My 4 month old drools a lot, too. Her neck usually gets red from being wet all the time (despite my best efforts at keeping it dry). We use Desitin Clear. It seems to work pretty good.

Dear K.,
I know this sounds terribly old fashioned, but my son who is 20 yr. old now did the same thing and I ended up using Carmex right around his mouth. It was the only thing that would stop the dryness that was constantly around his mouth. Sometimes it would cause a rash down around his neck and I even found that it was safe to use around his neck. Only a very, very thin layer is needed. That is what I used I don't know how others feel about it. It was the only help I had and it worked miracles for me. His little face was totally chapped in the winter and even in the summer he was almost raw from the slobbering. Hope this helps.

You can either rub vaseline on her skin lightly or what works GREAT is Aquafor. It works for so many things, rashes, dry skin, etc and it is safe for baby....

Hey K., I am a pharmacist but have my own business with Arbonne. I would not put Vaseline on your baby's mouth. It is a petroleum product (derived from crude oil). Most people don't know that Vaseline and "Baby Oil" and mineral oil are crude oil derivatives. I have a pure, safe and beneficial line of products designed for babies called ABC Arbonne Baby Care. The Diaper Creme would be good to dab around your daughter's mouth. I recommend my ABC products and also recommend my Intelligence Conditioning Oil. It has grape seed oil and I use it at night on my lips. No chapping. Let me know if you'd like more advice. You can contact me at ____@____.com or call me at ###-###-####. Sincerely, T. Bennett

My little boy used to do that at around the same age. He had more problems with excema on his back and buttocks. Try some EUcerin cream. It is very thick and it is a great moisturizer. Hope this helps

Babies have very acidic saliva while their teething (body's natural defense with open spaces in the gums) Eucerin can be bought in a tub from drug stores and it will work overnight. Doctors usually recommend it for exzcema, but I've used it for diaper rash, hives, etc... this stuff feels like crisco, and you want to make sure the skin is dry before you apply it, that's when it works best. good luck!

butt paste! I know it sounds weird but it does a lot for chapped lips and chapped skin.

Gerber makes a moisture stick that is a little easier to use than a cream like aquaphore, that is a little messy. you can also avoid using soap on her face at bath time, that can make the chapping worse.

Our daughter would get a rash around her mouth and chin area when she was little like yours is. I think you'll find (as did we) thath the only thing a pediatrician, pa, or ped. nurse will tell you is o.k. to apply to a young child like that is a thin layer of vaseline, which you can reapply fairly regularly. It works on their sensitive skin, although the results appear to be slow-coming, as the drooling is on -going. Don't look for or expect overnight massive improvement. Just know that it is gradually working, and that the irritation for her will be well-soothed so that it isn't so painful as it probably is right now. Also, when you blot/wipe that area up from slobber, try using Pampers Sensitive Baby Wipes, rather than a dry cloth or kleenex tissue.

aquafor, a & d ointment, chap stick or just good ol' vaseline are the best for healing dry chapped skin.

Mine has done that too. I solved it by putting chap stick on her mouth right before bed and during the day too...; many times during the day. It doens't hurt them and it cleared up almost over night.

vaseline. It puts a barrier between the drool and the skin. My daughter had a similar problem.

Hi K.,
Sounds like your daughter is teething. Just wipe away the drool with a soft cloth, wet with lukewarm water and pat it dry. Then gently massage a mild lotion (like maybe Aquaphor) on her chin and around her mouth area where she is developing the drool rash.
Good luck and happy teething!

Use Bag Balm!! It's a lanolin-based type of ointment. It was originally used for cows! lol You put it on their utters when milking and it gets rid of the chaffing. However, I've used it for everything!!! I used it with my kids when they drooled, and I also used it for diaper rash. They even make little cans of it perfect for your purse or diaper bag. It's a miracle ointment! You can get it at Kroger, Walgreens and even the coop and TSC.

I used the palmers coco butter that is in a jar, not the squirt bottle. It seemed to help a real lot! I would put it on him at night or before nap and he seemed to wake up pretty healed in the morning.

Hi K.,
I totally agree with the Aquaphor. You can get it in a package with a couple of little tubes at Target (then you can have one at home and one in your purse). It has worked beautifully for my kids.
Good luck!

I have an Oxyfresh business and we have an excellent non toxic product that would help. It's a skin barrier and helps with all kinds of things, including the prevention of diaper rash, poison ivy, poison oak, etc. Our products are non toxic, alcohol free, environmentally friendly, and there is always a money back guarantee. It's safe for all the family, including kids and pets. I will work with any mamasource member to introduce you our products and to your first purchase at my cost. my 3 month old is a serious drooler as well with the same red chin. My pediatrics office said to just use aquaphor unless the skin broke and then she might suggest some kind of medecine ointment? i hope the aquphor works b/c my son would rub his lil hands against his chin and get it in his mouth.

I used Lansinoh Breast Cream since it's safe if they ingest it, unlike Vaseline, which is a petroleum product. I know it's a little pricey, but you don't have to use very much and it works beautifully! It's with the feeding stuff in Walmart, and Target, and I think they may even have it at Walgreen's.

In one word, Vaseline! Just put a thin coat wherever the drool goes and it will keep her from getting raw. BTW I have a 3 year old grandson who was 3 months premature and he's also doing great. He's a little small for his age but he's a long way from 1 lb 10 ounces!
God bless you and your preemie!

I just got done dealing with this with my two year old son. The problem with him was that the drool was getting trapped between his pacie and his mouth/chin. It was making red, chapped areas on his chin that were showing up in pictures. (A Mama's nightmare!)Anyway, I talked to the pediatrician about it, and he said to use Aquaphor lotion. That, combined with limitied time with the pacie, cleared it up in a week or two. Good luck!!!

Try a little bit of pure baby vaseline around her mouth. She is to young to lick it off and if a little gets in her mouth it won't hurt her. Vaseline is really one of these fix all products.

Aquaphor-it is amazing! My husband is a Navy Corpsman, and he was a Dermatology Technician when we met; he introduced me to this stuff. I fell in love with this stuff (after falling in love with him, of course LOL).
We lived in Iceland from the time our four year old was 3 months old until she was two. The wind there is CRAZY, and she was addicted to her pacifier. Her mouth was the same-red and raw around it where the pasi was, and nothing-even the prescription stuff helped-EXCEPT Aquaphor. Of course while we were stationed there we had to order it through drugstore.com. You can get it at CVS, Wal-Mart, and who knows where else now. There is also a generic of it a CVS now, but I don't like it as well. It is also great fot just about anything else. I like it for chapped lips, eczema spots on my 4-year-old, itchy skin, minor burns, it is great for millions of things! Of course, always ckeck with a Dr. before using anything that you are not sure abut of have never used before (I have been a Medical Assistant for almost 14 years). Also she had terrible diaper rash that literally bled when we wiped her when we brought her home from the NICU, she was 4 weeks early and even the prescription stuff didnt work, aquaphor healed it right up. AND that is what gave her some relief from the pain she was feeling from the diaper rash. I dont think it is medicated, but I am not sure. The same people that make Eucerin make Aquaphor. It is kinda like a water-based vaseline, it is not really that greasy. Hope this helps!

Eucerin cream is the best ever. It isn't white and it really does help with all sorts of things. It is expensive but totally worth it.
Wouldn't worry about drool though. She is just getting new teeth and that is part of it. Don't be surprised if she runs a fever too when getting new teeth. Doc said it was a wives tale, but both my girls ran fevers (low grade but none the less), had runny noses and drooled like crazy. Good times let me tell you! I pre packaged outfits and bibs in zip locks and took them with us everywhere (3 at a time). Then I had something to put wet stuff in when I took it off of them.
Good luck
