Baby Bowel Movement

I have a 6 week old little girl, I am strictly breastfeeding her. She gets about 7 feeding in a 24 hour period, sometimes 8. In the last 2 weeks on two different occasions she has not produced a bowel movement for 24 hours. She makes it up the next day with huge explosive poops. She produces plenty of urine on a daily basis. How many Mom's have experienced this with their newborn, I don't remember going through this with my older daughter.

What can I do next?

totally normal, don't worry. Some breastfeeding babies goes as long as a week before pooping. As long as she is peeing you are doing fine.

Yes this has happended to me too. A girlfriend of mine baby didn't go for 7 days and her doctor said not to worry and call if he didn't go within 12 days.

Emily,
I am a new mom of a now 5 week old so I have been doing alot of reading. According to my readings and my duala (SP?) after the first month it is totally normal for a child to go many days without a bm. As long as you are getting enough pee filled diapers they are still getting enough to eat. My duala's personnal experience is that her daughter went about 15 days without a BM and she was very healthy.
Good luck with the diapers!

My DS is 10 weeks old. I went through the same thing with sooo many poop explosions. The best one was when I was nursing him in the back of my Rav4 and it shot out the side of his diaper across the car, splattering me and the car. My doctor said that his pooping was normal. Thankfully, though he still only poops once a day, it's not explosive. I got so tired of constantly doing the laundry!

Her bowel movement pattern is totally normal for a breastfed baby. My first baby would wait several days before pooping and I was assured that that was normal. He was not constipated since the poop was the usual kind of breastfed baby yellow runny stuff and he did not strain to pass it.

Congratulations on your newborn!
