I agree with pp about the website & super baby food book. I just wanted to add another resource that I love in addition to these and that is Annabel Karamel's book "First Meals". We still use a lot of the recipes that are for older children. (My oldest is 8 and we got that book when I first started making food for her) They are really yummy AND nutritious. Good luck and have fun.

So funny that I just saw this post because we JUST got home from getting this great baby food steamer/processor at Williams Sonoma. It does it all in one machine and then you can freeze the food in treys until you want to use it. There's a great cook book with it too.

I just called my friend that recommend it to me because I never would have imagined getting this excited about making baby food! It is a whole new wonderful world with a baby. lol Good luck!

"Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron. My kids are grown but this is one book I don't loan out because I still use it so much.

wholesomebabyfood.com is the best! It'll get you started and teach you how to make all your basic purees. I used that web site until my baby was old enough to eat "normal" foods and then transitioned her to things like spaghetti, chicken and vegetables and pretty much everything we eat! :)

ditto on the wholesomebabyfood.com and Super Baby Food book. That's all I used as references. Great guidelines, ideas, and plans. Good luck! It's very fun and rewarding to know exactly what's going into your baby's belly:)

www.wholesomebabyfood.com
I used that site SO OFTEN when my daughter was eating baby food. It is a wonderful site with lots of information on the different foods you can introduce, when to introduce them, recipes for mixing different foods, how to make them, etc. It's great!
I also have the "Super Baby Food" book mentioned by another poster, and it's also helpful, but once I found the website I didn't use the book.
You don't need any fancy or special tools to make the food; a blender will do the trick, as well as having a steamer basket. I did buy some special containers to freeze food in (Jumbo Baby Cubes from www.onestepahead.com) They are BPA free and really easy to use since the lids don't come off of them!
I made all of my daughter's food, and she's still a great eater at 18 months. I loved making her baby food!

I made most of my daughter's baby food. Just experiment with different vegetables to see which your baby will eat, then make a large-ish batch and freeze like the other moms have said below. I didn't use any special equipment, just my steamer pan, food processor or blender, and an ice-cube tray. When pureeing the vegetables, you will likely find that you need something to thin it out. You can use formula or breast milk for this; I've read that this makes a new food taste a little more "familiar" to the baby. Some of the vegetables that have a high water content may need a thickener -- whatever kind of cereal your baby eats will work.

My daughter loved carrots and yellow squash, and she tolerated broccoli and zucchini. Green beans need to have all the stringy parts removed, or you get a weird, hairy, green paste (at least I did!). I even pureed boiled chicken breasts (lots of liquid to thin), and she loved it.

Fresh vegetables are best nutrition-wise, just steam until VERY tender. Frozen vegetables are good, and canned should be the last choice. If you must use canned, be sure to look for products with no salt or sugar added. And if you make meat, look for organic with no additives (broth, etc.), and boil in plain water with no seasonings.

Have fun cooking for your baby!

Making baby food is so stinking easy imo. You just cook the veggies, slice the fruit or whatever and then puree in a blender, food processor, food mill or mush with a fork. You can make a lot of it in advance and then freeze it in ice cube trays. Pop them out and put them in a freezer baggie. It's great because you can control what kind of foods they get, what's in it, etc. Many pre-made baby foods are loaded with salt, preservatives and other stuff you may not want your kiddo to eat. It's also very economical to make your own baby food.

I liked the book Super Baby Foods. The woman who wrote it is very thorough (and a bit wacky imo) and has a listing for just about every food and when and how to introduce it. It even has recipes for making your own baby cereals which my son loved and tolerated way better than the boxed kind. I know there are some other web sites out there. Maybe someone will recommend one to you.

Good luck & enjoy!

All you need is a small food processor, fresh fruit and vegetables, and an ice cube tray or 2. You can get a small food processor at Walmart. My girlfriend got one at Walmart for $30 and it came with storage containers you can use on the food processor and seal and store! Take the skin off of the fruit or vegetable and dice it up. Put it in the food processor and puree it. Once it's pureed you can scoop some into each individual ice cube portion of the ice tray and freeze. This way you have future food! All you have to do is take out the fruit or vegetable cubes as you desire and let them thaw. This also works for breast milk! When you leave the house instead of worrying about the milk staying cool enough to spoil it's frozen and will thaw out in time for use. The cube will fit in the baby bottle without having to break it up! Pretty cool huh? Good luck with it, and this way, your child doesn't have to be influenced by processed foods, and you don't have to worry what's really in your baby's food!

My daughter and I made babyfood for her daughter and it was aS SMOOTH AS THE FIRST BABY FOOD YOU START THEM OUT WITH. APPLESAUCE WE PEELED AND CORED . And boiled the apples in apple juice. when they were very tender we took a wire mesh tea strainer like for loose leaf tea and just smushed the apples through it. it was mega smooth. You can do the same with all fruits and veggies. put it in ice cube trays or if you buy some baby food save the plastic containers it comes in and use them or jars even. you can freeze them and thraw wen needed. WORKS GREAT. W.

I blended a portion of the big people food from our dinner to feed the babies. BUT, I hadn't yet put in any of the spices so as not to upset tummies. Add formula to meats and some vegies and add juice to fruits. Water is ok, but I always liked to get some extra nutrition in. Must have worked-my first -the preemie- has grown to 6'8" and 320 lbs. Proof is in the pudding.

First meals is a book & good resource. Try freshly mashed bananas and avocado-sounds gross but it is surprisingly good and baby loves it!
