I have an 11 month old baby girl.. About once a month she gets a red rash all over the corner of her top lip. I get cold sores in my mouth when i eat to much acidic foods.. Do you think that is what is on her lip? She has had one every month since she was born.. it goes away within a week but i was just wondering if any one else has experienced this or have any suggestions as to preventing it..Thanks

What can I do next?

Hey K.!

I'm not sure if your daughter has a cold sore or not, since it's a reaction . . . I used to get cold sores mainly from stress.

About a year ago I started ordering my non-perishable groceries (shampoo, laundry detergent, lotions, soaps, etc)from this really neat online company/store based out of Idaho calld Melaleuca the Wellness Company (www.melaleuca.com).
A lot of their stuff contains tea tree oil (melaleuca oil)
and one of the products "melaleuca oil" I've used on my daughter since she was 6 months for almost everything.
I use it everytime I feel a cold sore coming on (just apply to the area) and haven't got one in a year! yeah!
When Sonora, my 20 month old, get cuts, bug bites, what-have-you, I put the oil on . . .it's like a cure-all, and I don't have to worry about my baby being too young for it since it is all natural.

I'm sorry if that was long, but I think this could help your daughter get rid of the rash once it arrives!

Hi K.:

I am a mom for almost 20 years. I've been married 23 years. My daughter & I would get cold sores, really more mouth ulcers. My husband's grandmother told me to make a pitcher of lemonade and put some cream of tartar in the lemonade or Koolaid and mix it up well. She said it was for mouth sores, ulcers, and would help reduce and heal these sores. Your daughter gets them on the outside, so I'm not too sure how that rememdy would respond. I know it helped with my mouth ulcers. I work in the medical industry and there are many topical ointments for cold sores, etc. I would check with your pharmacist and see what he would recommend you using for children who are the same age as yours. Let me know how everything turns out.

Hi K.-

Have you thought they might not be cold sores? That is a common place to get a little growth of yeast. Try to notice if it happens after eating certain things- it may be a contact irritation (dermatitis) to a particular food. My son does that with a certain kind of pancake syrup, but the allergy doctor says it's not a true allergy.

I get canker sores in my mouth when I eat too many acidic foods- pickles, pickled beets, orange juice, etc, but have never had cold sores on the outside of my mouth from these foods.

Good luck!

I have a niece who has extremely sensitive skin to anything acidic and she used to get red rashes on her botom, cheeks and around her mouth. She is almost 4 now and has grown out of it for the most part. I would consult your pediatrician and ask if there is any type of ointment you could use for this...and cut back on the juice a little.
