Baby Ezcema

My 4 mos old baby is having bad ezcema on his face. We have tried different cream but nothing seems to be able to get rid of it completely. He kept rubbing his face during sleep which made it more red. We tried to put socks/mittens on his hands but didn't help. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Mustela for Dry or Eczema-Prone skin. It has a body wash and a body lotion. They are a bit costly about $12.50 each and can be found at baby boutiques.

My 6 months old son has bad eczema around 2 months and nothing was helping until I bought this, his skin cleared up in about a week.

My son had the same problem - face, wrists, elbows. I still swear by the eucarin cream at night (really thick and white). As he got older it got better, but the biggest problem was that during the day the aquaphor or prescription stuff would come off. Another mom clued me in to TheraSeal. It is a cream (lightweight and non-greasy) that can be put over other creams. It is not prescription, but it is sold behind the counter at the pharmacy department. Good luck!!!

Hey H.,
I have a daughter who is now 9 years old that had really bad eczema at a young age. I explained the issue to my pediatrician and they recommended putting my daughter on a cream called Triamcinalone 1%. It is a steroid so you really don't need to use it on a daily basis. Once it would flare up really bad they switched it from the cream to the ointment (which I find works alot better). I am not sure if your doctor will recommend this because your little one is so young, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Also, I know it is a little early, but pay special attention to your little one's breathing. It was discovered some time after the eczema spells that I discovered my daugther had asthma, and you will find eczema common in asthmatic children. Hope this helps

Arbonne's Baby Care line works wonders for ezcema. I have before and after pics of a little one who used the line as well as a free sample if you'd like to try it.
My daughter has extremely sensitive skin and this is the only line I use on her.

If you are breastfeeding, spray face with milk. Sounds a little out there,,,but works. This suggestion was given to me by my midwife.

Please be sure to check your child for a dairy allergy. Eczema is very common in children with dairy allergies. I went through this with my son and as soon as we eliminated dairy, the rashes cleared up.

The biggest challenge is truly eliminating dairy. It's in just about everything: baked goods (butter), deli meats (cured in lactic acid), prepackaged food, etc. So you may think you have eliminated dairy, but you really have to read labels.

I hope this helps some of you! It is disappointing to discover an allergy, but it's also a relief to know that you can help your child feel better.

Hi H.,

I don't know if you have tried this yet but Baby Aquaphor works really good on any type of rash. When my 8 yr old was a few months old she had baby acne really bad, I used it on her and it helped alot. Now I have been using it on my 11 month old when her skin gets dry or irritated because she is teething. Hope this helps.

Melaleuca (all natural) products are GREAT!!! for excema. Their RENEW lotion is the BEST you can find for any dry skin condition. I am just a customer now, but I used to sell it. Look for a rep or email me and I can refer you to my friend! I live in Roseville too! You won't regret it! M.

That is about the same time my son developed eczema. His ENTIRE body broke out w it. The only thing that helped was a prescription steroid. I've tried so many different over the counter creams, etc. I gave up. I guess it's different with everyone. I felt like I needed the stronger prescription steroids to get it under control, then I would try my best to just keep the skin moisturized. Right now, my favorite is Cetaphil cream (not lotion). I also found out later that he was allergic to dairy. Once we got him on a dairy free diet, his eczema improved about 50%. And just like the previous poster, my son developed asthma around age 2, once the eczema started disappearing. He still has it, but it's not nearly as bad as when he was a baby. There wasn't much I could do, and sleep was a MAJOR issue. I'm sure it was because he was uncomfortable. Sometimes in the morning, it looked like there was a huge fight in his bed, bc there would be blood smears all over the sheets. I hope his eczema improves soon.

I would double check with the Dr to make sure it is ezcema and not psoriasis, which has differnt types of treatments for it.

My daughter has psoriasis on her face, because of how close it is to her eye we cant use many treatments, but we have been able to use some. As far as OTC, I have found the California Baby products to be the best bet. They are more expensive but they work wonders on sensitive skin. All the baby boutiques in the Sac area carries them, as well as Whole Foods. Target carries some items but not their rich creams. I find their Calendula Cream works the best.

I do not like baby aquaphor because its main ingredient is mineral oil. Considering no matter what you will have to be doing multiple times a day application of anything you use, I want to use something safer for my baby. I think it works well for a quick rash or a diaper rash, but not long term use.

Hi H.,

The only thing that has cleared up our 1 year olds eczema has been Renew lotion and Gold Bar bath soap. They're both made by Melaleuca. Definitely e-mail me if you want more info on them. They have been a lifesaver for Logan's poor skin!

HI. My two youngest children had this problem & what worked was soaking baths on affected areas in oatmeal, non perfumed soaps like cydaphil( not exactly sure about spelling)& liquid vitamin e so if open skin occurs so it wouldn't scar.

Our baby did not have extreme eczema, however we found that eucerin (the ointment, not the lotion), was extremely effective in calming his skin down and reducing the itching. we discovered that he had a shellfish and nut allergy.
