Baby Constipation - Sun Prairie,WI

Hi, my son is almost 7 months now and ever since he started eating baby food, he's been really constipated. All he eats is vegetables so getting him to eat prunes is a challenge. I've tried giving him water but that doesn't seem to help either. Are there any secrets out there that will help him poop?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello ladies and thanks for all the great advice! I've decided to try a probiotic and am wondering if there is any special I need to know about them. Is there a certain brand that you prefer? How many live cultures should be in them? Thanks again, Sheena

Try mixing about 1 tablespoon of dark corn syrup (only use dark) into his water. This worked for my babies, hope this helps!

My son had this problem as well. I started a probiotic supplement (JARO powder form -but needs to be kept in fridge.) I give him 1/4 tsp in his first bottle of the day and it hasn't been a problem since! This is much more gentle him than other methods.
Good luck!

Hey, I have family who live in Sun Prairie! I'm in MN.

OK, so it seems as though we need to address the cause of the constipation which is typically an imbalance in gut flora and diet. I would try giving him a probiotic first. Go to your local health food store and buy a refrigerated probiotic capsule. Just open it up and put it in his dinner. Don't be surprised if he starts to have a lot of poop after a few days. This is something he should be on every day, and so should the rest of your family for that matter.

I'm a nurse and I work with families on diet and illness management. I see this a lot, you're not the only one. I'd be happy to talk to you about this further if you'd like. The veggies shouldn't constipate him, though rice cereal will. Sweet potatoes offer good fiber. Can you mix the prunes into another veggie that he likes to mask it a bit? Oatmeal is another good fiber. Take some regular oats (not quick cook or steel cut) and put them in the blender to make a fine powder. Mix it at about a 1:3 ratio with water and whisk over heat for 10 minutes. You can add water or formula/breastmilk to get it at a good consistency. Bicycling the legs during diaper changes also helps!

Pear juice worked wonderfully for my sons occasional constipation. I am not sure if you are willing to feed him any food besides baby food but I would tear up double fiber bread and gave that to my son also and that helped a bunch too.

We had an easily conspipated baby too. We had to do lots of gas (mylicon) drops and also added prune juice and extra water to her bottles. That really helped the most. I think the juice is easier when mixed in rather than doing it by itself or feeding prunes.

As an encouragement, she outgrew this level of constipation by about 1.5, then she has done well ever since. Hopefully your baby will outgrow it too!

Hi, my son is 7 months also and has had a change in poop, but not constipated. More fruits and veggies obviously, if he gets hungry enough he will eat it. My son seems to like the fruit blends better mixed with a little cereal. Try different ones. Also a friend gave her girls prune juice mixed with formula and then milk. Called it a shake, tastes good and loosens things up. Hope that helps. A.

My son is almost 5 months and battles the same thing. I give him 1oz of prune juice with 1-2oz of water either every day or every other day. The only food he is eating is milk and oatmeal cereal and that seems to help him.

I see you've had plenty of responses. My daughter had this prob from the cereal more than anything so when we did cereal we mixed the pureed prunes in (maybe a 1/4 of small Gerber tupperware daily seemed to do it.) Also we added small amounts of juice (pear/prune/apple) to her diet which seemed to help also. Good luck!

I don't know if you'd be willing to let your baby start eating little snacks or not, but my little girl gets very constipated from milk...when she was a little younger than your baby we started letting her have cheerios, one or two at a time, she loved it and was never constipated again until she got more regular milk in her diet. She would eat the cheerios until she was full or ust didn't want any more and she was happy, had a tummy full of fairly simple good fibre. Just have to watch that hey don't try to put alot in their mouths and choke. I usually fed them to her our gave them to her to feed herself a couple at a time. Now I give her 1 leveled off teaspoon (the cuttleryware kind not the baking kind, not sure what the difference is in actual measurement) of benefibre in her first drink of the morning and that seems to help alot.

If the cheerios thing is too soon for you to feel comfortable with it, try a little watered down prune juice as a drink once every day, my girl loved that as well, and I have also heard that a little bit of corn syrup in the bottle of milk helps too.

We have had the same problem repeatedly with our 11 month old. Prune juice or pear juice works well. He loves the pear juice and we have also mixed it into his cereal to get him to ingest it. Best of luck.

My kids didn't go poop on their own when they were born, and they gave them something to make them go every couple of days while they were in the hospital. A week after they came home from the hospital we took them to our regular doctor, and he told us to give them a small bottle of apple juice a day. We started doing that, and within a week they were going poop daily. They couldn't skip drinking it for a day till they were two, but as long as they had a little bit every day everything was fine.

My daughter did the same thing! My doc suggested mixing juice and water and giving it once or twice a day and it help, a lot! Try 2 oz. of apple or prune juice and mix it with 2 oz. of water. Make sure it is the 100% juice so there is some nutrition. Hope this helps!

I'll add one more vote for probiotics - I used them for my baby from the time he started solids, and they helped so much! I found an infant powder at my local natural foods co-op, but I have also just broken open an adult capsule & mixed the powder into his food. I believe you want to look for one that contains many strains of bacteria, maybe 8-10? I have seen single-strain capsules at the regular grocery store, but I don't think you would see as much benefit from that. Good luck!

Cook apples or pears in the oven. That should help. Otherwise I used a tiny tiny tube, (I forget the name but you can find it at a drug store)...you put it a little inside the anus, using some lubricant or vaseline and move in a circular motion. This should relieve him of any gas and stimulate a number 2.

get a box of milled flax seed and sprinkle a little on his food. start with just a sprinkle, and if that doesnt work try a little more. theres a fine line between softening his stool this way, and causing diarhea LOL. fiber absorbs water to keep stool soft, so be sure to get liquid WATER into him between meals.

This happened to our son (now 15months) when he was about that age and started eating more solids. Things recommended to us from the Dr. were: try 2 oz of pear or prune juice. Or, try having him eat pears or prunes. Also, try the Glycerin suppositories laxative for infants and children. You gently push one up into their little rectum and they generally poop in 10 to 30 minutes. We only had to do that twice. Read the directions on the bottle. To maintain/prevent constipation we added pear juice into his rice cereal regularly and to other baby food and made sure it wasn't too thick. As a word of warning, be aware constipation can reoccur even in older children because almost everyone lacks enough fiber in their diets. Even when we were trying hard to feed our 6 year old healthy foods, she got chronically constipated and we didn't know it until the Dr. told us soiling of the underware in an already potty trained kid is a sign that the colon is blocked and only small amounts of poop can leak out around the blockage. We felt terrible when we found out what was wrong with our 6 year old. I felt like I should have known...well now we do and I'm trying to tell other parents. In some children a high amount of dairy in their diet can be constipating--but that's probably not the case with your 7 month old son, since most babies don't eat dairy until after their 1st birthday. Good Luck. --Amy

I've found that avocados have really helped my kids when they're constipated....probably because they are high in fat...but the good fats. They are also full of nutrients. Here's some good info on avocados. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/avocadobabyfoodrecipes.html
