Babies First Stuffy Nose

hey moms, i need sme good advice on what to do for my five month old baby boy's first stuffy nose. He has had the sniff's since we returned from a road trip to Texas about two weeks ago. I thought it was just from the traveling and it would go away. It has not been bad untill this morning. I purchased a humidifier this week and we have been sleeping with it in our room. I also purchased the sniff homeopathic med. from Sprout's ( the little tablets that dissolve under the tongue) His drip's are not green so I know it is not an infection. The lady at sprouts said it could be food allergies????? is it because it is from all the dust storm's we have been having??? The suction they gave me from the hospital is not getting the drip's out very well either. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks J.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

ok ladies, thank you so much for all the responses. I know that i shouldn't mess around with a baby so I took him to the urgent care this mornig after a VERY long night. The doc said exactly what all you very smart mom said, "it is probably from him cutting teeth." He also said that he doesn't have an infection and that it should run it's course. I did go out this morning and buy the vicks vapor rub and the saline drops with the suction thing. (the one from the hospital just didn't seem to be working.) Anyways, i hope i can get some sleep tonight. We moved the swing in our room and he slept in that because it is upright. He still woke up though i am glad he did because he had a fever and i had to give him motrin. I hope the teeth come soon because i don't know how long i can watch my little guy cry because he is uncomfortable. :( thanks again J.

My daughter had a runny nose for two months with clear discharge and the day that her top teeth broke through it stopped. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. Especially if you haven't given him nuts, milk, meat or other things that may lead you to think it is allergy related.
I did take my daughter in, and they said not to worry about it unless the runny nose is accompanied by a high fever (some of that is normal with teething too), a rash or diarrhea.

Hi J. Im N.. Im also a nurse. I never sweat the little things with my kids but 2 weeks is a bit to long for a little guy. The sniffles maybe related to something else. He may just need a little more help than store bought remidies. I would take him back to the pediatrition. You just never can be to sure with the babies.

it sounds like you are doing all the right things and i'm happy to hear you went the homeopathic route. there is no fever or other symptoms? is there a certain food he is craving a lot lately? maybe try taking it away and see if that has any link. it very well could be from all the dust lately, though. if you think it could be traditional allergies, it is a good idea to take any stuffed animals he might have in his room out. they are just dust and allergy collectors (even though they are cute!) a very simple and clean sleeping environment is best. maybe even put in an air purifier. i also remember that there was another suction that we bought that had a softer and wider "spout" that fit in the nostrils better and had better "suck"! if i remember the brand, i'll let you know. good luck!

Hi J., I have three children so I have been threw this many times... I have found with my 1 yr. if his nose is running or stuffy I use saline and then use the nose sucker (as I call it) put saline in one side at a time and plug the one side of the nose with your finger (that has no saline in it) you know just press your finger up against the one side and then suck out the other side ( that you put saline in) that way your not just sucking and getting air from the other side .. try it, it really works good luck

Saline nose drops and the suction thing is very good to use for that age of children.

You know it could be that he is teething. When my daughter started teething, even before you could see the teeth through the gums, she would get a runny nose during the day and then stuffy at night. All of my girls had a runny/stuffy nose, mild temp.,and lots of drool during teething. Also I noticed they were biting more on anything. I used johnson and johnsons baby vapor rub for the nose and tylonol for fever. If you are really conserned you should call your pedeatrition for advice. I hope this helps.

My baby got a stuffy nose from the church nursery. I bought him saline nasal spray for kids that was all natural, no additives or anything. He didn't like it much, but it did help a lot. I found I didn't need a bulb sucker thing with those either. Just watch for an ear infection. My sons congestion moved into his ears and he got a slight ear infection, even though I breastfeed exclusively.

J.,
He is probably teething, if it is not green, don't worry about it.
