Autism - Beeville, TX

I am wondering how to get my son diagnosed. His school conselour said last year he has some traits of autism. I asked her if there was any thing the school could do, she refered me a clinic which did not help. I asked our famiy doctor to find someone to help, but they have done nothing either. He is a great student, he made all A's this year until the last six weeks. His teacher, babysitter, and daycare have told me he is getting very fustrated and angry with them, his sister and other children. I do not know what to do. I know he neeeds help, but I need to know where to turn.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you everyone for your advice. Julie gave the number of their doctor in San Antonio that specializes in Autism. I called yesterday, they are going to send me a packet to fill out and for his teachers to fill out, then set an appointment to get him diagonsed. I have tried since he was three to find out what was wrong with him, but everyone just over looked him saying it was phase or he would grow out of it. Hopefully, we will be able to get him the help he needs.

A child psychologist should be able to help you.

Local resources depend on where you live, but check

You might want to consult a Neurologist. They are usually the ones who can steer you in the right direction. They have a team of specialists who test for these kinds of disorders. There are many kinds and degrees of Austism. I wish you and your son the best.

G.,
I am not sure what autism is, but your public school is obligated to help you. I had behavior problems with my son that is 5 and the teachers are who told me about special programs/ classrooms within the school system that can help. Also call the free phone number of 211. It is just like 411. Just dial 211 from your home phone and ask for centers or schools that deal with children and special needs. That should get you started and good luck!!

The school should test him if they suspect he has a problem. They are required by federal guidelines to test & offer the specialized services he needs. I recommend that you put your request in writing because at that point they have 30 days to respond. If he is autistic he could possibly qualify for year round schooling. I work for EduCare, an agency that provides services for individuals with mental & physical disabilities. The people you need to contact are Bexar MRA. They may be listed under AACOG (Alamo Area Council of Governments), the number is ###-###-####. They can help you with a determination of a diagnosis and also let you know of any programs available to help you with his situation.
