrhea like so many of my friends' children. BFing is worth the work!

Breastmillk is best. But, some babys seem to do OK on formula. It doesn't sound like your baby is one of them. Seeing your baby cry is so difficult.

Hi D., Is she spitting up a lot? A lot of times colic can also mean reflux- ask your dr. My 2 boys both were colic and had acid reflux which sometimes means they will not want to drink b/c it hurts. All I had to do was put them on zantac and the colic eased and they were much happier.

I'm a new mom too, my son is 10 weeks old. He was colicky last month and the Pediatrician suggested Enfamil nutramigen. It worked, I would definitely ask your pediatrician before trying it. Its also quite pricey. You ca call enfamil 800-222-9123 they will send you coupons. You must talk to the pediatrician first. My son is now back on Enfamil Lipil and breastfeeding,

Good luck. Also running water when they cry or white noise sometimes works.

I had a similar problem when supplementing my breastmilk with similac organic. i ended up switching to Nestle Good Start with DHA and ARA and things are so much better! My daughter was swallowing air we think and just didn't respond well to the similac. We also moticed that she was becoming constipated and good stat helped with that too. Just an idea.

My third one similar thing happened. What it was, he was not ready to be on the bottle. It was very difficult. I tried Fenugreek and it helped for the longest time to increased milk supply and then I gradually tried bottle later and it helped. He was upset one night because he wanted the breast and I tried it and hurt alittle because nothing was coming out of it. Try giving her Teething tablets or Teething gel before feeding her and see what she happens. Perhaps it's that. Have you tried giving her pacifier and see if she'll take that and maybe it'll give her some comfort too. Breast is the most soothing thing and when you can't do it for one reason or another, it tends to be difficult for some babies, but what can you do. If you tired the herbal suplement to help with milk supply and eat garlic and peanuts will help with milk supply and drink lots and lots of water too. I'll pray for god's wisdom for you as well. If you have questions or need to tlk send a message through this to me and personalize it if you prefer and I'll try to get back to you ASAP. Okay?

make the hole in the nipple bigger and add baby cereal to the formula. She crys because she is so hungry and it tires her out to eat...thus only one ounce at a time.

Worked for my daughter when she had the same problem. Also try Baby gas drops. They sell them at Wal-mart. Put a few drops in her bottle. That's what our Ped. told us to do and it worked.

Your baby probaly misses the delicious taste of your breast milk. I believe he crys b/c he's angry and doesn't like new taste of formula. You've taken away his favorite yummy milk. It might take time to get used to. Can you mx your breast milk with the formula?
Try giving him your breast milk in bottle again. If he doesnt' cry when taking breast milk, it's b/c he's not liking formula. Good luck. M

I don't mean to sound so definite, but I am surprised that your pediatrician has not suggested to you that she may have acid reflux. My daughter has it and so did both my neices. You probably need to take her to a pediatric GI specialist because that is EXACTLY what it sounds like. My daughter now takes Pepcid and also takes the Similac sensitive. Some babies have it so bad that they are on medication and Alimentum or Nutramigen, which are hypoallergenic formulas. I will tell you from experience that once you get it properly diagnosed and treated - it makes A WORLD of difference. I went from a very unhappy baby to the happiest. ALso - they will only be on the medication for about six months as they grow out of the condition - so it is not forever. They do not diagnose babies with colic anymore - it is usually acid reflux or GERDS. I encourage you to get some specialized help. Good Luck.

I wonder if it could be gastric reflux, which is painful when eating. My daughter had that, severe pain, and it's a thing of the past because she's on prevacid. Zantac did not work. Ask your doctor ASAP, because it's so painful.

Hi, First off after reading the other responses, I have a few suggestions... Sensitive is Lactose Free, so that is not the answer. If the doc feels that a true formula switch is in order you might want to try Alimentum. It smells better and tastes better than Nutramigen and doesn't stain clothes as much. My niece did really well on it after trying everything else. She slowly weened back to regular Similac after her colic ended, about 5 months. I think the issue is probably the way you might be feeding. Try a different bottle or nipple, the baby might be geting too much air in the bottle and that can be painful. Also feed less and burp more, free up gas. Try and keep her propped up as much as possible when you are feeding her as well. If the baby is pooping well, the formula is prob ok. For all the Breastfeeding concerns, talk to your ped as well, he or she should help. Hope these help!!

My child had to have formula when at 4 months I went back to work and couldn't pump enough. I continued to BF when w/ him though. I had to switch to Alimentum formula. It was the only one that did not make him ill as you describe w/ your little one. It has broken down proteins which most formulas DO NOT and I don't know many babies who can truly tolerate formulas. It was more expensive but it did not upset my baby for the reasons noted.

Have you tried a different kind of bottle like Dr. Brown's maybe? What about increasing your milk supply? Would you breastfeed longer if you could? If so, I have a friend who might be able to help you. She was able to build up her milk supply to nurse her daughter she adopted!!

Hugs,

When my girls were little,3 1/2 yrs apart, they are done with college now, but they both had colic. Was pulling my hair out with the screaming. The doctor said soy formula, it really lessened the problem, It took awhile, but they grew out of it and the soy seemed to help. I really feel for you, thought I was going deaf, lol. I was a colicky baby but I was only breast fed. I was breast feeding with the first but never had enuf when she was hungry, the pump didn't help, and all day log my breasts were leaking till feeding time. It's just a matter of finding something that agrees with her. With my first, she was ravenous all the time and at 11 weeks the ped said to add cereal in her soy. Take a lot of prozac, j/k lmao

hi! i recently read and article about organic formulas in the paper. it was very interesting. it said that organic formulas were the only ones putting natural sugar in. (for taste) that it was unneccesary and possibly fattening and of course difficult to switch to other formulas since infants prefer the taste. also, just read an online article that too much iron is bad for infants. if they are already getting enough then too much can delay them.....isn't all this stuff just too confusing for words??????? anyhow, you didn't ask about that. i am sorry gripe isn't working for you - it worked well for us but i think some of this can't be avoided with the formulas. our dr has always been nice about giving advice and samples...

I don't know much, as my son is almost 3 months, but I have heard that a baby who cries during feedings may have an ear infection. Does she also cry when you lay her down? My son started becoming fussy, esp during feedings (he had previously been rather calm) and I did some research that seemed to point to ear infections. I took him to the pediatrician, but she said his ears were fine. I now think it was a reaction or side effect from one of the immunizations he had at his 2 month checkup the week before. The symptoms continued for about 8 days, and now he's back to his old self. HTH
