I know, I know, this is my 1,000th post...but you all are just so great I thought I'd ask another silly question.

I know it's a little personal but I'm needing to know (for budgets sake) what the average cost (before insurance covers anything) of a vaginal delivery is at St. Luke's East in LS. I will be induced and will have an epidural. Barring any complications, I plan on just being there the normal 2 days, etc. We have great insurance (90% coverage) but I'm just needing to know what I can guesstimate on spending there. With Emme, I delivered at St. Mary's and at the time we received financial assistance. Also, how long do they give you to pay off your balance? Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

At SMMC the cost of v**. w/out complications is 3500 I think. You can call the billing department where you are delivering and ask them. It seems like everyone's billing is different. Also just ask them about the amount of time to pay off the balance. Most hospitals will work with anyone that is willing to pay their bills. Hope this helps.

Generally speaking, most hospital billing departments are very organized and willing to talk this over with you. They are also very familiar with the insurance issues too. I did this before my almost 4 year was born at Menorah. Also, when we toured the hospital the woman went thru alot of our insurance coverage and charges with us then.
Congrats on the pending arrival!

I didnt deliver at St Lukes, but just had a baby on Jan 15 at Olathe Medical. My EOB and bills came recently, so here are the exact numbers. I, too, was induced with an epidural. For my portion of the hospital stay it was 10,208.05. For my son's portion it was 2,279.15. My anesthesiologist as 1,500. There was also a lab charge (not sure what for) of 163.00. I have no idea if these are all the bills are not, but it what I've received so far :D So it looks like the grand total was 14150.20 Good luck. I hope your labor is easier than mine!

I delivered at St. Lukes on the Plaza and our delivery cost was about 11,000. I had an epidural and as well. I stayed for 2 days at the hospital. It is absolutely AMAZING how much our insurance has paid! I think out of the 11,000, we only paid about $700.

Hope that helps!

You can call the ASU at ###-###-####. One of the girls can tell you approxiamtely (sp?) how much it would cost. Then you can call your insurance and they will tell you what your coverage is for maternity. Also just an fyi you will have 90 days after the hospital receives the insurance pymt to have your portion paid. Also they do offer an extended pymt plan or even assistance if you cannot pay the bill. I work in the billing office for St. Lukes Health System so if you need any other help let me know.

I had my first child at St. Luke's South back in October. I'm not sure what my total bill was, but wanted to respond regarding payments. These are the bills I ended up with (approx.) after delivery & my insurance is a 90/10 split also.
Hospital - $350
Anesthesia/Epidural - $325
Pediatrician/Circumcision - $350
Hearing Test - $150
I was able to call all 3 places and have them put me on a payment plan...each was broken down to 4 payments. Just call on them - as long as you can pay something, they seem willing to work with you.

Not only should you be able to get a formal quotation from the hospital but you can shop hospitals as well - if there are others your insurance covers. You may be able to save money at another hospital or talk one down by using the other's quote. They may only be willing to give you the cash price though - make sure you get them to clarify.

If you have insurance you will have to pay insurance, not the hospital. The time frame in which to do so will depend on your insurance, and they will usually work with you to accommodate your needs. Don't be afraid to ask.

Medical billing departments are accustomed to long delays, so they're pretty lax on their terms. They understand that even if they bill you, you're going to submit it to your insurance and have to wait for that processing to get back to them. It's just part of the process.

Good luck and congrats on your soon-coming arrival!
