I live in a 3 bedroom house in TT1. I have tried several gates for my stairs, but have not found 1 that fits. I want a gate that is pressure mounted & opens easily. The opening is 42". Does anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I think I have found a gate that fits. I have to order it, but with the extension I think it will work. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have the Safety 1st Perfect Fit gate that I got through the military for free while stationed in Okinawa. I'm not sure if they do this stateside, but if not I just looked at Walmart online and it's on clearance for $18. I have it in a 33" doorway with well over a foot more of adjustment. It is pressure or can be wall mounted. It's not super easy to move in my doorway because it gets stuck to the paint on the trim, but I just step over it anyway.

I found the most amazing gate at Target 3 years ago. It's made by Safety 1st; it's not pressure mounted, but it is made for stairs and is easy to open. They great thing about it is it's mounted to the wall or banister and fits uneven surfaces easily. And even after 3 years, can still stand up to my very wild, rambunctious boys. I believe it is called the Safety Gate II, and it was $15 at Target. I hope this has been fruitfull for you and good luck!!

You really want a mounted gate for the top. We have presser mounted on our bottom stairs and our little climbers have slammed their bodies against trying to show us that they are able to move it. THey have moved it enough that it fell.

I will look up on Toy r us, what the names are of the gates we use. They are pricy, but worth it. You are talking about your peace of mind and their safety. I still use the one upstairs even though my kids can open it because some times they walk to our room in the night. I do not want them to take a wrong turn and get hurt.

I would not recommend a pressure mounted gate for stairs either top or bottom - You can buy a relatively inexpensive wall mounted gate that opens very easily - try Safety 1st at Target or WalMart but steer clear of pressure mounts as they may give way under adverse circumstances!

I recommend the First Years Hands Free Baby Gate WITH the extension (you need it for the 42" opening you have). It is very strong and EASY with the foot pressure opening! http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2266795

I love The First Years Hands Free Gate. It is pressure mounted and you can buy an extension piece to fit any size doorway. It's a little expensive, the gate is probably around $50-$60 and the extension another $15-$20, but well worth the money. We bought 3 for our house. I think 1 gate and 1 extension would fit your stairway of 42". It also has a foot pedal so you can open the gate without using your hands. You should never put a pressure mounted gate at the top of the stairs for safety reasons. However, we did...I checked it regularly to make sure it was tight and secure and never let my kids hang on it or shake it back and forth, it never budged and we never had any problems.

Try looking for a pressure gate at Lowe's. Was very surprised when we found ours there
